Can’t Update Windows 11 or Install Drivers? How to Troubleshoot Both

Start with the Windows Update troubleshooter, then follow the specific error code. For drivers, check Windows Update or the official support page for the exact device model.

If Windows 11 updates or device drivers will not install, start with the Windows Update troubleshooter in Get Help, then use the exact error code to choose the next step. Update failures and driver-install failures can have different causes, so avoid applying a fix meant for a different code or device.

First, identify what is failing

Before changing settings, record the exact error code and what you were trying to install. A Windows Update error points to an operating-system update problem; a Device Manager error or failed driver package points to a particular device. Also note the device name and the PC or device manufacturer and model. Without those details, it is not possible to identify a specific faulty driver or confirm which package is compatible.

  • For a Windows update, note the error shown in Windows Update.
  • For a device, open Device Manager, locate the device, and record its error code and name.
  • Check that the PC is online, has enough free storage, and can restart.

Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter guidance, update error guidance, and Device Manager error-code guidance help distinguish the branches.

Run the Windows 11 Update troubleshooter

  1. Open the Get Help app and run the automated Windows Update troubleshooter. It checks for common problems and attempts repairs.
  2. If the issue remains, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then select Run beside Windows Update.
  3. Restart the PC when the troubleshooter finishes, then return to Windows Update and check again.

Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooters instructions describe the Get Help route for Windows 11 and the Settings fallback.

Use the update error code to choose a fix

If the troubleshooter does not help, look up the exact code in Microsoft’s Windows update troubleshooting guide. Update failures can involve incomplete or corrupt update data, a stopped service, insufficient storage, access or permission problems, or an interrupted download. The code is important: a remedy for one cause may not apply to another.

Back up important personal files before moving on to more involved repair steps. Microsoft’s normal update instructions are at Install Windows Updates.

Update or install a device driver

Check Windows Update first

Open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. Windows 11 delivers recommended drivers through Windows Update; optional driver updates may also be listed when available. Review the optional updates list for the driver you need before looking elsewhere. Microsoft explains the route in Automatically get recommended and updated hardware drivers.

Get a compatible package from the hardware maker

If Windows does not offer the driver, use the official support page for the PC maker or the device/component maker. Match the package to the exact model and Windows version. A similar-sounding device name is not enough to establish compatibility. If Device Manager shows an error, consult Microsoft’s Device Manager error-code instructions as well as the manufacturer’s guidance.

If Windows Update reports 0xC1900101

Microsoft lists an incompatible driver as one possible cause of error 0xC1900101; it is a clue, not proof that a particular driver is responsible. Its guidance suggests reviewing network and graphics drivers and also lists trying a clean boot. Keep the code and device details available, and follow the PC or component maker’s instructions before uninstalling a driver. See Microsoft’s error-specific update troubleshooting steps.

If Windows system files may be damaged

When code-specific steps point to damaged or missing Windows components, Microsoft documents DISM and System File Checker (SFC) as repair tools. Follow Microsoft’s current command order and syntax in Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files. DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update; if that client is not working, Microsoft describes using a suitable Windows installation or a side-by-side source on removable or network media. Back up personal files before attempting these repairs.
