Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFirst decide whether you want to delete the item from both your PC and OneDrive, remove only its local copy, or keep a local copy while removing it from the cloud. Deleting inside a synced OneDrive folder can delete the online copy too. The right fix depends on that goal—and, for work or school accounts, on your permissions and organization’s retention rules.
Choose what should happen to the file
| Your goal | What to do | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Delete it from the PC and OneDrive | Delete it from the synced OneDrive folder in File Explorer, or delete it on the OneDrive website. | Changes in the synced folder can sync to the website and vice versa. Deleting a shared item can also make it unavailable to others. See Microsoft’s OneDrive sync guidance and deletion instructions. |
| Free space on the PC but keep the cloud file | Use Files On-Demand or stop syncing the folder with selective sync. | These options can remove local disk use without deleting the cloud content. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for choosing which OneDrive folders to sync. |
| Keep the file on the PC but remove it from OneDrive | Move it outside the OneDrive folder before deleting the cloud copy. | A file left in the synced folder is subject to syncing; moving it out preserves a local copy outside that sync location. |
Try deleting the item in File Explorer and on the web
- In File Explorer, open the OneDrive folder for the account that contains the item.
- Select the file or folder and press Delete. If you want the cloud copy removed as well, allow OneDrive to sync the change.
- If the deletion fails, sign in to OneDrive on the web with the same account and try deleting the item there.
- To delete a folder on the web, go to its parent folder and select the folder itself. Selecting items inside it may delete only its contents.
If the website does not show a Delete control for a selected item, Microsoft says you may not have permission to delete it. Repeated attempts from File Explorer are unlikely to solve an ownership or access restriction; check with the file owner or, for a work or school account, your administrator. See Microsoft’s OneDrive deletion guidance.

Check whether the file is open or access is restricted
Close apps that may be using the file
If an application has the file open, save any changes and close the application. Microsoft notes that a file used by another application may not sync while it is open. Then give OneDrive a chance to sync and retry the action. This applies to certain sync problems; it is not a guaranteed fix for every deletion error. See Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps for files that can’t be synced.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

If an error points to access, right-click the file in File Explorer, choose Properties, and open the Security tab. Check whether your account has appropriate read and write permissions. If you cannot change permissions on a work or school file, ask its owner or your administrator rather than trying to override organization controls. Microsoft also lists permission-related errors in its OneDrive error-code guide.

For work or school accounts, check organization controls
Work and school OneDrive accounts may be subject to administrator-managed permissions or retention rules. In some cases, a retention policy requires a folder to be emptied before the folder itself can be deleted. If online deletion is unavailable or a policy prevents it, contact the folder owner or administrator; a local retry cannot remove a control applied by the organization.

OneDrive has file-name and path restrictions that can interfere with handling or syncing an item, but the problem cannot be identified from the title alone. Note the exact error and compare the name or path with Microsoft’s OneDrive and SharePoint restrictions and limitations.

- If deletion is blocked only in File Explorer, check whether OneDrive has synced, whether the file is open, and whether Windows permissions allow the action.
- If deletion is blocked on the website too, check whether the item is shared, whether you have permission, and—on a work or school account—whether an organization policy applies.
- If neither route explains the issue, note the exact error, whether the account is personal or work/school, and whether the block occurs in File Explorer, on the web, or both. Those details help the owner or administrator identify the restriction.
