Neither centralized exchanges nor on-chain perpetual venues are categorically safer. A centralized exchange usually concentrates custody and trading operations in a company; an on-chain venue can give users more direct control of wallet keys and more publicly inspectable activity, but adds responsibility for key security and exposure to smart contracts and blockchain infrastructure. Both carry leverage, funding, liquidity, execution and liquidation risks. The practical choice depends on the specific venue’s mechanics, safeguards and your ability to manage its failure modes.
What changes when a perpetual trade moves on-chain?
The main difference is not whether risk exists, but where it sits. A centralized exchange (CEX) typically handles trading through accounts and exchange-operated systems. An on-chain perpetual venue may have a trader connect a self-custodial wallet and interact with contracts or other blockchain-based components. The details vary: “on-chain” does not mean every part of order matching, pricing or settlement is necessarily on a public blockchain.
That changes the dependencies around a position. With a CEX, a customer depends on the operator’s systems, asset controls, records and withdrawal arrangements. With self-custody, the trader may retain control of wallet keys, but also takes on the consequences of securing them and interacting with the correct software and network. Neither arrangement removes market or leverage risk.
| Risk area | Centralized exchange | On-chain perpetual venue |
|---|---|---|
| Custody | Often depends on the exchange or its custodians holding assets and processing withdrawals; the exact arrangement varies. | May let users keep assets in self-custodial wallets or use contract-based collateral; control and recovery depend on the specific design. |
| Trading operations | Execution, margining and liquidation are generally operated by the exchange. | May involve smart contracts, blockchain transactions, or a mix of on-chain and off-chain components. |
| What users can inspect | Some activity and records may be internal to the operator. | Some actions and fund flows may be publicly verifiable, but visibility does not establish that every component is on-chain or safe. |
| Additional operational exposure | Operator, custodian, account-access, system and withdrawal failures. | Wallet and key loss, software vulnerabilities, oracle or chain problems, and transaction or network constraints. |
| Risks shared by both | Leverage, funding changes, insufficient liquidity, slippage, execution problems and liquidation under adverse market conditions. | |
These are typical structural tendencies, not guarantees about every product. A particular CEX may use external custodians; a particular on-chain venue may rely on centralized services. Read the venue’s disclosures and technical documentation rather than treating its category label as a complete description.

How does custody affect loss and recovery?
On a centralized exchange
When assets are held by an exchange or a custodian it selects, customers depend on that arrangement remaining operational and on the relevant records, withdrawal processes and legal treatment. A service outage can restrict access even if the customer’s trading view still shows a balance. If an operator or custodian becomes insolvent, the outcome depends on the custody structure, applicable law and jurisdiction; a displayed account balance alone does not establish how assets will be treated.
FINMA’s 12 January 2026 crypto-custody guidance discusses the infrastructure challenges of holding assets such as Bitcoin and Ether, as well as legal complexity that can arise when custody is overseas. It says customer assets should not form part of a custodian’s bankruptcy estate, while also recognizing that cross-border arrangements can complicate the legal picture. This is Swiss supervisory guidance, not a universal guarantee of recovery or a general rule for derivatives in every jurisdiction.

With self-custody
Self-custody shifts key control toward the user; it does not make the assets invulnerable. A lost or compromised private key can mean permanent loss, and a mistaken or malicious transaction may be difficult or impossible to reverse. Wallet security also cannot prevent a leveraged position from being liquidated or protect collateral from a vulnerable contract, disrupted blockchain or adverse market move.
A comment submitted to a CFTC regulatory docket describes one on-chain implementation as using publicly auditable blockchain records for actions such as orders and liquidations, with collateral held through self-custody rather than an exchange omnibus account. The same submission highlights user responsibility for wallet security and the possibility of protocol-software or underlying blockchain vulnerabilities. It is an interested submission, not a CFTC finding, and its description should not be generalized to every on-chain venue.

What funding does—and does not—tell you
A perpetual swap has no maturity date. Unlike a dated futures contract, it has no fixed expiry at which convergence with the spot price is guaranteed. Perpetual venues instead use periodic funding transfers between long and short holders to encourage the contract price to track spot. The rate can change, and a trader may pay funding rather than receive it. The mechanics and timing depend on the venue.
For that reason, a positive funding rate or a gap between venues is not a guaranteed yield. An apparent funding-arbitrage trade is a cross-venue basis trade: its outcome also depends on whether the hedge tracks as expected, whether both legs execute and remain open, and whether costs or disruptions erase the spread.

A 2026 paper by Edson Pindza in Digital Finance identifies funding-spread compression, imperfect hedging across venues, execution frictions, forced liquidation, and settlement or smart-contract disruption as ways such a strategy can fail. Its inputs include Binance Futures funding observations for BTC, ETH and SOL from January 2021 through December 2024, synthetic DEX funding scenarios designed to isolate particular effects, and a robustness exercise using observed dYdX v4 funding data over an overlapping window. The synthetic scenarios are not observations across all DEXs, and the paper cautions that results are assumption-sensitive rather than frictionless arbitrage profits.

- Custody and recovery: Who controls the keys and collateral? If the operator, custodian, protocol or blockchain fails, what process—if any—exists to recover assets or close positions?
- Execution and observability: Where are orders matched and settled? Which records can you independently inspect? Public transaction data may not reveal off-chain components or guarantee fair execution.
- Liquidity and costs: Check order-book or pool depth, spread, expected slippage, trading fees and network costs. Consider whether you could close the position during volatility, not only when markets are calm.
- Funding: Find how the rate is calculated, when it is fixed or paid, and which prices or market inputs affect it. Check whether the displayed rate is historical, current or projected.
- Margin and liquidation: Identify the trigger, the price reference used, how quickly liquidation can occur and whether losses beyond posted collateral are possible. Read how the venue handles a deficit or market gap.
- Technical dependencies: Map the contracts, price oracles, bridges, wallets, validators and blockchain availability the product relies on. Ask what happens to open positions if a dependency is delayed or unavailable.
- Legal and operational safeguards: Check jurisdiction and access restrictions, disclosures, custody terms, any reserve or insurance arrangements, and rules for default or loss allocation. Do not assume a mechanism exists because another venue offers it.
What do regulations establish—and what do they not?
Regulatory descriptions must be kept within their stated scope. A 2026 Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission high-level framework concerns perpetual contracts offered by SFC-licensed virtual-asset trading platforms. The available description addresses disclosures, liquidation triggers and settlement prices, loss allocation, and reserve or insurance-fund arrangements. It describes a jurisdiction- and license-specific framework, not a global rule and not an automatic requirement for permissionless protocols.
FINMA’s January 2026 material concerns crypto-asset custody, including infrastructure and cross-border insolvency considerations. It supports a custody discussion, not a claim that FINMA has established one derivatives rule for CEXs and on-chain perpetual venues generally. In either case, a regulatory framework does not by itself establish that a particular platform is solvent, liquid or immune to technical failure.
How to decide which risk profile fits you
Start with the failure mode you are least able to absorb. If you are uncomfortable relying on an operator for custody, account access and withdrawals, examine whether a venue genuinely permits self-custody and whether you can securely manage its wallet and transaction process. If managing keys and blockchain transactions is outside your capabilities, self-custody may replace one set of dependencies with risks you are less prepared to handle.
Then assess the position itself: leverage, liquidation thresholds, funding exposure and the ability to exit under stress. A technically transparent venue can still have weak liquidity or contract risk; a familiar account-based interface can still depend on the operator’s custody and systems. No market-wide, directly comparable statistic establishes that one category is safer overall. Compare the actual venue mechanisms and your ability to respond to their failures, rather than relying on the label.
