Canvas 2D draws the board and pieces into a bitmap; DOM rendering represents them with HTML elements. For a small, mostly turn-based board, choose based on redraw needs, interaction and accessibility, and implementation complexity—not an assumed speed advantage. The available sources do not provide a controlled performance comparison for an 8×8 draughts board.
How do Canvas and DOM rendering differ?
The WHATWG HTML Standard describes Canvas as a resolution-dependent bitmap that scripts can use to render game graphics and other images. Canvas is immediate-mode: your code issues drawing commands, and the result appears on the canvas surface. Individual squares and pieces are not separate DOM elements.

With DOM rendering, the board, squares, and pieces are document elements styled and laid out through browser mechanisms. Browser rendering involves stages including DOM and CSSOM processing, render-tree construction, and layout, as covered in MDN’s web performance guides. That fact alone does not show those stages are the main cost of a small draughts board—or that replacing elements with Canvas improves the player’s perceived response time.

Which approach fits the board’s workload?
| Consideration | Canvas 2D | DOM |
|---|---|---|
| Board and piece representation | Drawn into a bitmap; your code manages visual rendering. | Represented by document elements and styling. |
| Frequent visual changes or custom effects | A candidate when the scene is highly dynamic or graphics-heavy. | May be straightforward when changes map naturally to a small set of elements. |
| Ordinary interface controls and document structure | Does not provide the same built-in document semantics; add deliberate support for interaction and status. | HTML elements can provide structure and controls directly. |
| Performance outcome for an 8×8 board | Not established by a controlled board-specific comparison in the cited sources. | Not established by a controlled board-specific comparison in the cited sources. |
A turn-based game that redraws only after a move may have a very different workload from one with continuous piece animation, hover effects, or other frequent visual updates. Consider update frequency, animation, implementation effort, keyboard and assistive-technology support, and responsiveness on the browsers and devices your players use. For a simple board, keeping the board in the DOM may be the clearer choice; Canvas is worth evaluating when its drawing model better suits the graphics or update pattern. Neither is a universal winner.

How can you make a Canvas board efficient?
Canvas optimization techniques can reduce unnecessary drawing work, but their value depends on the implementation and browser. MDN’s Canvas optimization guidance and web.dev’s Canvas performance guidance describe techniques to test:
- Cache stable graphics. If parts of the board are repeatedly drawn, test pre-rendering them to an offscreen canvas. Keep the cached surface close to the content’s size so you do not copy unnecessary pixels.
- Batch drawing operations. Group compatible work where practical rather than issuing avoidable, scattered operations.
- Limit redraws when it is simple to do so. If you can reliably track which parts changed, redraw those regions instead of the whole scene. Do not add fragile bookkeeping for a negligible workload.
- Draw in response to state changes for a turn-based game. If nothing is animating, a new frame may only be needed after a move or another visible state change.
These are techniques to evaluate, not guaranteed improvements for every board or device.

How should animation and latency be handled?
For Canvas animation, use requestAnimationFrame to schedule work in line with the browser’s repaint cycle, rather than relying on a fixed-interval timer. Its callback frequency is not guaranteed to be constant; base animation progress on elapsed time, as described in MDN’s JavaScript performance guidance and the web.dev Canvas performance article.
The HTML Standard also describes the Canvas 2D desynchronized context setting as something a user agent may use to optimize rendering latency. “May” matters: it is not a guarantee of consistent latency across browsers, so do not treat it as a substitute for testing.

What accessibility work does a Canvas board require?
A Canvas board does not make each drawn square or piece a semantic HTML element. If you use it, plan how players will select and move pieces with a keyboard, discover legal moves and current selection, and receive updates about game status through accessible interface content. Keep ordinary document content—such as headings and controls—in suitable HTML rather than drawing it onto the board. The HTML Standard’s Canvas guidance notes that Canvas is inappropriate for content such as a page heading when semantic elements are suitable.
DOM-based board elements can make structural representation more direct, but the game still needs an intentional keyboard interaction model and clear status feedback. Whichever rendering approach you choose, test the actual interaction rather than relying on appearance alone.

How do you decide with performance measurements?
- Define a representative workload. Include the board size, how often pieces move, whether animation runs, and which interactions or effects are active.
- Test both implementations on target combinations. Use the browsers and devices relevant to your players; browser and device differences can change the result.
- Repeat measurements and assess perceived response. A draw-loop timing alone does not capture the whole interaction experience.
- Report the setup with any comparison. State the workload, browser and device versions, and measurement conditions. Do not generalize one setup’s result into a universal Canvas-versus-DOM claim.
The cited sources offer general browser-rendering and Canvas optimization guidance, not a current, controlled head-to-head test of an 8×8 draughts board. No board-specific frame-rate, latency, or speedup figure is established by them.
