If Cash App suspends or closes your U.S. account, you may lose access to the app even if money remains in it. Cash App’s terms say it may make remaining funds available for withdrawal, but that can be at its discretion, subject to fees and other terms. A hold may continue while an investigation is pending, so neither immediate access nor a fixed release deadline is guaranteed.
What happens to money in a closed Cash App account?
Cash App’s U.S. Terms of Service, last updated June 4, 2026, allow the company to suspend or terminate an account or access to a service at any time for any reason, including a Terms violation. The terms say Cash App will take reasonable steps to notify you by email or in the app the next time you try to access the service.

For funds held in custody when an account is closed, the operative terms say Cash App may make them available for withdrawal at its discretion, less applicable fees and subject to other terms. Cash App may require you to use a new bank account that was not previously associated with the account. The terms do not promise that every customer can withdraw immediately or set one deadline that applies to all account closures.
The Terms page also includes an annotation saying Cash App will settle pending transactions and return remaining funds, while noting it may hold funds if there is an investigation. Cash App explicitly states that annotations are not part of the legal terms and have no legal effect; rely on the operative terms about possible withdrawal, discretion, and holds when considering your case.

Why might you be unable to cash out?
A hold or investigation
Cash App says it may hold funds to cover risks including reversals, chargebacks, claims, fees, fines, penalties, or other liability. It may also hold funds until a pending investigation is resolved. The terms do not give a universal maximum hold period, so ask support whether a review or investigation is open and whether it affects your balance.
Identity verification or account information
Cash App may request additional information to validate your identity or account details. An account may remain restricted if you do not provide requested information or Cash App cannot verify your identity to its satisfaction. Its Security page says: “Under the Bank Secrecy Act and FinCEN regulations, we’re required to confirm who you are before you can send, receive, or withdraw money.” Verification can affect access, but completing it does not guarantee that a suspended account will be reopened.

Policy or activity concerns
Cash App’s Acceptable Use Policy and Terms describe policy violations, identity-verification issues, suspected unauthorized or illegal activity, and prohibited activities as contexts in which restrictions or termination may arise. These general policies do not establish why a particular account was restricted. Cash App’s terms also say it may not disclose details of its decision in certain virtual-currency suspension or termination circumstances.

What to do if Cash App banned or closed your account
- Check the notice. Review messages in the app and the email address associated with your account. Follow any account-specific instructions. The Terms do not promise detailed reasons for every decision.
- Contact official support. Ask whether your account is suspended, restricted, or closed; what is happening to the remaining balance; whether a review or investigation is open; and which withdrawal method is available.
- Follow the stated withdrawal instructions. If Cash App says a new linked bank account is required, use the method it specifies for your account. This option is not guaranteed to be available in every case.
- Keep a record. Save the notices and support responses, along with dates and any instructions about the balance or review. This can help you refer clearly to the account-specific issue in later support contacts.
How to contact Cash App safely
Cash App lists support through the app, cash.app/help, and 1-800-969-1940. Its Terms identify that number as the only phone number available for Cash App support. Start from the official app or site, or use the number stated in the Terms; do not rely on an unsolicited call, text, or search result claiming to provide account recovery.

Cash App says its representatives will not ask for your password, PIN, or full debit card number. Do not share those details with anyone claiming they can restore access or release your money.

If your issue concerns a prepaid account and support has not resolved it, Cash App’s Terms list the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau complaint channel at consumerfinance.gov/complaint and 1-855-411-2372. A complaint provides another route to raise the issue; it does not guarantee that Cash App will reverse an account closure or release funds immediately.
