Being unable to log in to YouTube can happen for many reasons, from a mistyped Google password to a browser cache problem, app glitch, network restriction, or temporary service outage. Since YouTube sign-in depends on your Google account, the issue may not always be with YouTube itself.
This guide walks through the most common causes of YouTube login problems and the practical fixes to try first. By checking your account credentials, service status, browser or app settings, connection, and security prompts, you can narrow down the source of the problem and get back into your account more quickly.

Check Your Google Account Credentials
YouTube sign-in uses your Google Account, so the first thing to confirm is that the email address and password work outside of YouTube. Go to accounts.google.com in a browser and try signing in there. If you cannot access your Google Account directly, the problem is not specific to YouTube; you will need to recover or verify the account before YouTube login will work.

Many people have more than one Google Account, especially if they use separate profiles for work, school, a brand channel, or an older YouTube account. If YouTube says it cannot find your account, try another Gmail address, a recovery email, or a phone number that may be attached to the account. If you manage a Brand Account, sign in with the Google Account that has access to that channel, then switch channels from the YouTube profile menu after you are logged in.

Reset your password if sign-in fails
If your password is rejected, use Google’s account recovery page rather than repeatedly guessing. Too many failed attempts can trigger temporary security blocks. Visit accounts.google.com/signin/recovery, enter your email or phone number, and follow the prompts. Google may ask for a previous password, a verification code sent to your recovery phone or email, or confirmation from a device where you are already signed in.
- Use a familiar device and location: Account recovery is more likely to succeed from a phone, computer, browser, or Wi-Fi network you have used before.
- Check your recovery inbox and SMS messages: Verification codes may arrive by email, text, or a Google prompt on another signed-in device.
- Update saved passwords: If you change your Google password, update your browser password manager, Android settings, iPhone settings, and any third-party password manager you use.
If you recently changed your Google password, YouTube may ask you to sign in again on every device. On shared TVs, streaming boxes, consoles, or older phones, remove the outdated account session and add it again with the new password. If you use passkeys, make sure you are approving the sign-in on the correct phone, tablet, or security key. For two-step verification, keep your backup codes or authenticator app available in case your main phone is offline.
Also confirm that the account has not been disabled, deleted, or restricted. If Google shows a message saying the account was disabled, follow the on-screen appeal or recovery steps. If the account belongs to a workplace or school, an administrator may have turned off YouTube access or changed sign-in rules. In that case, contact your IT administrator or try a personal Google Account to see whether YouTube itself is working.

Verify YouTube and Google Service Status
If your username and password are correct but YouTube still will not let you sign in, the problem may not be on your device at all. YouTube sign-in depends on several Google services, including Google Accounts, authentication servers, and sometimes services such as Google Play Services on Android. A temporary outage or degraded service can prevent login attempts from completing, cause endless loading screens, or return vague messages such as “Something went wrong” or “There was a problem signing you in.”
Start by checking whether YouTube is working for other people. Open the YouTube Help Community, Google’s official social channels, or a reputable outage-tracking site and search for recent reports related to YouTube login, Google sign-in, or account authentication. If many users are reporting the same issue at the same time, avoid repeatedly changing your password or modifying account settings. Mulle unnecessary attempts can make troubleshooting harder and may trigger extra verification checks.
How to check for a wider service issue
- Try YouTube in a private or incognito window: If the sign-in page fails before you even enter your account details, the issue may be related to Google’s sign-in service or a browser connection problem.
- Test another Google service: Visit Gmail, Google Drive, or Google Account settings and see whether you can sign in there. If you cannot access any Google service, the issue is likely tied to Google account authentication rather than YouTube alone.
- Use a different device or network: Attempt to sign in from a phone using mobile data, or from another computer on a different Wi-Fi network. If sign-in fails everywhere, a service disruption or account-level issue is more likely.
- Check recent outage reports: Look for spikes in reports mentioning YouTube, Google login, “accounts.google.com,” or two-step verification delays.
Pay attention to the exact behavior you see. If YouTube loads normally but fails only after you select your account, the issue may involve Google authentication. If videos will not load for anyone in your household, the problem may be broader than sign-in and could involve YouTube playback or your internet provider. If Gmail and Drive work but YouTube does not, the disruption may be limited to YouTube or to permissions associated with your YouTube channel, brand account, or supervised account.
When there appears to be a service disruption, the best fix is usually to wait and try again later. In the meantime, keep your current password unchanged unless Google specifically says it is incorrect. You can also leave your browser open on the sign-in page and retry after 15 to 30 minutes, or restart the YouTube app once reports begin to drop. If the service status looks normal and other users are not reporting similar problems, continue troubleshooting your browser, app, network, or account security settings.

Fix Browser-Related Sign-In Problems
If your Google account details are correct and YouTube services are working, the problem may be tied to your browser. YouTube sign-in relies on cookies, JavaScript, redirects, Google authentication pages, and saved site data. If any of these are blocked or corrupted, you may see a repeated sign-in loop, a blank page, an “Oops” message, or YouTube may sign you out immediately after you enter your password.
Clear YouTube and Google site data
Old cookies or cached authentication files can prevent YouTube from recognizing a fresh login. Instead of clearing your entire browser history, start by removing site data for YouTube and Google. In Chrome, go to Settings > Privacy and security > Third-party cookies > See all site data and permissions, then search for youtube.com and google.com and delete their stored data. In Edge, Firefox, or Safari, look for similar controls under privacy, cookies, or website data settings.
After clearing the data, close all browser windows, reopen the browser, and go directly to https://www.youtube.com. Click Sign in and complete the login again. If you manage mulle Google accounts, choose the correct one carefully, since browsers sometimes default to the last account used.
Check cookies, JavaScript, and extensions
YouTube sign-in can fail if your browser blocks cookies or scripts needed by Google’s authentication system. Make sure cookies are allowed for youtube.com, google.com, and accounts.google.com. If your browser is set to block all third-party cookies, temporarily allow them and try again, especially if the sign-in page opens in a pop-up or embedded window.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Disable ad blockers or privacy extensions temporarily: Some extensions block Google login redirects, tracking scripts, or consent prompts required for sign-in.
- Turn off script blockers: Extensions such as NoScript-style tools can stop YouTube from loading the authentication flow.
- Try an incognito or private window: This starts with fewer cached files and usually disables most extensions by default.
- Update your browser: Older browser versions may not support current security requirements used by Google sign-in.
If YouTube works in a private window, the issue is likely caused by cached data, an extension, or a custom privacy setting in your regular browsing profile. Re-enable extensions one at a time and test YouTube after each change to identify the one causing the problem.
Try another browser or reset the current one
Testing another browser is a quick way to separate a YouTube account issue from a browser-specific problem. If you cannot sign in with Chrome, try Firefox, Edge, or Safari. If sign-in works elsewhere, return to your main browser and reset its site permissions for YouTube and Google. You can also create a new browser profile, which gives you a clean set of cookies, extensions, and settings without deleting your main profile.
If the problem continues only in one browser, check whether strict privacy settings, blocked pop-ups, custom DNS-over-HTTPS settings, or security software browser add-ons are interfering with Google’s login pages. Once YouTube sign-in works again, keep cookies enabled for Google services and avoid clearing site data while you are actively signed in across mulle Google products.

Troubleshoot the YouTube Mobile App
If YouTube works in a browser but not in the mobile app, the problem is likely tied to the app itself, your phone’s stored data, or the Google account session on your device. Start with the simplest checks: close the YouTube app completely, reopen it, and try signing in again. On iPhone, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause, then swipe the YouTube app away. On Android, open the recent apps screen and dismiss YouTube, or use Settings > Apps > YouTube > Force stop.
Recommended Free Tools
Next, make sure the app is up to date. Open the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, search for YouTube, and install any available update. An outdated app can fail during sign-in if Google has changed authentication requirements or retired older app components. You should also update Google Play services on Android, since YouTube relies on it for Google account login, verification prompts, and secure sign-in.
Clear the YouTube App Cache and Data
Cached files can become corrupted and prevent the app from loading your account correctly. On Android, go to Settings > Apps > YouTube > Storage, then tap Clear cache. If that does not help, tap Clear data or Clear storage. This resets the app locally, so you may need to sign in again and reapply app preferences. On iPhone and iPad, iOS does not offer a direct cache-clearing button for most apps, so the closest fix is to delete and reinstall YouTube from the App Store.
- Android: Clear cache first, then clear data if the sign-in issue continues.
- iPhone or iPad: Delete YouTube, restart the device, then reinstall it.
- Both platforms: Restart the phone after reinstalling or clearing app data.
Refresh Your Google Account on the Device
If the app keeps looping back to the sign-in screen, shows the wrong account, or says it cannot connect to your Google account, remove and re-add the account on your device. On Android, open Settings > Passwords & accounts or Settings > Accounts, select your Google account, and choose Remove account. Then add it again from the same menu. On iPhone, open the YouTube app, tap your profile icon, choose Switch account, and remove the account from the device if available, then sign in again.
Also check that your phone’s date and time are set automatically. Incorrect time settings can break secure authentication because Google’s servers may reject sign-in requests that appear out of sync. Enable Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically in your device settings, then reopen YouTube. If you use a work, school, or supervised account, account restrictions may block YouTube access in the app even when your password is correct. In that case, try a personal Google account or contact the administrator who manages the account.
If none of these steps work, test YouTube on another phone or tablet using the same Google account. If the account signs in elsewhere, the original device likely has a local app, system, or settings problem. If the same account fails everywhere, move on to account security and verification fixes, since Google may be blocking the login until you confirm your identity.
Check Network, VPN, and Device Settings
If your Google account works elsewhere and the YouTube app or website still refuses to sign in, the problem may be outside YouTube itself. Network filtering, VPN routing, incorrect device time, restricted DNS settings, or blocked cookies can all interrupt the sign-in handoff between YouTube and Google. These issues often look like a login loop, a blank sign-in page, an error such as “Something went wrong,” or a page that keeps sending you back to the YouTube home screen without signing you in.

Test a Different Network
Start by switching networks to see whether the connection is the cause. If you are on Wi-Fi, turn it off and try mobile data. If you are on mobile data, connect to a trusted Wi-Fi network. Public networks in schools, hotels, airports, libraries, and workplaces may block Google authentication pages, restrict YouTube traffic, or require a separate browser-based login before other apps can connect properly.
- Open a regular browser tab and visit accounts.google.com to confirm the sign-in page loads.
- Try playing a YouTube video while signed out, then attempt to sign in again.
- Restart your router if the issue occurs on every device connected to your home Wi-Fi.
- Forget and reconnect to the Wi-Fi network on your phone, tablet, or computer.
Disable VPNs, Proxies, and Traffic Filters
VPNs and proxy services can trigger extra security checks or cause Google to reject a sign-in attempt if the connection appears to jump between regions. Temporarily turn off your VPN, proxy, private relay, ad-blocking DNS, firewall app, or web filtering tool, then reload YouTube and try again. On managed school or work devices, these settings may be enforced by an administrator, so testing on a personal device or another network can help confirm whether filtering is involved.

Correct Date, Time, and Device Settings
Google sign-in depends on secure certificates and timed authentication tokens, so a device with the wrong date, time, or time zone may fail to connect even when the internet seems fine. Set your phone, tablet, or computer to update the date and time automatically, then restart the device. Also check that your browser or app is allowed to use cookies, background data, and network access. On Android, review YouTube and Google Play services permissions. On iPhone or iPad, check whether Screen Time restrictions are blocking YouTube, Safari, or account changes.
If YouTube only fails on one device, reset that device’s network settings as a final local fix. This removes saved Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth pairings, and VPN profiles, so you will need to reconnect afterward. On phones, look for Reset Network Settings in the system reset options. On Windows or macOS, remove old proxy settings, renew the network connection, and restart the browser. After making these changes, open YouTube in a fresh session and try signing in again without a VPN or filtering service enabled.

If your password is correct but YouTube still will not let you sign in, Google may be blocking the attempt because it looks unusual. This can happen after repeated failed password attempts, a sign-in from a new country, use of a new device, suspicious account activity, or a recent password change. Since YouTube uses your Google Account, you need to resolve the security prompt on the Google side before YouTube access will work normally again.
Complete any Google verification prompts
Go to the Google Account sign-in page and try signing in there instead of directly through YouTube. If Google asks you to verify your identity, follow the prompt carefully. You may be asked to enter a code from a text message, approve the sign-in on another device, use an authenticator app, confirm a recovery email, or enter one of your backup codes. If you have mulle phones or old devices linked to the account, check each one for a Google prompt or notification.
- Check your recovery phone and email: Make sure you can access the phone number or email address attached to your Google Account.
- Look for device prompts: Open Gmail, Google, YouTube, or Settings on a device where you are already signed in.
- Use backup codes: If you saved two-step verification backup codes, use one when prompted.
- Try a familiar device and location: Signing in from your home Wi-Fi and a device you have used before can reduce extra verification checks.
Recover a locked or compromised account
If Google says your account is disabled, locked, or possibly compromised, use the official account recovery flow at accounts.google.com/signin/recovery. Enter the email address you use for YouTube and answer as many questions as accurately as possible. Use a device and browser that previously accessed the account, and avoid guessing repeatedly, since too many incorrect attempts can delay recovery. If you recently changed your password, remember that some devices and apps may require you to sign in again with the new password.

After regaining access, review your security settings before trying YouTube again. Open your Google Account, go to Security, and check recent security activity, signed-in devices, recovery options, and two-step verification settings. Remove any devices you do not recognize, update your recovery phone and email, and change your password if you see suspicious activity. If you use a brand account or manage a YouTube channel through permissions, also confirm that your Google Account still has the correct role for that channel.
Fix age, policy, or permission blocks
Some sign-in issues are not caused by the login process itself. If YouTube says access is restricted, the account may be affected by age settings, Family Link supervision, Workspace administrator rules, or channel permissions. For supervised accounts, a parent may need to adjust YouTube access in Family Link. For school or work accounts, contact the organization’s administrator if YouTube is blocked or sign-in is restricted. Once the account restriction is removed or verified, close YouTube, reopen it, and sign in again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does YouTube say my password is wrong when I can sign in to Gmail?
YouTube uses the same Google account as Gmail, so first confirm you are choosing the exact same email address on the YouTube sign-in screen. If the password works in Gmail but not YouTube, clear your browser cookies for google.com and youtube.com, then try signing in again. Also check whether you are using a work, school, or brand account that may have restrictions on YouTube access.

One-click scans. No signup required.
What should I do if YouTube keeps sending me back to the sign-in page?
This usually points to a cookie, cache, browser extension, or privacy setting problem. Try signing in from a private browsing window, disable ad blockers or privacy extensions temporarily, and make sure cookies are allowed for Google and YouTube. If that works, clear your normal browser’s cache and site data before signing in again.
Why can’t I sign in to the YouTube app on my phone?
Update the YouTube app and your phone’s operating system, then restart the device and try again. On Android, also check that Google Play Services is updated and that your Google account is still added under the phone’s account settings. On iPhone, remove and reinstall the YouTube app if clearing the app cache is not available.
Can a VPN or public Wi-Fi stop me from logging in to YouTube?
Yes, VPNs, proxies, school networks, workplace networks, and public Wi-Fi can trigger security checks or block parts of Google’s sign-in process. Turn off the VPN, switch to mobile data, or try another trusted network to see if the login works. If YouTube works elsewhere, the issue is likely with the network’s filtering or security rules.
What can I do if Google asks for verification but I don’t have my old phone?
Go to Google’s account recovery page and follow the prompts using a device, location, and browser you have used before. If possible, use a backup email, recovery phone number, saved passkey, or backup codes to confirm your identity. After you regain access, update your recovery options so future YouTube sign-ins are easier to verify.
