If you can’t open a shared Freeform board, send an invitation, or edit with other people, check the device and iCloud requirements first. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance calls for a supported, updated device and Freeform enabled in iCloud; every participant also needs to be online, signed in to an Apple Account, and using two-factor authentication. Then check the invitation method and the board’s access settings.
First, identify where collaboration is failing
The right check depends on what happens when you try to collaborate. A link that will not open points first to device, software, or iCloud setup. An invitation that cannot be sent or accepted may involve account or invitation-channel requirements. If someone can open the board but cannot make changes, inspect the board’s permissions.

- The board link will not open: check the supported software version and Freeform’s iCloud setting.
- An invite cannot be sent or accepted: confirm participant setup and, if using Messages, iMessage.
- A participant cannot edit: ask the owner to review that person’s access and permissions.
Check device support and update iPhone or iPad
Apple’s shared-board link troubleshooting page lists iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2, macOS Ventura 13, or visionOS 1 or later for shared-board links. These are the requirements Apple gives for shared boards; other kinds of links can have different minimum versions.

On iPhone or iPad, install any available iOS or iPadOS update, then try the shared link again. Apple recommends updating the operating system if a shared-board link still will not open. If your device is below the shared-board minimum, update it to a supported version if one is available for your model.

Turn on Freeform in iCloud
Freeform boards are stored and updated through iCloud. Apple says a device that is not signed in to an Apple Account, or has Freeform turned off in iCloud, cannot access its iCloud boards.
- Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
- Tap your name at the top of Settings.
- Tap iCloud.
- Tap See All or Show All beside the apps using iCloud. The label can vary by software version.
- Turn on Freeform.
Have each collaborator check this setting on their own device as well. A shared board reflects the latest changes when participants are online and signed in.

Confirm every participant meets Apple’s collaboration requirements
Apple says all participants need to be online, signed in to their Apple Account, have Freeform enabled in iCloud, and have two-factor authentication set up to use collaboration features fully. Check each person’s setup, not only the board owner’s.

Apple’s iPhone collaboration guide also says people invited to view or edit a shared board must be signed in to an Apple Account and use iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2, or macOS 13.1 or later. Ask anyone who cannot join to confirm their device and software meet those requirements.

Check the invitation method
If the owner is inviting people through Messages, iMessage must be turned on for both the sender and invitees. This requirement applies to the Messages route; Apple does not identify iMessage as a general requirement for invitations sent another way.
The board owner can share using methods such as Messages or Mail. If a Messages invitation is not working, check iMessage on both ends or try another available sharing method.

Review the board’s access and editing permissions
If a person can open the board but cannot edit, the owner should check the board’s current sharing settings. Open the board’s sharing controls, then choose Collaborate and Manage Shared Board to review participants and adjust permissions. To invite another person, choose Share With More People.

If the documented checks do not solve it
If every participant meets Apple’s listed requirements, Freeform is enabled in iCloud, the invitation method is set up correctly, and the board permissions are right, the cited Apple guidance does not establish a universal next fix or a single cause.
