Start with your phone’s built-in call-recording feature: on a supported iPhone, use More > Call Recording during a one-to-one call; on supported Android phones, use the Google Phone app’s Record control or, on Pixel, Call Assist > Call Recording. Availability depends on your phone, software, carrier, and location. Check the feature and the consent rules that apply before recording.
Check whether your phone supports call recording
Built-in controls are available on some iPhones and Android phones, but they are not universal. Before relying on them, check the phone app on your device and confirm support for your model, operating-system version, carrier, and country or region. Menu labels can also vary by software version.

Apple documents call recording for supported iPhones. Google says its Phone app supports recording only on certain devices and carriers in supported regions. Motorola also notes that support varies by device, carrier, and country.

Google’s Android requirements and availability details are on its Phone app call-recording help page. Apple’s current iPhone call-recording guide lists regions where the feature is unavailable. That list includes Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Egypt, the European Union, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen; verify Apple’s current guidance because availability can change.

Record a call on iPhone
- Place or answer a one-to-one call in the Phone app on a supported iPhone in a region where recording is available.
- While the call is active, tap More, then Call Recording.
- Both participants hear an audio notice when recording begins.
- Tap the stop control to end recording, or end the call. The recording is saved automatically in Notes, in the Call Recordings folder.
Apple describes the recording and storage steps in its iPhone guide. Transcripts are available only in select regions and languages and may take time to appear. Apple cautions that they may not perfectly represent the conversation; check a transcript before relying on it. Deleting the audio recording also deletes its transcript.
Record a call with the Google Phone app on Android
Google’s listed minimums are Android 9 or later for non-Pixel devices, and Pixel 6 or later with Android 14 or later for Pixel. Both paths require the latest version of the Phone app and support in the user’s region; device and carrier support also matter.

On a supported non-Pixel phone
- Make or answer a call in the Google Phone app.
- After the other person has answered, tap Record on the ongoing-call screen.
- Tap Stop recording to finish.
On a supported Pixel
- Make or answer a call in the Google Phone app.
- During the call, tap Call Assist, then Call Recording.
- Use Call Assist and Stop to end recording.
Google says participants are notified when recording starts and stops. A call cannot be recorded before it is answered, while it is on hold, or during a conference call. The Google Phone app can also automatically record calls from unknown numbers or selected contacts on eligible devices and in eligible markets; automatic recording and deletion are not available everywhere. Open the Phone app’s call history to play or share a recording. Google says recordings remain on the device and are not backed up off-device. Deleting the associated call log also deletes its recording.

Record a call on a supported Motorola phone
On an eligible Motorola device, use the recording controls on the call screen to start and stop. Motorola says recording cannot start while the call is muted, on hold, or in a conference. A voice announces that recording is underway, and Motorola says this announcement cannot be turned off. Check the instructions for your model and region on Motorola’s call-recording support page.

Recording laws depend on jurisdiction and circumstances, including where the people on the call are located. Google warns that some laws require everyone on the call to consent, and Motorola tells users to know their country’s laws. Check the rules that apply to all participants, especially for calls across state or national borders.

A phone’s announcement is a product feature, not proof that a recording complies with the law. Apple and Google describe audible notices, but those notices do not determine whether a specific call may legally be recorded.
