What’s the consistent, correct way to implement cursor pagination? Agree on the endpoint’s ordering, continuation boundary, scope, consistency promise and error behavior before code is generated. A cursor is part of the API’s traversal contract—not just a token to pass between requests.
Start by defining the traversal contract
Before an agent writes a list endpoint, the team should specify what it means for a client to move from one page to the next. The database order, cursor contents, continuation predicate, request filters and client behavior must all describe the same traversal. If any one of them differs, the endpoint can skip or repeat records, accept a cursor in the wrong context, or promise stronger consistency than it provides.

For a newest-first feed, a possible order is created_at DESC, id DESC. This is an illustrative pattern, not a claim about any particular endpoint’s schema. The unique ID breaks ties when multiple rows share a timestamp. Symfony’s cursor pagination documentation likewise demonstrates a composite order using creation time and ID.

Write down five invariants before implementation
1. Order: define a deterministic total order
Choose sort fields that together establish an unambiguous position for every row in the result set. A timestamp alone may not do that: two rows can have the same timestamp. Add a unique tie-breaker, such as an ID, and use the same ordered fields and directions everywhere the endpoint defines traversal.

Prefer order values that do not change while a client is paging. With a mutable field such as updated_at, a row can move across the boundary between requests. The client may then miss it or encounter it in an unexpected position.
2. Boundary: make the cursor and predicate match the order
The cursor must represent the complete ordered boundary, not just one field from a composite order. For created_at DESC, id DESC, for example, continuation must account for both values so a tie on the timestamp is resolved consistently.

The exact seek comparison depends on sort direction, database behavior and schema details. Validate the predicate against the chosen database, including its treatment of null values; do not copy a tuple-comparison expression without checking those assumptions. The available framework guidance supports the composite-order principle but does not prescribe a database or schema for this endpoint.

3. Scope: bind the cursor to the logical feed
A continuation token should be valid only for the same logical source, effective ordering and relevant filters as the request that produced it. Include tenant or authorization scope when it is not already represented in the query. Keep this context stable for the feed: deriving it from the current page’s contents would let additions or deletions change the context and invalidate a cursor unexpectedly.

Clients should treat the token as opaque and return it unchanged. Opaque does not necessarily mean secret. Symfony documents authenticated but unencrypted cursor tokens, so sensitive information should not be placed in a token on the assumption that encoding conceals it.
4. Consistency: state whether traversal is live or fixed
Keyset pagination avoids the positional shifts associated with offsets when rows are inserted or deleted before the current position, provided the ordered values remain stable. It does not, by itself, make a sequence of HTTP requests read one frozen database snapshot. Symfony’s documentation puts the distinction plainly: “It is not a database snapshot.”

With a live traversal, new rows may appear as the client pages. A row inserted behind the current boundary or a row whose sort value changes can also affect what remains. If the product requires a repeatable point-in-time view—for example, for a reliable export—define a snapshot or immutable-feed strategy separately. Otherwise, document that the feed is live and that pagination does not freeze its contents.
5. Failure contract: reject invalid cursors clearly
Tokens can become invalid when ordering, schema, request context or signing secrets change. Return an explicit error for an invalid or stale cursor; do not silently restart at page one, which can make a client believe it continued successfully. Tell the caller how to recover, such as starting a fresh first-page request if it chooses to restart.

Define what clients receive
A response should include the page items and an unambiguous continuation signal. Depending on the API design, that can be a next cursor or link plus a boolean indicating whether another page exists. Microsoft’s Data API Builder documentation describes an after cursor with hasNextPage and endCursor; Zalando’s REST guidelines describe navigation links such as prev and next. If reverse navigation is supported, specify its cursor and link behavior too.
Set a bounded page-size policy, with a default and maximum chosen for product and workload needs. There is no universal page-size value established by these sources. Keep the client’s responsibility simple: follow the provided continuation value rather than decoding it, editing it or constructing one.
Choose pagination behavior for the actual use case

These are related but distinct choices: cursor versus offset describes how clients advance, while live versus snapshot describes what consistency the result promises. A cursor endpoint can still have live semantics.
