To capture lazy-loaded content and finish at the page’s original scroll position, save both scroll coordinates, scroll through the content in viewport-sized steps to trigger loading, wait for the content you need, restore the saved coordinates, and then take the screenshot. This returns the page to its starting coordinates at capture time; it does not guarantee that the page never visibly moves or that every site’s lazy-loading behavior will be triggered.
Why a full-page screenshot can miss lazy-loaded content
A full-page option controls how much of the document the screenshot includes. It does not, by itself, prove that offscreen images or other content have loaded. Browsers can defer images, iframes, video, and audio until they are near the viewport, and sites can use JavaScript with Intersection Observer to react when content enters the viewport or a scroll container.

That distinction matters because a screenshot can extend beyond the visible viewport without the page experiencing the scroll or intersection events its lazy loader expects. This is an inference from the documented event model and screenshot options, not a guarantee about every browser’s capture implementation. MDN also cautions that the page’s load event may fire while lazy resources remain unloaded: MDN’s lazy-loading guide.

Playwright describes page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) as capturing the full scrollable page, and Puppeteer likewise documents a full-page option. Those options define capture extent; check that the content is actually rendered before relying on the resulting image.

How to load content below the fold and return to your position
- Save the starting coordinates. Record both horizontal (
x) and vertical (y) scroll positions. Do not assume horizontal scrolling is zero. - Scroll through the relevant page. Use steps no larger than the viewport height so that sections come near or into view. Allow page handlers and requests to run; wait for expected content or images when possible rather than relying only on a fixed delay.
- Confirm readiness. Check for the specific text, elements, or images you need. A completed
loadevent alone does not establish that lazy resources are ready. - Restore the saved position. Scroll back to the recorded coordinates, then wait for layout to settle before capturing. If content was inserted above the viewport or the page shifted, the same coordinates may now show a different element.
- Choose the capture extent. Use a full-page option for the whole document. For a viewport-only image, capture after restoring the original position without the full-page option.
Here is illustrative JavaScript pseudocode for that sequence. It is not a tested, drop-in sample: provide site-appropriate waits and checks in place of waitForRelevantContentOrBriefSettle() and waitForLayoutToSettle(). It assumes a Playwright-like page object and a page that remains available for evaluation.
const original = await page.evaluate(() => ({ x: scrollX, y: scrollY }));
try {
let height = await page.evaluate(() => document.documentElement.scrollHeight);
const step = await page.evaluate(() => innerHeight);
for (let y = 0; y < height; y += step) {
await page.evaluate(y => scrollTo(0, y), y);
await waitForRelevantContentOrBriefSettle();
// Re-read if loading appends content or increases page height.
height = await page.evaluate(() => document.documentElement.scrollHeight);
}
await page.evaluate(({ x, y }) => scrollTo(x, y), original);
await waitForLayoutToSettle();
await page.screenshot({ fullPage: true });
} finally {
// Restore even if a wait or capture step fails.
await page.evaluate(({ x, y }) => scrollTo(x, y), original);
}
For a viewport-only screenshot, omit fullPage: true. The finally restoration is useful when later steps fail, but it only restores coordinates; it cannot undo site-side effects or guarantee the same visual content at those coordinates after layout changes.

Infinite feeds, appended content, and virtualized lists
A single pass over the initial document height may stop too soon if scrolling appends more content. Recheck the height during the sweep, as in the example, and use the site’s own completion signal where available. An infinite feed may have no natural end, while a virtualized list may remove offscreen items from the rendered DOM. Define the target content or completion condition explicitly rather than assuming that reaching the initial bottom means everything has loaded.
Capturing a specific element
Puppeteer documents that taking an element screenshot can scroll a hidden element into view. If you use that behavior and the page must finish at its starting position, restore the saved coordinates after the element capture as well.

Can the page avoid visible movement?
Returning to the original coordinates before capture is different from ensuring the user never sees scrolling. The workflow above does not guarantee invisible movement across all page scripts. A separate page or browser context, or an offscreen capture strategy, may avoid moving the user’s current view, but verify that the target site’s lazy loader still activates in that setup. The documented references do not establish one universal no-visible-scroll technique.
Browser capture options and what they do
| Option | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
Playwright page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) |
Captures the full scrollable page. | It does not establish that all lazy content has loaded. See Playwright’s screenshot documentation. |
| Puppeteer full-page screenshot | Captures the full page. | It does not establish lazy-content readiness. Its element screenshot behavior may scroll a hidden element into view. See Puppeteer’s screenshot guide. |
Chrome DevTools Protocol Page.captureScreenshot with captureBeyondViewport |
Supports capture beyond the viewport. | It does not document a cross-site guarantee that lazy content is ready. See the Chrome DevTools Protocol Page domain. |
For any of these, treat full-page extent and content readiness as separate checks.

Troubleshooting common misses
- Images are blank or absent. Scrolling may not have brought them near enough to the viewport, or the image request may still be pending. Wait for the specific image or application state you need, then verify it rendered before capture.
- The page looks complete after
load, but the screenshot is not. Lazy resources can load after that event. Check the target resources or rendered elements directly. - Content lower down never appears. The site may need a longer settling interval, a particular scroll container rather than the window, or an application-specific completion condition. Identify the relevant container and wait for its expected content.
- The page height keeps changing. Re-read the height during the sweep and set a meaningful stopping condition. Appended feeds may keep extending indefinitely.
- The restored position shows the wrong content. A coordinate is not an element anchor. Content insertion or layout shifts may have changed what appears at that position; wait for layout to settle or restore relative to a known element if your application supports it.
- An element screenshot moves the page. Puppeteer may scroll a hidden element into view for capture. Save and restore the coordinates around that operation.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call request can capture a URL as an image; the API supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded. For a page screenshot:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before the shot, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed; response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for free.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a full-page screenshot automatically trigger lazy loading?
Not necessarily. Full-page capture sets the screenshot extent; it does not guarantee that a site’s viewport-triggered loading has run.
