If WordPress asks for FTP credentials or reports “Installation failed: Could not create directory,” the theme is usually not the problem. WordPress cannot write to the installation’s filesystem, or the FTP/SFTP connection is aimed at the wrong WordPress directory. Check the active site’s path, the ownership and write access of wp-content, and the credentials supplied by your host. If the dashboard still cannot write, upload the extracted theme folder manually to /wp-content/themes/.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
The safest repair is to identify the real WordPress root first, then correct the server’s ownership model or use SFTP with valid host credentials. Avoid making every file broadly writable: permissions that ignore the way PHP runs can create a security problem without fixing the installation.

What the WordPress FTP error actually means
WordPress normally installs a theme by writing the uploaded package into your site’s filesystem. Its Filesystem API checks whether the process running WordPress can create and modify the required files. When direct writing is unavailable or the files would be owned by a different user, WordPress can switch to FTP or another transport and display a credentials form instead.
That prompt is therefore usually a filesystem-access signal, not a theme-design issue. The same underlying problem can appear as “Installation failed: Could not create directory,” a request for an FTP username and password, or a successful upload that never produces an activatable theme. A valid-looking login can still fail if the connection opens the wrong web root or a different WordPress installation.

Fix the problem in the right order
Work through these checks in sequence. Each step removes a different possible cause, and changing configuration before you know the real path or ownership model can make diagnosis harder.
1. Confirm that the theme package is valid
Use a theme ZIP downloaded from the WordPress Theme Directory or from the theme’s vendor. In the dashboard, open Appearance > Themes > Add New, choose Upload Theme, select the ZIP, and start the installation.
Keep the ZIP intact for the dashboard upload. For a manual installation, extract it on your computer first and check that the extracted folder is the actual theme folder, containing the theme files directly rather than another ZIP nested inside. A package that contains documentation, licensing files, or several unrelated folders may require you to identify the correct theme directory before uploading.

2. Identify the WordPress installation that serves the site
Do not assume that the first directory shown by an FTP client is the site root. Hosts use different web-root layouts, and one account can contain several sites or staging installations. Confirm which directory contains the WordPress installation serving the domain you are repairing.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Once you have identified that root, locate /wp-content/themes/. This is the destination for a manually uploaded theme. If you find several wp-content directories, stop and verify the active installation with your host before copying files. Uploading to a staging site, an old document root, or a neighboring installation will not make the theme appear in the dashboard for the live site.
3. Check ownership and write access
WordPress must be able to write to wp-content and to create the new theme directory beneath it. The required owner and group depend on how the host runs PHP and how the existing files were uploaded. A common failure occurs when files belong to the FTP user while the web-server process runs as another account, or the reverse. WordPress then cannot perform a direct write even though you can browse the directory in an FTP client.
Ask the hosting provider to confirm the correct ownership model for the account and to repair ownership if it does not match. This is safer than making files world-writable. Broad permissions can expose configuration and theme files while leaving the underlying user mismatch unresolved.
- Check the ownership and group of
wp-contentand itsthemesdirectory. - Confirm that the server process running PHP is allowed to create directories there.
- Ask the host which account should own files uploaded through FTP or SFTP.
- Have the host correct ownership when you cannot do so safely from the control panel.
4. Enter the credentials and path supplied by your host
When WordPress displays its filesystem form, use the connection details supplied for this hosting account. The fields can include:

- FTP or SSH username
- Password or other authentication value required by the host
- Server host name
- Port
- Path to the WordPress installation
A successful login is not enough if the path points at the wrong document root. Check that the path opens the same directory in which you found the active site’s wp-content. If the host supports it, select SFTP rather than unencrypted FTP. WordPress describes SFTP as the same basic transfer method with the password and other data encrypted while they travel between your computer and the website.
5. Install the theme manually when the dashboard cannot write
Manual installation is an official fallback, not a different kind of theme. Download the theme ZIP, extract it locally, and upload the extracted theme folder into the active site’s /wp-content/themes/ directory with an FTP client, SFTP client, or hosting file manager.
- Download the theme ZIP from the WordPress Theme Directory or the theme vendor.
- Extract the ZIP on your computer. Identify the folder that contains the theme files.
- Connect to the active WordPress installation using the host’s file manager, FTP, or SFTP details.
- Open the site’s
/wp-content/themes/directory. - Upload the complete extracted theme folder there. Do not upload only a selection of files.
- In WordPress, open Appearance > Themes.
- Locate the uploaded theme and select Activate.
If the theme does not appear after the upload, recheck the installation path and the folder nesting. The directory should be directly beneath themes; an extra wrapper folder can leave WordPress unable to detect the theme files.
6. Change filesystem settings only after the path is known
WordPress documents settings such as FS_METHOD, FTP_BASE, and FTP_CONTENT_DIR for hosts that require an explicit filesystem method or path. These values are host-specific. Do not add or change them as a guess.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFirst establish the real filesystem path and how PHP is executed. Then ask the host which method and path the account requires. An incorrect base or content directory can direct WordPress to a different installation, so configuration changes should follow a confirmed server setup rather than replace it.

Choose the best installation method
Each method solves a slightly different part of the problem. The deciding factors are whether WordPress can write directly, whether you know the active root, how the transfer is protected, and whether you can obtain server-side help.
| Method | When it fits | Security and control | Path requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| WordPress dashboard | WordPress can write to the filesystem or can use the credentials form successfully | Uses the site’s normal installer; no separate transfer client is required | The dashboard must be connected to the intended installation |
| Hosting file manager | The host provides a browser-based way to extract and copy files | Convenient for a one-time upload; ownership behavior is controlled by the host | You must open the document root that serves the site |
| FTP | You have valid FTP credentials and the host permits FTP access | Transfers files but does not encrypt credentials and data in transit | The client must be pointed to the active /wp-content/themes/ directory |
| SFTP | The host supports SSH-based file transfer | Encrypts the password and other transferred data in transit | The SSH/SFTP path still has to match the active WordPress root |
FTP or SFTP access gives you a way to place the files, but it does not automatically repair an ownership mismatch. If the web-server process still cannot read or update the uploaded theme, ask the host to align ownership and group settings with its documented execution model.
How to locate the correct target directory
Path errors are easy to miss because an FTP client can show a perfectly normal directory tree. Use these checks before uploading:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open the directory associated with the domain or site in your hosting panel.
- Find the WordPress files and folders for that installation, including
wp-content. - Open
wp-content, thenthemes. This confirms that you are not in a generic account folder or a different application. - Compare the path shown by the file manager or FTP client with the path your host identifies as the site’s document root.
- If more than one installation looks plausible, ask the host which one serves the domain before transferring anything.
A path that is correct for one host may be wrong on another. WordPress can be installed directly in a web root, in a subdirectory, or alongside other sites, so there is no universal absolute path beyond the destination relative to the active installation: /wp-content/themes/.
Diagnose the most common symptoms
WordPress asks for FTP credentials during theme installation
This indicates that direct filesystem writes are unavailable or that WordPress expects a transport method because the account that would write files does not match the account that owns them. Enter the host-provided FTP or SSH details, including the correct path. If the form rejects valid details, have the host verify the server name, port, authentication method, and ownership model.
Best Value
“Installation failed: Could not create directory”
WordPress reached the point where it needed to create a directory but could not write to the target location. Check that you are in the active installation and that wp-content is writable by the server process. A wrong path, an owner/group mismatch, or a host policy that blocks direct writes can all produce this result.
The upload completes but the theme is missing from Appearance > Themes
Verify that the extracted theme folder is directly inside /wp-content/themes/ and that you uploaded the complete folder. Then confirm that the FTP or file-manager connection was made to the live installation rather than a staging or unrelated directory. If the path is correct, ask the host to check whether the web server can read the uploaded files.

The FTP login works, but WordPress still cannot install
Authentication and filesystem authorization are separate. A client may let you log in while the web-server process lacks permission to create or modify files. Check ownership and write access, then confirm that WordPress’s configured base and content directories match the location you inspected. Host support is usually required when those values are controlled outside WordPress.
FTP versus SFTP for this repair
Use SFTP when the host offers it and provides the necessary SSH details. The practical advantage is encryption of the password and transferred data while they move between your computer and the website. This matters whenever you are sending credentials or theme files over a network you do not fully control.
FTP can still be the method your host provides, but treat the connection details as sensitive and use the host’s documented server and port. Do not substitute an SFTP port or SSH username unless the provider explicitly says those values apply. Whichever method you choose, verify the remote path before uploading.
When to involve hosting support
Contact the host rather than repeatedly changing settings when:
- You cannot determine which directory serves the domain.
- The host has multiple WordPress installations under one account.
- You have valid credentials but cannot create a directory in
wp-content. - The owner or group of the files does not match the host’s PHP execution model.
- You do not know whether FTP, SFTP, or a hosting file manager is enabled.
- You are considering changes to
FS_METHOD,FTP_BASE, orFTP_CONTENT_DIRwithout a confirmed path.
Give support the exact error text, the domain or installation you are repairing, the directory you believe is the WordPress root, and the transfer method you attempted. Ask them to confirm the correct owner, group, writable directories, host name, port, and path. This lets them fix the server-side cause instead of only resetting a password.
Security checks after the theme is installed
- Use a theme ZIP from the WordPress Theme Directory or a vendor you trust.
- Prefer SFTP when it is available.
- Remove any temporary local copies of credentials from shared computers.
- Do not make every site file world-writable to silence an installer error.
- Confirm that the theme is visible in Appearance > Themes before activating it.
- If you uploaded to the wrong installation, remove that copy through the same file-management method and verify the live site’s path before trying again.
WordPress’s documented FTP installation process requires an FTP client and extracted theme files. The manual route is therefore a supported recovery path when the dashboard cannot write, provided the folder is placed in the active site’s /wp-content/themes/ directory.
Quick Recap
Final checklist
- Use a complete theme ZIP from the WordPress Theme Directory or its vendor.
- Confirm which WordPress installation serves the site.
- Locate that installation’s
/wp-content/themes/directory. - Check that ownership and write access match the host’s PHP execution model.
- Enter the exact FTP or SSH username, password, host, port, and path supplied by the host.
- Choose SFTP when the host supports it.
- If dashboard installation fails, extract the ZIP and upload the theme folder manually.
- Activate it from Appearance > Themes.
- Ask the host to repair ownership or confirm filesystem settings when the error persists.
