Dealroom reported on 2 October 2026 that Certo Aerospace had raised £5 million to advance its Capstone heavy-lift uncrewed aircraft from flight trials toward an engineering baseline for repeat production. The report does not name investors or deal terms, and the available sources do not include a direct confirmation from Certo or its investors. Capstone has completed several substantial demonstrations, but there is no evidence here that it has entered repeat production or operational service.
What the reported £5 million is for
According to Dealroom’s 2 October 2026 report, the £5 million is intended to support Capstone development as it moves from flight trials toward an engineering baseline suitable for repeat production. Dealroom characterises the financing as early venture capital. It does not identify the investors, describe the financing structure or disclose terms.
The production framing matters: the reported aim is to progress beyond a development aircraft, not evidence that manufacturing has begun. The available sources give no production start date, output capacity, unit cost or signed commercial order. Nor do they establish that Certo has directly confirmed the financing.
What Capstone is—and what its performance figures mean
Capstone is a large coaxial vertical take-off and landing uncrewed aircraft system, or VTOL UAS. A coaxial rotor arrangement uses two rotors on the same axis; VTOL means the aircraft can take off and land vertically. Certo says the aircraft has been flying since 2023. BAE Systems describes it as a heavy-lift platform with modular open architecture.

Published figures differ by source and configuration, so they should not be combined into a single guaranteed payload-and-range specification.

The figures describe different published claims and examples, not a complete performance envelope. The sources do not provide enough common test conditions to reconcile them or calculate how payload, weather, route, reserve fuel and mission equipment affect a particular flight.

What the demonstrations show
Logistics and CASEVAC under Project MORRIGHAN
In an announcement dated 6 January 2026, Certo said the Ministry of Defence had awarded it a contract to demonstrate uncrewed logistics and CASEVAC capabilities. CASEVAC means casualty evacuation. Certo said the Phase 2 demonstrations took place at Keevil Airfield in December 2025 and included pickup, transit and drop-off using three carriage approaches: Skylift TEUCAN/SkyHook, an Aether Aerospace winch system and Blackspace Technology’s Rapid-ACE carriage system.
The company also reported autonomous take-off, climb, waypoint navigation, descent and precision landing. These tasks show work on both flight autonomy and the handling of mission payloads; they do not by themselves establish routine operational use in the field.

Anti-submarine warfare technology demonstration
Certo said Capstone demonstrated anti-submarine-warfare-related capabilities for the Royal Navy at Keevil Airfield on 23 February 2026. According to the company, the aircraft carried a representative mix of sonobuoys for more than two hours. Sonobuoys are deployable sensors used to collect underwater acoustic data.
The demonstration also integrated General Dynamics Mission Systems’ UYS-506 acoustic processor and routed processed sonobuoy data through ground-control systems. Certo said QinetiQ supplied sonobuoy data through its sonobuoy data creator, and that the demonstration included transatlantic command and control and data transmission using Starlink satellite communications. This was a technology demonstration, not evidence that Capstone has been deployed for Royal Navy missions.

How the defence programme milestones fit
BAE Systems says its FalconWorks unit is working with Certo to develop Capstone to operate alongside crewed helicopters. BAE also says the joint offering was down-selected by the UK Ministry of Defence for Project NYX, a British Army programme for next-generation autonomous systems intended to operate alongside Apache attack helicopters.
BAE gives 2030 as the target for initial operational capability for the wider NYX programme. That is a programme target, not a guaranteed Capstone delivery date, procurement award or indication that the aircraft is already in service. A down-selection is a programme milestone; it should not be read as proof of a production order.

What moving toward production still involves
Flight trials and mission demonstrations establish that an aircraft can perform particular tasks under particular conditions. Repeat production requires a further step: turning a development platform into a consistent product that can be built and supported reliably. Dealroom’s report frames the £5 million as support for establishing an engineering baseline for that transition, but does not publish a production timetable or technical acceptance criteria.
- Configuration control: defining the aircraft, software, payload interfaces and approved variations so that successive units are built to a controlled baseline.
- Repeatable integration: showing that mission systems such as cargo winches, carriage equipment and acoustic processors can be installed and operated reliably across aircraft, rather than only in a particular demonstration setup.
- Supply and support: establishing dependable component sourcing, maintenance, training and other support arrangements. The sources do not give details of Certo’s supply chain or production capacity.
- Customer and programme commitments: converting interest, trials or programme selection into defined orders and requirements. The available sources establish no signed commercial orders.
These are the practical questions raised by a move toward repeat production; the available material does not show how far Certo has progressed on each one.
Where Certo says it wants to use the aircraft
Certo identifies logistics, construction, firefighting, CASEVAC, maritime services and defence as intended roles, and says it expects construction to be its first commercial use. These are company-stated ambitions, not confirmed deployments or evidence of customer demand. The demonstrations described above are evidence of development activity, not proof of commercial service.
Certo also publishes comparisons with crewed helicopters claiming reductions in fuel consumption and cost, launch-and-recovery personnel, and maintenance hours. The company page does not make the methodology visible in the supplied material, so those percentages cannot be treated as independently validated performance results.
What is known—and what is not
The public picture is of a heavy-lift VTOL aircraft with years of flight activity, demonstrations spanning logistics and anti-submarine-warfare technology, and a reported funding round intended to help establish a production-ready engineering baseline. The evidence does not establish investor identities or terms, direct company confirmation of the reported raise, a production start, manufacturing capacity, signed commercial orders or a fielded operational aircraft.
