First identify where the delay appears: the software preview, the TV or monitor connected to HDMI out, or the timing between audio and video. For gameplay, use a compatible HDMI passthrough display instead of relying on the capture preview when possible.
Why is my capture card delayed?
“Capture card delay” can describe three different problems: a lagging image in capture software, a delayed or unstable signal on a passthrough display, or audio and video that do not line up. The first is often an expected part of the card’s software-preview path; the others call for different checks.

The computer preview is behind
The software preview is not necessarily a live, zero-latency gameplay display. Elgato says its Game Capture HD software preview is delayed by 2 to 3 seconds because of the model’s H.264 compression chip. For the separate Game Capture HD60 model, Elgato describes the preview delay as almost a second, also attributed to H.264 compression. These are manufacturer figures for those named models, not measurements for capture cards generally or for HDMI passthrough. Elgato’s Game Capture HD guidance and HD60 guidance explain the distinction.
The passthrough display is delayed, flickering, or blank
A late computer preview does not establish that the card’s HDMI output has the same delay. Passthrough routes the source’s video onward to a TV or monitor while the card also sends a feed to the computer. Elgato describes passthrough on its products as adding no delay to the connected display, but exact behavior and supported signal modes depend on the device and setup. If that display is blank or flickers, treat it as a signal or compatibility issue rather than a preview-latency fix.

Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Audio and video are out of sync
This is a synchronization problem: one source is arriving earlier than another. A delay control can align them, but it does not remove latency from the capture preview itself.
How do I fix capture card lag while playing?
If the lag is only in the computer window, the practical fix is to play on a separate TV or monitor connected to the card’s HDMI passthrough, if the card supports it. The computer can continue capturing the signal while you watch the passthrough display. Elgato’s capture-card explainer describes this signal path.

- Connect the console, camera, or other video source to the capture card’s HDMI In.
- Connect the card’s HDMI Out to the TV or monitor you will play or watch on.
- Connect the capture card to the computer and open your capture or streaming software to record or stream the feed.
- Use the TV or monitor for gameplay; use the software preview to check framing, capture, and stream output rather than as the gameplay screen.
Passthrough is only useful if the card has an output and its supported resolution and refresh rate work with both the source and display. Confirm those specifications for the exact model. A delayed software preview alone is not a reason to replace a cable or change a synchronization setting.

Why is my capture card preview behind my TV?
The TV may be showing the HDMI passthrough path while the computer is showing the processed software-preview path. Those are separate routes, so the preview can lag behind the TV without demonstrating a fault in the TV output. Elgato’s model-specific preview figures illustrate why the difference can be noticeable; they should not be generalized to other cards or assumed to describe passthrough.

If the TV instead loses signal or flickers, check the signal chain:
- Verify that the source is powered on and produces an image when connected directly to a screen.
- Check the routing: source to capture card HDMI In, then card HDMI Out to the display.
- Check the HDMI connections and try a known-good compatible cable if a connection problem is suspected. A cable change will not eliminate compression-related software-preview latency.
- Check whether protected content is invoking HDCP restrictions; protected output may not be available for capture.
- Confirm that the display supports the resolution and refresh-rate mode being sent. Unsupported modes or EDID negotiation problems can cause flickering or no signal.
For symptom-specific steps, consult Elgato’s no-signal troubleshooting guide and its guide to a flickering or missing monitor/TV signal.

How do I correct audio and video sync?
First determine which source is early. If video arrives before audio, delay the video; if audio arrives first, delay the audio. The appropriate control and amount depend on the software and setup, so there is no universal offset.
Elgato’s 4K60 S+ instructions describe using OBS’s Video Delay (Async) filter to delay a video source and an audio Sync offset to delay audio. These controls align sources; they do not make a delayed gameplay preview respond faster. See Elgato’s source-delay instructions for the documented application steps.

Can I play through OBS without input delay?
Do not assume an OBS preview is an appropriate low-latency gameplay display. Capture and preview processing can put the image behind the source. If your setup includes compatible HDMI passthrough, play from the connected TV or monitor and let OBS handle capture and streaming. If you must play from the computer, the supplied model-specific guidance does not establish a universal setting that removes preview delay; check the card’s documentation for that model rather than applying an audio/video sync filter as a latency cure.
What to check before choosing a capture card
If your current setup has no separate display path for gameplay, HDMI passthrough is a relevant feature to look for. Before choosing a model, verify that its input and passthrough support the resolution and refresh rate you need, that its computer connection and software work with your system, and that it is compatible with your console and display. The cited guidance does not establish a current cross-brand latency ranking, so a model should not be selected on an unsupported claim that all cards have a particular preview delay.
