Cardsmith is described by its creator as a local tool that turns PDFs, PPTX slide decks and plain text into flashcards using an Ollama model, then checks whether each card’s cited source quote appears verbatim in the text it came from. That check helps you trace a card to its input; it does not prove the question or answer is accurate.
How Cardsmith turns documents into flashcards
In a launch post dated October 1, 2026, creator Arthur031221 describes a workflow that extracts text from a PDF, PPTX deck or plain-text file, divides it into chunks of roughly 120–900 words, and sends each chunk to a local model through Ollama. The model is asked to generate cards using facts from that chunk. These are creator-reported implementation details; the repository was not independently reviewed.

Each card includes a source_quote, described by the creator as the exact sentence supporting the card. Before saving, Cardsmith checks whether the quote is an exact substring of the original chunk. A card with a quote that does not match is flagged. Users can edit or delete cards in a preview. The creator says cards are stored in a local SQLite database, with a plain SM-2 review scheduler and export to an Anki .apkg deck.
In the creator’s words: “Every card comes back with a verbatim source_quote, the exact sentence the card is based on.” The key value is a visible path back to the document—not an automatic fact-check.

What the source-quote check can—and cannot—tell you
An exact substring match establishes that the cited words occur in the chunk Cardsmith processed. It does not establish that the generated question is clear, that the answer correctly captures the passage, or that the source document itself is correct. A card can cite a real sentence and still misstate what it means.
The creator acknowledges that the default 4B model sometimes paraphrases a quote, which can trigger the mechanical check even when the intended supporting passage is present. Treat a match as a traceability aid and a mismatch as a prompt to inspect the card and source, rather than treating either result as a complete quality verdict.

What the creator’s evaluation reports
The creator reports one run on a 3,248-word public-domain biology chapter, using a MacBook Air:

These figures come from the creator’s single run and manual sample, not an independent benchmark. The 92.5% figure applies only to those 40 rated cards; it should not be projected to other documents, models or users. The launch post says the repository’s eval directory contains the method and raw cards, but those materials were not independently retrieved for this account.

Scanned PDFs, equations and diagrams
The described workflow has no OCR. A scanned or image-only PDF therefore needs OCR preprocessing to turn its pages into readable text before Cardsmith can use it. In a same-day Reddit post, the creator says image-only equations and diagrams are skipped because the current workflow does not use OCR or a vision model. Selectable equations may be extracted as text, but their formatting can be imperfect.
For technical material, inspect the preview carefully: missing visual information or altered equation formatting can leave a card incomplete or misleading even when its source quote passes the substring check.

Privacy, setup and project status
The creator describes Cardsmith as a single-user, single-machine tool with no account and no sync. The workflow uses a local Ollama model and stores cards locally; the creator also describes export to Anki format. That is a local-first arrangement, not a promise about every component or installation: check the project’s current setup details before relying on it for a particular device or document.

Who may find Cardsmith useful
It may suit someone who wants a local document-to-card workflow and is willing to review generated material before studying. Source quotes make it easier to return to the passage behind a card, while editing and deletion in the preview provide a way to correct weak results. It is a poorer fit for image-heavy or scanned material unless OCR preprocessing is part of the workflow, and it is not described as a synced, multi-user service.
When comparing it with another flashcard tool, check whether source documents leave your device, what the tool’s “verification” actually tests, whether it can process scans and diagrams, which review and export options it supports, what account or setup it requires, and whether any quality figure comes from independent evaluation or a creator’s limited sample. The available evidence does not establish that Cardsmith is more accurate than alternatives.
