Hindustan Times reported the approval on 1 October 2026, quoting Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari. The announcement describes a 6.91-km project, including approaches, intended to provide an alternative to the existing Coronation Bridge.
What has been approved
According to Hindustan Times’ report of 1 October 2026, the Central government sanctioned ₹1,175.59 crore for a 6.91-km, six-lane major bridge and its approaches across the Teesta at Sevoke. The report attributes the announcement to Gadkari, who wrote on X: “In West Bengal, we have approved ₹1,175.59 crore for the construction of a 6.91-km-long, 6-lane major bridge with approaches across the River Teesta at Sevoke on NH-10 (Old NH-31) in Darjeeling district”.
This is a reported sanction, not evidence that the full amount has been spent or that construction has begun. The current primary approval order was not located in the material reviewed, so the amount and project description should be read as reported by Hindustan Times and attributed to Gadkari’s statement.
Where the bridge is planned and what route it serves
The proposed crossing is at Sevoke in Darjeeling district, on the corridor identified in the current report as NH-10 (old NH-31). Hindustan Times says the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) manages the project. The report describes the bridge as an alternative major crossing, not a replacement for the existing Coronation Bridge.

Route numbering is not consistent across the available records. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ 2024–25 annual plan lists a proposed additional major bridge on NH-17 (old NH-31), between km 591/0 and 603/0. That entry shows earlier official planning for a Teesta bridge on the corridor; it does not establish the current sanction, final design, project cost or procurement status. The available information does not reconcile the different NH labels, so they should be understood as the route designations used by each source.
Why an alternative to Coronation Bridge is proposed
Hindustan Times reports that vehicles travelling between Siliguri and Sikkim via NH-717A, and between Siliguri and the Northeast via NH-10, use Coronation Bridge. The report describes the existing route as long, vulnerable to landslides and accidents, and prone to traffic snarls. Those are reported conditions, not quantified comparisons or findings from an independent impact study.

The stated aim is to provide another crossing and support connectivity between the Siliguri corridor, Sikkim and the Northeast. Hindustan Times also reports that the project is expected to reduce the Sevoke–Ellenbari travelling distance by around 10 km. That is an anticipated route-distance change cited by the news report, not a measured travel-time saving or a demonstrated outcome.
What is known about the earlier proposal
Hindustan Times says an earlier ₹844 crore sanction and tender were cancelled. The MoRTH annual-plan entry supports the narrower point that an additional Teesta bridge had appeared in official planning, but it does not confirm the reported tender cancellation or explain how that earlier proposal relates to the newly reported approval. The earlier tender history therefore remains attributable to the news report rather than independently established by the available official document.

What has not been established
The reviewed material does not establish a construction start date, contractor, current tender status, completion schedule, quantified traffic forecast or independent assessment of the bridge’s effect on congestion and travel. Those details should not be inferred from the sanction announcement. Confirmation would require a current official release or MoRTH/NHAI procurement or project document.
