If CaptureKit returns an authentication error, check the HTTP status and the JSON error message first. CaptureKit uses the x-api-key header for authentication, but a 401 can mean either a bad or inactive key or a rate limit. Use the free /v1/usage endpoint to test the key separately from screenshot settings, then check API Logs for the failed request.
1. Read the status and error message
CaptureKit recommends checking the status code and then reading the response body. The body includes a human-readable error description. A 401 by itself does not tell you whether the key is wrong or the request has been rate-limited. See CaptureKit’s Error Handling documentation.
For example, CaptureKit’s guide says an authentication error may report: “Your x-api-key header is missing or contains an unrecognized value.” If the message instead identifies a rate limit or quota, use the backoff steps below rather than changing a valid key.
2. Check the API key header
For a new integration, send the key from your CaptureKit dashboard in the x-api-key request header. The current Introduction documentation also lists a query-string option, but the header is the clearest choice for keeping the secret out of URLs and logs.

- Confirm the header is named exactly
x-api-key, including the hyphens. - Check that your request actually sends the header on the API call that failed.
- Copy the key from the dashboard’s API Keys area again; watch for leading or trailing whitespace or an older key.
- Do not put the secret in public browser-side code, a public repository, or a URL that may be logged. Load it from an environment variable or another secret store.
3. Verify the key’s state
If the header is present but CaptureKit does not recognize the value, inspect the key in the dashboard:
- Inactive: activate the key if you intend to use it.
- Expired: extend it if that option is available, or generate a replacement and update the integration.
- Invalid or unrecognized: copy the correct key or create a new one, then replace the value used by your application.
After changing a key, restart or redeploy the application if it reads environment variables only at startup.

4. Test authentication without taking a screenshot
CaptureKit’s /v1/usage endpoint is free and can help determine whether authentication works before you investigate capture parameters. The quick start recommends storing the key outside source code and checking API Logs after the request. See the Quick start.

5. Distinguish a rate limit from a credential failure
CaptureKit’s error guide uses 401 for rate limiting as well as authentication problems. When the response message names a rate limit or quota, pause and retry after a delay; do not retry continuously. If limits are reached regularly, review the plan limit or per-key quota. When the message identifies a missing, inactive, expired, or unrecognized key, fix the header or key instead of retrying blindly.
6. Check for an older request format
CaptureKit’s migration notice, published February 19, 2026, describes updated paths under /v1/ and the query parameter x_api_key in place of the former access_key. Its screenshot route is /v1/capture. The current introduction documentation lists x-api-key as the header method and x_api_key as a query-string option. If you maintain an older integration, compare its path and key format with the exact endpoint documentation; for new requests, prefer the documented header. 7. Use API Logs to locate the failing request
In CaptureKit’s dashboard, open API Logs and match the failed call by its timestamp. Inspect the request details and returned error to see whether the application sent the expected authentication method and whether the failure was a rate limit. CaptureKit includes API Logs in its standard integration workflow; its documentation help center links to the relevant guidance.

Does every CaptureKit 401 mean my API key is wrong?
No. CaptureKit also uses 401 for rate limiting. Read the response’s error message to tell the cases apart.
Can I use a query parameter instead of the x-api-key header?
Current CaptureKit documentation also lists the x_api_key query parameter. For a new integration, use the documented x-api-key header so the secret is not exposed in the URL.
