A centralized exchange (CEX) holds assets in an account it manages and intermediates trades. A decentralized exchange (DEX) can let you swap crypto directly from a self-custody wallet using smart contracts. The core trade-off is who controls the funds: with a CEX, you rely on the platform; with self-custody, you control the keys and take responsibility for access and transaction choices. Neither model is risk-free, and the cheaper option depends on the specific trade.
How a centralized exchange differs from a decentralized exchange
Coinbase Help describes the custody distinction this way: on an exchange, a platform manages funds on your behalf; in a self-custody wallet, you hold the private keys and have direct control over the assets (Coinbase Help: Exchanges and self-custody wallets).

That distinction shapes the trading experience. A CEX provides an account and acts as an intermediary for trades. A DEX can connect a self-custody wallet to smart contracts that carry out swaps. Uniswap Labs defines a DEX as a peer-to-peer platform enabled by smart contracts that lets users trade directly from their own wallets (Uniswap Labs, February 21, 2025).
| What to compare | Centralized exchange (CEX) | Decentralized exchange (DEX) |
|---|---|---|
| Custody | The platform manages assets held in your exchange account. | You can retain assets in a self-custody wallet and sign transactions yourself. |
| Trade execution | A centralized intermediary handles trades; order books are common in this comparison. | Smart contracts execute swaps. Uniswap is an example of an automated market maker (AMM) that trades against liquidity pools. |
| Costs | Fees depend on the particular platform and trade; there is no universal CEX fee schedule. | Network gas applies to onchain use, and an interface may charge a separate service fee. Execution price and slippage can also affect the result. |
| Asset access | The platform selects which assets it makes available to trade. | Some interfaces expose a broader range of tokens, but availability does not mean a token has been vetted. |
| Who handles access and recovery? | You depend on the platform’s account systems, custody, and withdrawal terms. | You manage wallet access and transaction authorization; losing access can mean losing control of the assets. |
These are broad patterns, not rules for every venue. Check how the particular service executes trades, which chain and assets it supports, and what its terms say.

What a DEX swap involves
In the Uniswap model, a swap is an onchain transaction routed through smart contracts and liquidity pools rather than a conventional order-book trade (Uniswap Support: How does the Uniswap protocol work?). The wallet signs the transaction, and the network processes it. You need a compatible self-custody wallet for this flow; a hardware wallet is optional, not a prerequisite.
Before confirming, review the wallet prompt and transaction details. The exact steps and labels vary by interface, but make sure you understand the token pair, amount, network, quoted result, any fees, and the slippage setting. Confirming a transaction authorizes an onchain action; it is not the same as placing an order that a platform can simply cancel.

Which exchange is cheaper?
There is no universal winner based on the available fee information. A CEX and a DEX may show costs differently, and the total depends on the venue, network, asset pair, trade size, and current liquidity. Compare the full cost and expected execution result for the actual trade—not just a headline trading-fee figure.
- Explicit fees: Check the platform’s trading fee or any DEX interface service fee.
- Network gas: An onchain swap requires gas, generally paid in the network’s native currency.
- Quoted price and liquidity: Thin liquidity or a large order relative to available liquidity can worsen the execution price.
- Slippage: Review the tolerance shown in the transaction flow and understand what price movement it permits.
- Moving assets: Include any costs of transferring funds to the venue or withdrawing them afterward.
For example, Coinbase’s DEX trading help page says its described flow may include both a standard Coinbase fee and a separate DEX service fee; it also describes an estimated price based on current liquidity and a displayed slippage tolerance. Those details apply to that product, not to every DEX (Coinbase Help: DEX trading – Introduction). Fees and availability can vary by product and region, so use the live preview for your specific trade.

Custody and risk: what you take on
With a CEX, you rely on the provider
The platform manages assets held in the exchange account, so you must trust its custody, account operation, and withdrawal terms. The availability and conditions of withdrawals matter; an exchange account is not the same as holding the private keys yourself. Risks can differ between products offered by the same provider, so do not assume that information about one service describes every exchange activity.
With a DEX, you take responsibility for the wallet and transaction
Self-custody gives you control of the keys, but also makes wallet access and signing your responsibility. DEX trades can still be affected by smart-contract issues, network conditions, execution, or an incorrect transaction choice. Keeping control of a wallet does not guarantee that a swap will succeed or that access can be recovered if keys are lost.

Token availability is not a safety check
A DEX interface may make more tokens accessible than a CEX lists, but an available token has not thereby passed a platform’s listing review. Coinbase warns that assets reached through its described DEX product have not passed Coinbase’s asset-listing process. Verify the token and network independently before trading.

- Decide who should control the assets. If you prefer a platform to manage the account, examine its custody and withdrawal terms. If you want direct control, be prepared to manage wallet keys and transaction signing.
- Check that the venue supports the exact asset and network. A token with a familiar name may exist on more than one chain; verify the specific asset and network before sending funds or approving a swap.
- Compare the expected execution, not only the fee label. Review the quoted price, liquidity, gas, service or trading fees, and slippage information for the trade size you intend.
- Consider what can go wrong and who can address it. With a CEX, review account support and withdrawal conditions. With a DEX, make sure you can protect wallet access and understand the transaction you are authorizing.
Choose the specific venue and wallet you can use safely—not merely the category name. A CEX may suit someone who wants a managed account and a particular supported asset; a DEX may suit someone who wants to transact from a wallet and accepts the added responsibility. The right answer can change with the chain, token, trade size, and live quote.
