If you can’t see or change a file extension on an iPhone or iPad, open the file’s folder in Files, tap the More menu, choose View Options, and turn on Show All Filename Extensions. Then touch and hold the file and tap Rename. Changing the suffix only changes the filename; it does not convert the file’s contents.
Show the extension, then rename the file

Turn on Show All Filename Extensions. A suffix such as

Touch and hold the file, then tap Rename. Edit the filename; to change the extension, deliberately edit the text after the final period. Keep an untouched copy if the file matters. Apple documents the Rename command in its iPhone guide to organizing files and folders.
If you only want to identify a file, touch and hold it and choose Get Info. The extension or file type is shown there. The extension visibility guide

Renaming is not converting
Changing a suffix—for example, from .mkv to .mp4—does not rewrite the file’s contents into another format. The renamed file may still contain its original format and may not open as expected. If you need a genuinely different format, use a format-aware app or an export option that creates a converted copy.
Export a supported document from Files
For some documents, open the item in Files, tap its title, and choose Export to save a copy in another format. This is a conversion workflow, not a filename change. If View Options or Rename is missing
Available actions can depend on the selected item, so a command may not appear for every file or location. Apple’s guide to organizing files
Check a third-party cloud location
If the file is stored in a third-party cloud service, confirm that the provider’s app is installed and its location enabled in Files. Go to Browse > More > Edit and enable the location if it is listed. Apple gives Google Drive, Box, Dropbox, and Microsoft OneDrive as examples; if a provider’s location is missing, check with that provider. Do you need a separate app or accessory?
No physical product is needed to reveal or rename an extension. The built-in Files controls handle those tasks. Shortcuts can support related file workflows with actions such as Save File and Open In, but it is not required for this fix. Apple Shortcuts guide
