Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Choose story chronology instead if your priority is Dracula’s history and the Belmont family. Neither route makes every game equally accessible, and modern collections provide useful entry points without covering the whole series.
Which order should a beginner choose?
| Order | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Release order | Seeing the series’ design and storytelling develop, and following references as they originally appeared. | The stories jump around in fictional time; prequels arrive after games set later in the saga. |
| Story chronology | Following the Belmont lineage and recurring conflict with Dracula by fictional era. | You jump between generations of hardware, controls and play styles, and not every game’s continuity is settled. |
| Collection-led | Playing titles gathered in collections available for your platform. | The collections divide the catalog and leave out some games. |
For most newcomers, release order is the clearest default. Start with Castlevania, then Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest and Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. The first is a more linear action game; Konami describes Simon’s Quest as emphasizing exploration and puzzle solving. Dracula’s Curse is a prequel in the story, set a century before Simon’s birth, even though it was released later.

After those, continue through the classic-era releases and move into later connected entries as your platform access allows. The point is not to finish every game before moving on: use release order as a way to see the franchise change, and choose games that suit your preferred style.
How to follow the commonly cited core timeline
The sequence below is a useful overview of the central saga, not an official, universally settled canon checklist. The dates are commonly cited fictional years; detailed chronology depends on fan-maintained timeline material, while Konami’s official history is a release catalog rather than a complete canon guide.

Can they save the city from the brink of destruction?

- Environment Hazards That Will make you grit your teeth - Biomes are packed with secrets, traps and puzzles. It is not just about muscles, it's about brains too!
- Castlevania: Lament of Innocence — 1094.
- Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse — 1476.
- Castlevania: Curse of Darkness — 1479.
- Castlevania: The Adventure — commonly placed in 1576; Belmont’s Revenge follows Christopher Belmont’s earlier victory, according to Konami’s collection description.
- Castlevania, followed by Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, the two Simon Belmont games.
- Rondo of Blood — 1792, followed by Symphony of the Night — 1797.
- Later Belmont-era stories include Bloodlines and Portrait of Ruin, whose story takes place in the World War II era.
- Aria of Sorrow — 2035, followed by Dawn of Sorrow — 2036.
The broad thread is a conflict recurring across centuries, carried by Belmonts and their allies. Lament of Innocence, released long after the earliest games, is a prequel set in 1094; Dracula’s Curse is another prequel, set before Simon’s story. Those jumps are why release order and story chronology answer different questions.
What is outside this core sequence?
Super Castlevania IV is commonly understood as a retelling or reworking of Simon’s first-game story, not a separate later Simon adventure. The continuity status or placement of Circle of the Moon, the Nintendo 64 games, Legends, multiplayer titles and crossovers is less straightforward. Treat them as separate explorations rather than silently inserting them into the core chronology.

Use collections as access routes, not as a complete timeline
Konami presents its digital Castlevania Anniversary Collection as a first step into the series. It includes eight games and a bonus history ebook, but it is a selection of classics rather than the whole franchise. Konami lists it for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Steam (PC); availability can vary by region and current store listings.

A practical first-playthrough route
- Begin with the Anniversary Collection if you want a straightforward digital entry point for classic-era games and it is available on your platform.
- Move to Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night through Requiem if available. They make a natural paired stop in the 1790s story era.
- Continue with the Advance and Dominus collections if you want to explore later handheld-era entries. These are catalog groupings, not a claim that every title belongs in one uncontested timeline.
- Switch to a chronology list only if story order matters more than historical release progression. Keep the core timeline’s caveats in view, especially for games whose continuity is disputed or unclear.
