If the Startup tab seems to be missing in Windows 11 Task Manager, look for Startup apps—that is Microsoft’s current label for the page. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, or right-click Start and select Task Manager, then choose Startup apps. If the page is genuinely unavailable, use Start > Settings > Apps > Startup to manage listed apps. Microsoft does not document one universal cause or fix for an absent Task Manager page.
Find the page under its current name
In current Windows guidance, Task Manager’s page is called Startup apps, not simply “Startup.” Open Task Manager using either method:

- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Right-click Start and choose Task Manager.
Select Startup apps in Task Manager. If you were searching for an item named “Startup,” the changed label may explain why it looked missing. Microsoft describes Task Manager’s purpose and opening methods in its System configuration tools in Windows guide.

Use Settings if Task Manager’s page is unavailable
Go to Start > Settings > Apps > Startup. This provides on/off controls for apps registered to run when you sign in: turning an app on allows its automatic launch, while turning it off prevents that launch. Microsoft says Settings and Task Manager show the same registered startup-app list, though Task Manager also presents startup-impact information. See Microsoft’s Configure Startup applications in Windows.

This is a workaround for managing listed apps, not a repair for Task Manager itself. Microsoft’s public instructions do not establish why the entire page is absent on a particular PC or provide a universal restoration procedure. The symptom alone does not show that Windows is corrupted or that a specific policy is responsible.
If a particular app is missing from both lists
Some apps launch from shortcuts in a Startup folder rather than appearing in the Settings and Task Manager lists. Microsoft documents these folder locations:

Open File Explorer, enter the relevant command in its address bar, and press Enter. Adding or removing an app shortcut in the folder changes whether that shortcut launches at sign-in for the applicable user scope. These folders address an individual app missing from the lists; they do not restore an absent Task Manager page.

For apps shown in Task Manager, select an entry and choose Enable or Disable. Task Manager also assigns an impact label. Microsoft defines the labels as follows; these are Microsoft’s UI classification thresholds, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee of a particular boot-time improvement.

| Label | Microsoft’s stated definition |
|---|---|
| None | No startup-impact value is stated in the cited Microsoft guidance. |
| Not Measured | Impact has not been measured. |
| Low | CPU use under 300 milliseconds and disk use under 292 KB. |
| Medium | CPU use under one second but over 300 milliseconds, or disk use under 3 MB but over 292 KB. |
| High | CPU use over one second or disk use over 3 MB. |
The labels help compare the listed apps’ startup resource use; they do not identify why a page is missing. Microsoft’s definitions appear in its startup-applications guide.

Windows has registry locations that can configure startup behavior, but Microsoft warns that registry changes can have unintended consequences and advises caution and a backup. Its guidance does not prescribe registry edits to bring back a missing Task Manager page. A Microsoft Q&A thread contains user-reported registry changes, but those reports do not establish a dependable cause or a remedy that applies to other Windows devices. Treat the thread as anecdotal, not as Microsoft Support’s repair instructions: Startup App in menu settings is missing in Windows 11.

When a clean boot may help—and when it will not
If the missing page is part of a broader problem with startup behavior or app conflicts, Microsoft’s clean-boot process can help isolate background software conflicts. It uses System Configuration and Task Manager’s Startup apps page, so it assumes that page is accessible; it is not a direct fix for an absent page. Microsoft also cautions that network policy may block some steps and that advanced boot changes should be made only with Microsoft support guidance. Follow the documented procedure in How to perform a clean boot in Windows.
