The Celestron NexStar Evolution 8 is an 8-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope on a computerized single-fork mount. Its standout conveniences are built-in Wi-Fi, an integrated rechargeable battery, manual clutches, and both app and hand-control operation. Celestron lists a 2032 mm focal length and f/10 optics; its published specifications describe what the telescope is, but do not establish how it performs in independent testing.
What the NexStar Evolution 8 includes
Celestron’s standard Evolution 8 package combines the optical tube, computerized mount, and tripod. The kit includes:

| Specification | Celestron listing |
|---|---|
| Optical design | Schmidt-Cassegrain |
| Aperture | 203.2 mm (8 inches) |
| Focal length | 2032 mm |
| Focal ratio | f/10 |
| Lowest useful magnification | 29x |
| Highest useful magnification | 480x |
| Total kit weight | 40.5 lb (18.37 kg) |
The 480x figure is Celestron’s stated upper useful-magnification specification, not a practical recommendation for every night. Actual observing depends on conditions and the target. Celestron also lists StarBright XLT coatings and Fastar compatibility. Those features describe the product configuration; the specifications alone do not demonstrate image quality or astrophotography results.

Mount, alignment, and control
The Evolution 8 uses a computerized single-fork mount with Wi-Fi, brass worm gears, four auxiliary ports, and manual release clutches. The clutches allow manual movement of the telescope, while the computerized system supports a range of alignment methods.
Celestron lists SkyAlign, one- and two-star alignment, Auto Two-Star, Solar System Align, Quick-Align, Last Alignment, and equatorial alignment when the telescope is used with an equatorial wedge. The package includes a NexStar+ hand control; app use is optional rather than a requirement.

- ADVANCED TECH MEETS ICONIC DESIGN: The NexStar 8SE pairs Celestron’s legendary orange tube with a fully computerized GoTo system—ideal for those ready to step up from manual scopes and explore more of the night sky with precision and ease.
- 8-INCH SCHMIDT-CASSEGRAIN OPTICS: The large 8" aperture gathers enough light to reveal fine lunar details, cloud bands on Jupiter, and deep-sky objects like galaxies and globular clusters—all in a compact, portable form factor.
- FULLY AUTOMATED GoTo MOUNT WITH NEXSTAR+ HAND CONTROL: Use the NexStar+ hand control to select from a 40,000+ object database. The computerized mount then automatically slews to your target and tracks it—no star charts or manual alignment needed.
- FAST & EASY ALIGNMENT WITH SKYALIGN TECHNOLOGY: SkyAlign gets you observing fast—just center any three bright stars or planets, even if you don’t know their names. The system then calculates your position and aligns the mount in minutes.
- COMPATIBLE WITH CELESTRON ACCESSORIES: Easily upgrade your setup with all our latest accessories to enhance automation, wireless control, or location accuracy as your skills grow.
Phone and tablet control
The built-in Wi-Fi supports control through Celestron’s SkyPortal app. There is also a USB charging port for a smart device. These are manufacturer-described features; the available product information does not independently establish app reliability, setup speed, or tracking accuracy.

Battery life and portability
Celestron rates the integrated rechargeable lithium iron phosphate battery for up to 10 hours of continuous observing. That is a manufacturer rating, not a measured runtime under a specified workload; actual duration will vary with use and conditions. The total kit weight is 40.5 lb (18.37 kg), so the telescope is a substantial setup to carry and assemble compared with a compact travel instrument.

What the specifications do—and do not—tell you
The published details make the Evolution 8’s equipment and nominal optical design clear, but they are not an independent performance review. They do not establish real-world optical quality, tracking precision, vibration behavior, battery duration in use, Wi-Fi behavior, setup time, durability, or results in astrophotography. Treat those as questions to answer from a hands-on test, not conclusions implied by the feature list.
The listing specifies no autoguide port and no periodic error correction. That is relevant if you are planning an imaging setup: check the requirements of your intended capture and guiding workflow rather than assuming the mount provides features that are not listed.

Evolution 8 vs. Evolution 8 HD with StarSense
The standard Evolution 8 and the Evolution 8 HD with StarSense are different configurations, not interchangeable names for the same telescope. The standard model uses Schmidt-Cassegrain optics and includes a red-dot finder. Celestron describes the HD package as using EdgeHD optics and StarSense AutoAlign, with its own configuration details and accessories. Do not assume that the HD model’s optics, automation, package contents, price, or imaging characteristics apply to the standard Evolution 8. [Celestron’s Evolution 8 HD with StarSense listing]
Price and availability
Celestron’s US product listing displayed a price of $2,399 and in-stock status on October 5, 2026, and listed a two-year warranty. Price, stock, warranty terms, and package contents can change; confirm the current listing before ordering. This snapshot applies to the standard Evolution 8, not the separate HD with StarSense package. [Celestron’s standard Evolution 8 listing]
The package already includes two eyepieces, so additional eyepieces are optional and should be chosen for a particular observing goal. A dew shield may be useful in some conditions, but confirm that a specific accessory fits the standard Evolution 8 before buying it.
Safety and manuals
Never look at the Sun through the telescope without a proper solar filter, and do not project a solar image onto a surface: heat can damage the telescope and attached accessories. Celestron’s product page links manuals for the NexStar Evolution, NexStar+ hand control, Schmidt-Cassegrain optics, collimation, and firmware updates. Its firmware note says the Evolution update procedure requires a wired connection; consult the latest manufacturer instructions before updating.
