Canva iOS Background Removal: Steps, Limits, and Transparent PNGs

To remove a photo’s background in Canva on iPhone or iPad, open the photo in a design, select it, then tap BG Remover in the editor toolbar. Canva processes the image automatically. The feature is included with paid plans, and the photo must meet Canva’s file requirements.

Remove a photo background in the Canva editor

1. Open the photo in a Canva design.

2. Tap the photo to select it.

3. Tap BG Remover in the editor toolbar, then wait for Canva to process the background. Canva’s mobile instructions describe the control in the editor toolbar; its exact placement may vary by app version or editing context. See Canva’s background-removal instructions.

Open a photo from Projects instead

If the image is stored in Canva rather than already placed in a design, open Projects, go to Images, tap the photo’s more menu, choose Edit image, then tap BG Remover. This route leads to the same background-removal tool.

Refine the cutout

If the automatic result removes too much or leaves part of the background, use the Erase and Restore brushes to adjust the areas Canva documents for refinement. The Background Remover feature page also lists JPG, PNG, HEIC, and HEIF as supported photo upload formats.

Save the result with transparency

Removing the photo’s background and making the design page transparent are separate steps. To export a file with transparency, download the design as PNG and turn on Transparent background. Canva lists that download option for Pro, Teams, Business, Education, and Nonprofits plans. Follow Canva’s transparent-background download instructions.

What to check if BG Remover is unavailable

• Plan access: Canva says Background Remover is included with paid plans. If you do not see it, check whether your account has an eligible plan.

• Image size and type: Canva’s Help Center says Background Remover works only with photos under 9 MB and is not available for vector images. If your photo is too large, try a smaller file or a compressed copy.

• Large photos: Photos uploaded above 10 MP are downscaled to 10 MP after background removal, according to Canva’s Help Center.

Removing a video background on mobile

For background removal from a mobile video, Canva says to upload the video through the Uploads tab rather than from Camera Roll or Gallery. The original video must be under 10 minutes. These are video-specific conditions; the photo workflow above uses the selected image’s BG Remover control.
