The Celestron SkyMaster 15×70 is best suited to astronomy and distant, stationary viewing—ideally with a sturdy tripod. Its 15× magnification and 70 mm objectives can deliver bright views, but a hands-on review found handheld views shaky and noted visible color fringing around bright objects. The box includes a tripod adapter, not a tripod, so factor mounting support into your setup.
What the SkyMaster 15×70 is—and what it is not
Celestron identifies this Porro-prism model as item 71009. It is the standard 15×70 SkyMaster, not the SkyMaster 15–35×70 zoom or a SkyMaster Pro or Pro ED model. Similar names do not guarantee the same specifications or accessories.

The model’s appeal is its combination of 15× magnification and 70 mm objective lenses. That makes it a plausible entry-level option for looking at the Moon, star clusters, and other large or bright sky targets, as well as distant scenery. It is less compelling when you need a light, easy-to-steady binocular or want to follow fast-moving subjects.
Specifications and what they mean in use
| Specification | Celestron listing | Practical significance |
|---|---|---|
| Magnification | 15× | Brings distant targets closer, but magnifies hand movement too. |
| Objective diameter | 70 mm (2.75 in) | The front lenses gather light; the large objectives contribute to the binocular’s size and weight. |
| Angular field of view | 4.4° | A relatively narrow view makes locating and tracking moving targets harder. |
| Linear field of view | 231 ft at 1,000 yd (77 m at 1,000 m) | Shows how much ground is visible at the stated distance. |
| Exit pupil | 4.7 mm | The diameter of the light beam leaving each eyepiece. |
| Eye relief | 18 mm | Relevant to viewing comfort, including for people who observe with glasses. |
| Close focus | 43 ft (13 m) | Not intended for close-up subjects. |
| Weight | 48 oz (1,361 g) | Heavy enough that extended handheld viewing may be tiring and unsteady. |
| Optical construction | BaK-4 prism glass; multi-coated optics | Manufacturer-listed construction details, not a guarantee of a particular viewing experience. |

How it performs for astronomy
In Kimberley Lane’s hands-on review for Live Science, published March 10, 2025, the binoculars produced bright, sharp lunar views, and the reviewer enjoyed spotting star clusters, galaxies, and nebulae. The same review reported visible chromatic aberration—color fringing around bright objects—and a stiff focus wheel. These are that reviewer’s observations, not a guarantee that every unit or observer will have the same experience.
The reviewer also reported seeing Uranus and Neptune during a planetary parade, while cautioning readers not to expect detailed planetary views. At 15×, binoculars can help locate or observe planets as points of light, but this model should not be mistaken for a telescope intended to reveal planetary surface detail.

Stability: plan on mounting it for long sessions
At 15×, even modest hand movement is conspicuous. The Live Science reviewer found handheld views shaky and said a sturdy tripod was needed for steady, extended sky viewing. The binocular comes with a tripod adapter, but Celestron’s included-items list does not include a tripod.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen choosing support, check that the tripod can safely carry the binoculars and that its head can point high enough for astronomy. The adapter makes mounting possible; it does not make a lightweight or poorly suited tripod stable. For a brief look, handheld use may be workable for some people, but it is not the most comfortable way to observe for a long time.

Is it suitable for wildlife and daytime viewing?
The 4.4° field and high magnification make this a poor match for following birds or other fast-moving wildlife: subjects can be difficult to acquire and keep in view. The reviewer likewise found it less practical for wildlife watching than for stationary targets. For distant scenery viewed from a tripod, it is a more plausible daytime tool.
Weather protection also needs careful interpretation. Celestron labels the binoculars water resistant and says they are not nitrogen filled. The reviewer described the model as not fogproof and reported fogging after moving it between cold and warm environments. Water resistance is not the same as waterproofing, and neither the maker’s label nor the review supports treating this binocular as immune to moisture or internal fogging.

- PREMIUM ED OBJECTIVE LENSES: Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass virtually eliminates chromatic aberration or color fringing, a visual defect common in binoculars. You'll enjoy razor-sharp images with outstanding, true-to-life color.
- POWERFUL 15X MAGNIFICATION: With these giant astronomy binoculars, you get massive 70mm objective lenses and powerful 15x magnification. It's the most popular combination for viewing objects in the night sky and distant land-based targets.
- XLT LENS COATINGS: All air-to-glass surfaces are multi-coated with Celestron’s proprietary XLT coatings – the same ones we use on our observatory-class telescopes. XLT maximizes light transmission through the optical path for brighter images.
- THREADED TO ACCEPT ASTRONOMICAL EYEPIECE FILTERS: Add an 1.25" astronomical eyepice filter to each eyepiece to experience game-changing views.
- DURABLE, WATERPROOF BODY: A rubber-armored, polycarbonate housing protects your binoculars from damage and stands up to the toughest weather conditions. They're also fully waterproof and nitrogen purged to prevent internal fogging of the lenses.
What comes in the box
Celestron lists a tripod adapter, objective lens caps, rainguard, neck strap, lens cloth, and instruction manual as included. The lens cloth means a separate cleaning kit is optional rather than essential. The manufacturer describes the model as water resistant and not nitrogen filled, and currently lists a limited lifetime warranty; check Celestron’s current terms for the coverage that applies to your location and purchase.

- Consider it if you want a relatively affordable large-aperture binocular for casual astronomy, especially lunar viewing and scanning broad sky targets, and you can provide stable tripod support.
- Look elsewhere if you prioritize low weight, easy handheld viewing, tracking birds or other moving subjects, or stronger correction of color fringing. The reviewer suggests that people seeking more capable long-term astronomy equipment may prefer a higher-tier instrument or a telescope.
- Compare exact models if considering another SkyMaster: Celestron’s line includes 12×60, 25×70, 20×80, and zoom variants, but their specifications and included accessories differ.
Important solar safety warning
Never look directly at the Sun through these binoculars, and never use them to project the Sun’s image onto a surface. Celestron warns that direct viewing can cause permanent, irreversible eye damage and that projection can create internal heat capable of damaging the optic and attached accessories. Follow the full warning on the Celestron product page.
