CanvasDesk is an early-stage project exploring whether an infinite canvas can do more than hold sketches: its connected calculation nodes are intended to make a diagram an executable mathematical model. It is a proof of concept, not an established replacement for an operating-system desktop.
What is CanvasDesk?
CanvasDesk is described by its creator as an infinite-canvas workspace for visual mathematical modeling. Instead of keeping a diagram in one tool and its calculations in a spreadsheet, the idea is to connect calculation nodes on the canvas so the diagram itself expresses the model. The creator sums up that idea as “the diagram is the formula.”

In the creator’s account, the project began as a side project about replacing the traditional desktop with an infinite canvas, then shifted toward a proof of concept for desktop operating systems and the browser. The broader desktop-replacement idea remains an exploration; the project’s more concrete focus is modeling through connected calculations. Daniel K’s project account describes that motivation and the prototype’s origins.

The project README describes a graph of calculation nodes. A user creates nodes, connects them to represent relationships, and passes values through the graph. When an input changes, downstream calculations are intended to update. In this approach, the visual layout is not merely an illustration of calculations maintained elsewhere: the connected nodes represent the calculation flow itself.

The README gives service capacity, unit economics, startup runway, queueing formulas, and financial functions as examples of intended uses. These are project-described capabilities, not independently verified results. The project’s framing comes from a workflow problem identified by its creator: teams may sketch a product or system on a board, calculate economics or capacity in a spreadsheet, then copy changes back to the diagram. He says online whiteboards he used did not support the mathematical calculations he wanted; that is his experience, not a claim about every whiteboard product.
Where can you use CanvasDesk?
The project README describes both browser access and downloadable desktop build artifacts. The availability and compatibility details below are maintainer statements and may change as development continues.

| Option or platform | What the project README says |
|---|---|
| Browser | Chrome or Edge is required; Firefox is described as experimental. |
| Windows | Full functionality is stated to be available. |
| Linux | A desktop build is listed; platform integrations are still being completed. |
| macOS | A desktop build is listed; platform integrations are still being completed. |
These statements describe the project as documented, not guaranteed feature parity across platforms. Check the CanvasDesk repository for its current README and build information before relying on a particular platform or browser.

How mature is the project?
The creator presents CanvasDesk as a proof of concept, and the repository describes it as actively developed while seeking its first external users. The available sources establish neither broad adoption nor independent validation, performance benchmarks, or product-market fit. The README’s use cases should therefore be read as examples of the intended modeling scope, not as evidence that those scenarios have been tested successfully at scale.
Daniel K reports spending $80 on a Kimi Code subscription, working for about 2.5 weeks, and making more than 3,000 requests to AI agents while building the proof of concept. Those are figures reported by the creator about his own effort, not independently verified measurements or product-performance results.

CanvasDesk’s central experiment is to make the canvas computational: connected nodes are intended to carry values and recalculate a model as inputs change. That could bring a diagram and its calculations into one workspace, addressing the handoff the creator describes. For now, however, CanvasDesk is an early-stage project, and its documented features and platform support should be treated as evolving project claims rather than proof of a mature desktop replacement.
