Casio’s F-91W has lasted because the company sees its familiar shape and straightforward everyday use as part of the product, not as problems to solve. In an interview published by T3 on 30 August 2026, Casio Senior Marketing Campaign Manager Warren Halliwell said the company has avoided changing the watch’s fundamental wearing experience while updating processes behind the scenes. Casio dates the F-91W’s launch to 1989, so it was 37 years old on the interview’s publication date—not 35.
Why Casio resists adding features
Halliwell told T3 that there is always a temptation to add features, improve specifications or modernise parts of the watch, but that every change has consequences. The decision is not simply whether Casio can add something; it is whether people would still value the F-91W for the same reasons afterwards.

That puts a higher bar on changes than technical feasibility. A new function might broaden what the watch can do, but could also complicate its operation or alter the familiar experience people expect. Halliwell described the original aim as making a practical, affordable digital watch people would find useful—not setting out to create a design icon. The icon status, in his account, was an outcome rather than the design brief.

What “unchanged” means—and what has evolved
Casio says the F-91W’s form has remained unchanged since its 1989 launch. That is a claim about the recognizable design, not a claim that every aspect of production has stood still. Halliwell told T3 that manufacturing methods, production efficiency, testing procedures and quality-control systems have evolved while the user-facing experience has been preserved.

- Micro Light, Hourly Time Signal, Auto Calendar
- 12/24 Hour Formats
- Dial Code: Digital
- Water Resistant
- Daily Alarm
Those process details are the company representative’s account in an interview, rather than a published technical audit of every production change. The distinction matters: a classic can retain its familiar form without being manufactured exactly as it was at launch.
The deliberate limits of the F-91W
The current F-91W-1 is a basic digital watch, not a connected device. Casio lists time and date, a 1/100-second stopwatch, a daily alarm, an hourly time signal, an LED light, an auto-calendar and 12/24-hour time display. Its stopwatch measurement capacity is listed as 59’59.99”.
Rank #2
- AN ICON SINCE 1989 — THE WORLD'S MOST POPULAR DIGITAL WATCH — Introduced in June 1989 as a successor to the F-87W, the F-91W is popular for its low price, long battery life, and iconic design. As of 2026, production of the watch has reached 100 million units, making it the most sold watch in the world. A timeless design, unchanged since launch, that has earned a global cult following across generations.
- FEATHERLIGHT & SLIM — Urethane resin is employed for the case and band, and the module features a reduced number of components — every element of construction was reconsidered to secure high quality at an affordable price, resulting in a global hit watch that offers both affordability and long-lasting reliability. The case measures 38.2 × 35.2 × 8.5mm and weighs just 21 grams — barely noticeable on the wrist.
- 1/100-SECOND STOPWATCH WITH SPLIT TIME — The 1/100-second stopwatch covers elapsed time, split time, and 1st-2nd place timing up to 59'59.99" — precise enough for sports, training, cooking, and any timed activity. Handy features for day-to-day life also include a daily alarm, water resistance, and LED light functions.
- DAILY ALARM | HOURLY CHIME | AUTO-CALENDAR | LED LIGHT — Module 593 delivers functions for a daily alarm, chronograph/stopwatch, annual calendar, and hourly chime, with selectable 12 or 24-hour format. The auto-calendar and LED backlight round out a complete, practical feature set in a package that fits any wrist from 145 to 200mm.
- 7-YEAR BATTERY | MODULE 593 | 18MM LUG WIDTH — Powered by a CR2016 battery with an approximate 7-year life — often lasting 10 or more years in practice. The F-91W has an 18mm lug width, meaning standard 18mm NATO straps fit directly without any modification — making it one of the most customizable and mod-friendly watches available at any price point.
Casio’s series history also points to construction choices intended to keep the watch accessible and uncomplicated: a urethane resin case and band, fewer module components, and pins rather than standard spring bars connecting the band to the watch. These details show how the design is pared back; they do not, on their own, establish comparative durability or quantify Casio’s manufacturing costs.

What the current F-91W-1 specifications say

| Specification | Casio listing |
|---|---|
| Case and band | Resin |
| Dimensions | 38.2 × 35.2 × 8.5 mm |
| Weight | 21 g |

| Accuracy | ±30 seconds per month |
| Water resistance | Listed as water resistant; no depth rating is stated on the cited product listing |
| Compatible band size | 145–200 mm |
The battery-life figure is an estimate, not a guarantee. “Water resistant” without a stated depth rating is not a basis for assuming the watch is suitable for swimming or diving. Casio also notes that models and sales regions vary, so availability and specifications should be checked for the version sold where you live.
Who still finds value in a simple digital watch?
Halliwell described the F-91W’s audience as extending beyond people looking for an inexpensive everyday watch. He named fashion-conscious buyers, design enthusiasts, collectors and younger consumers as well. That is his qualitative assessment, not the result of a published audience survey.

For someone choosing between this kind of watch and a smartwatch, the useful distinction is the role each is meant to play. The F-91W provides timekeeping and a short list of familiar functions, with a listed battery estimate of about seven years. A smartwatch’s appeal generally lies in broader features and connectivity. The available specifications do not support a like-for-like reliability comparison, and a larger feature set is not automatically better for a buyer who wants a watch that stays simple.

Casio’s position, as Halliwell describes it, is that the F-91W’s value depends on more than adding functions or chasing higher specifications. The restrained design, accessible construction and familiar operation form a package; changing one part could change why people choose it. That does not mean the watch is frozen in time: Casio says production and quality processes have changed, while the recognizable form has been carried forward.
