Announced by the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) on 5 October 2026, it is Scotland’s first saltmarsh flux tower and the most northerly addition to a UK coastal monitoring network. Its measurements are intended to improve understanding of saltmarsh carbon storage—not to establish Caerlaverock’s carbon balance before data have been collected and assessed.
What the Caerlaverock tower measures
The gas flux tower measures carbon exchange in real time: how carbon moves between the saltmarsh and the atmosphere. The aim is to build evidence about the habitat’s carbon-storage potential and role in climate mitigation. The announcement does not specify the tower’s model, sensors, gas species measured, sampling intervals or when its first results will be available. UKCEH’s announcement describes the project’s purpose, but does not report a carbon-balance result for Caerlaverock.

Why saltmarsh can store carbon—and why measurement matters
Saltmarsh plants take up carbon dioxide through photosynthesis. Tides can also deposit carbon-rich sediment and organic matter among the plants’ roots and stems. But the net climate effect depends on more than carbon uptake: when a saltmarsh becomes unstable and its sediment erodes, greenhouse gases formed in the soil can be released at enhanced rates. The balance therefore needs to be measured over time and across locations, rather than inferred from one process or one site.

How the new site fits UK monitoring
The Caerlaverock installation is part of a collaborative network of coastal flux towers. UKCEH says greenhouse-gas fluxes vary across both space and time, so longer-term measurements at multiple sites are important. The Solway site adds a northern location to that evidence base; it is not, on its own, a definitive result for Scotland or the UK.

The project involves UKCEH, the Scottish Government, NatureScot and WWF-UK. Scottish Government, NatureScot and WWF-UK funding, with support from Postcode Lottery players, made it possible. NatureScot Coastal Habitats Adviser Corallie Hunt called the installation an important milestone for environmental research and a priority in Scotland’s Blue Carbon Action Plan.
What existing figures do—and do not—tell us
UK-wide estimates and findings from another estuary offer context, but they are not measurements from Caerlaverock.

| Evidence | What it says | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Saltmarsh loss | About 85% of UK saltmarsh has been lost since the mid-19th century, according to UKCEH in 2025. UKCEH attributes losses to land reclamation for agriculture, development and coastal defences, pollution and climate change. | UK-wide estimate; not a Caerlaverock site statistic. UKCEH, 2025 |
| Potential net carbon sink | UKCEH’s 2026 overview estimates a potential net sink of 6.5 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per hectare per year for natural UK saltmarshes. | An estimate for natural UK saltmarshes, not a measured Caerlaverock result. UKCEH, 2026 |
| Ribble Estuary measurements | One year of tower data found that spring and summer CO₂ uptake exceeded autumn and winter release. | Finding from the Ribble Estuary in Lancashire; not evidence of Caerlaverock’s balance. UKCEH, 2025 |
Could the data affect the UK Greenhouse Gas Inventory?
The project is intended to provide evidence relevant to possible future inclusion of saltmarsh in the UK Greenhouse Gas Inventory. UKCEH’s January 2026 overview said saltmarsh was not then included in the Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry sector. The tower’s installation does not mean that policy has changed: any future treatment would require the evidence and policy process to support it.
