Card Authorization Expiry: Visa vs. Mastercard Capture Deadlines

Visa and Mastercard do not have one universal authorization-expiry period. Network capture and presentment deadlines vary by transaction type and region, and are separate from when an issuer releases a cardholder’s hold.

A Visa or Mastercard authorization does not have one universal “expiry” date. The deadline to submit or present a transaction under network rules is different from when an issuer releases the cardholder’s authorization hold. The applicable network deadline depends on the transaction type and location; an expired hold does not necessarily prevent a processor from accepting a later capture, but the customer may see the held funds restored before the charge posts.

What “authorization expiry” can mean

Merchants use “capture” to mean requesting payment after an authorization. Network rules set time limits for processing or presenting transactions, while an issuer controls how long an authorization hold remains on the cardholder’s account. Those clocks are related but not interchangeable.

  • Issuer hold expiry: When the issuer releases the reserved funds back to the cardholder’s available balance. Its timing can depend on issuer behavior and processor configuration.
  • Network processing or presentment deadline: How long the merchant has under the applicable network rules to process or present a transaction after approval.
  • Chargeback protection period: A separate period relevant to certain authorization-related chargeback rules. It is not a promise that an issuer will keep a hold in place or that a late transaction meets presentment requirements.
  • Settlement: The later movement of funds. It is not the same as approval, capture submission, or the cardholder’s view of a hold.

For example, Adyen says its issuing platform can process capture requests after an authorization expires. That is specific to Adyen’s issuing operation, not a guarantee about every acquirer or processor. If the issuer has already released the hold, a later capture may post after the cardholder has seen the funds return. Adyen’s explanation of authorization holds describes that distinction.

Visa capture processing timeframes

Visa’s April 2024 Visa Core Rules and Visa Product and Service Rules set maximum processing timeframes after a valid approval response. The general figures below are calendar days, measured from the date of a valid authorization; the applicable country-specific timeframe can override the general table.

Visa rule timeframe Transaction classes in the April 2024 general table
30 calendar days Certain cardholder-initiated card-absent transactions using an extended authorization indicator, and selected estimated-authorization categories, including specified cruise, lodging, and vehicle-rental cases.
10 calendar days Ordinary card-absent transactions and certain estimated-authorization categories, including specified vehicle-rental cases.
5 calendar days Other card-present transactions and merchant-initiated transactions.

These are not blanket Visa expiry periods: the transaction’s channel, initiation type, authorization indicator, and merchant category determine which entry applies. The rules also say an incremental authorization does not extend the general or country-specific processing timeframe.

Visa’s country-specific table includes examples that differ from the general figures: certain India domestic card-absent transactions have a two-day timeframe, other India domestic transactions have a four-day timeframe, and Japan domestic transactions are listed at 30 days. The applicable requirements depend on the transaction and country. Visa directs merchants to its Visa rules portal and acceptance agreement for applicable rules.

Mastercard capture and presentment timeframes

The Mastercard Transaction Processing Rules dated June 10, 2025 generally set purchase presentment deadlines based on authorization type.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Mastercard authorization or transaction class General rule timeframe
Purchase following a preauthorization Present within 30 calendar days after the latest authorization approval date.
Purchase following another authorization Present within 7 calendar days after approval, subject to transaction-specific and regional variations.
Payment transaction Present within 1 day under the cited rule section.
Refund transaction Present within 5 days under the cited rule section.

Mastercard also has a separate rule for final authorizations in dual-message environments: the transaction generally must be presented for clearing within seven calendar days of approval, and the presented amount must equal the authorized amount. For India domestic transactions in a dual-message environment, the rule specifies four calendar days and the amount must match the approved amount. These requirements are not a general allowance to capture any transaction within seven days; apply the rule for the authorization and region involved.

Mastercard publishes its rules and compliance programs online. The rules caution that they can change and that official posted rules prevail if copies conflict.

Why the network deadlines do not tell you when the hold expires

A network deadline governs transaction processing or presentment. It does not establish how long a particular issuer will display an authorization hold. Adyen’s issuing documentation, for example, says Visa timing can vary by merchant category and location, and Mastercard timing by authorization type; that description applies to Adyen’s issuing platform and should not be treated as a universal issuer schedule.

Mastercard’s rules also describe authorization-related chargeback protection periods under message reason code 4808, including 30 days for preauthorizations and seven days for final authorizations in general point-of-sale provisions, with regional exceptions. Those periods are separate from both the issuer’s hold and the network’s presentment deadline; they are not a safe harbor for late presentment.

How to determine the deadline for a specific transaction

  1. Identify the transaction record. Confirm the network, approval date, transaction country, domestic or cross-border status, card-present or card-absent channel, and whether it was cardholder-initiated or merchant-initiated.
  2. Check the authorization classification. Determine whether it is a preauthorization, final authorization, estimated authorization, extended card-absent authorization, or another authorization type. For Visa, check the relevant merchant category and indicator; for Mastercard, distinguish a preauthorization from another authorization and identify whether final-authorization rules apply.
  3. Apply the relevant network rule and regional modification. Use the applicable Visa table or Mastercard rule section, including country-specific or regional provisions. The figures above come from Visa’s April 2024 rulebook and Mastercard’s June 10, 2025 rules, so consult the current official materials rather than assuming those editions remain unchanged.
  4. Confirm processor and acquirer handling. Check the capture deadline shown in your payment platform and the terms or guidance from your acquirer. Ask specifically whether the displayed date is an authorization-hold expiry, a capture submission cutoff, or a clearing/presentment deadline.
  5. Handle unused approvals as required. If the transaction will not be completed, follow your processor’s and network’s requirements for reversing or releasing the unused authorization; do not leave an unneeded hold outstanding based only on a presumed expiry date.

Visa’s public rules page identifies the rules resource and points merchants to their acceptance agreement for additional requirements. Mastercard likewise cautions that its rules can change. Operational decisions should be based on the current applicable network rules and the merchant’s acquirer or processor guidance, not a single card-brand-wide day count.
