For most gigabit connections, Cat 5e is enough. Choose Cat 6 for extra headroom or a shorter 10 Gb/s link; choose Cat 6A for a new copper run that must carry 10 Gb/s across a channel up to 100 m. The cable alone cannot increase your network speed: both connected devices and the rest of the link must support the target rate.

These figures are from Fluke Networks’ network engineer guide. The distances describe supported channel lengths in that comparison, not a guarantee for every cable, connector or installation. A channel includes the connected cabling; a permanent installed link and its connectors need to meet the applicable requirements too.

Choose Cat 5e for a standard gigabit connection
For a typical 1 Gb/s home or office link, Cat 5e is generally sufficient when the cable and installation meet specification. Its 100 MHz rating is not a 100 Mb/s speed limit: frequency rating and Ethernet data rate are different measures. Nor does the cable set your internet speed by itself.

Choose Cat 6 when you want headroom or a shorter 10 Gb/s run
Cat 6 supports 1 Gb/s over a 100 m channel and can support 10 Gb/s on shorter links. Fluke’s comparison lists 10GBASE-T to about 35 m, but a particular existing link’s suitability depends on installation conditions and crosstalk. Do not buy Cat 6 expecting a blanket 10 Gb/s guarantee across 100 m.
Choose Cat 6A for a new 10 Gb/s run up to 100 m
If the goal is 10 Gb/s over a long copper channel, Cat 6A is the supported choice in the cited comparison: it specifies 10GBASE-T to 100 m. The network ports at both ends must also support 10 Gb/s, and the installed link must meet the relevant requirements.

Can Cat 5e or Cat 6 run faster than 1 Gb/s?
Sometimes, but treat higher rates as conditional rather than guaranteed category-wide promises. Fluke Networks notes that Cat 5e and Cat 6 may support 2.5 or 5 Gb/s in some qualified installations, and Cat 6 may support 10 Gb/s over shorter links. Existing cabling does not automatically qualify: crosstalk, including interference from adjacent cables, and other link conditions matter. See Fluke’s 10GBASE-T field testing requirements.

A higher category rating provides greater specified cabling performance headroom; it does not upgrade the router, switch, computer or internet plan. End-to-end speed is limited by the capabilities of the devices and connections in the path. The cable and connecting hardware must meet the relevant standard, and the installation must preserve their performance.

Category comparisons are based on cabling specifications. Fluke Networks cautions that TIA and ISO standards are not necessarily completely equivalent, so a category label should be understood in the context of the standard and installation requirements being applied.
For installed cabling, category is not the same as certification
Seeing Cat 6 or Cat 6A printed on cable and connectors does not by itself certify a permanent installed link. Fluke Networks says certification also depends on correct installation and a passing test from a compliant field tester. Its guide describes three conditions: the cabling and connecting hardware meet relevant standards, installation follows the standard without degrading link performance, and the link passes a compliant field test. A quick decision checklist
- Need up to 1 Gb/s? Cat 5e is generally sufficient for a compliant link up to 100 m; Cat 6 or Cat 6A is also an option.
- Need 10 Gb/s over a short existing or planned link? Cat 6 may work, but suitability depends on the actual link and installation.
- Need 10 Gb/s over a channel up to 100 m? Choose Cat 6A and confirm the devices at both ends support 10 Gb/s.
- Installing permanent cabling? Make sure the entire channel is built to the relevant requirements; a category marking alone is not a certification result.
Fluke Networks dates Cat 5e ratification to 2001, Cat 6 to 2002 and Cat 6A to 2009 in its Ethernet cable categories and history overview. Those are standards-history dates, not measures of current market adoption.
