Check the model name—usually printed on the front or top of the printer, or shown in its settings—then follow the matching Canon manual. Do not apply one series’ button sequence to another.
What does Canon printer error code 5200 mean?
Canon’s manuals describe the cause as “Printer error has occurred.” That identifies 5200 as a printer error, but does not establish one universal cause for every Canon model. Canon gives different recovery steps for different series, so the model determines what to try next.

First, identify your printer model
Find the full model name on the printer’s front or top panel, or in its settings. Then open the Canon manual for that exact model and follow its instructions in order. The procedures below are examples from Canon manuals, not a complete list of every series that may display 5200.
Fixes documented for specific Canon models
Canon G3030 series
- Check the remaining ink and refill if needed.
- Turn the printer off and unplug it.
- Reconnect the power cable and turn the printer on.
- Run the printer’s “Replace Ink in Print Head” procedure.
Canon warns that “Changing the order or omitting steps may cause other problems.” Follow the G3030 series manual for the exact procedure. If 5200 returns after these steps, Canon says replacing the printheads may resolve it. If it returns after printhead replacement, ask a Canon service center for repair. Do not tilt the printer during transport; ink may leak.

Canon G500 and G2010 series
- Check the ink and refill if necessary.
- Turn the printer off and unplug it, then reconnect it and turn it on.
- Run printhead Cleaning.
- Run Ink Flush.
Canon says Deep Cleaning is not required in these instructions. The procedures are in the G500 series manual and G2010 series manual. If the code recurs, Canon lists printhead replacement as a possible next step; if it returns after replacement, contact a Canon service center. Avoid tilting the printer while moving it.
Canon TS5500 series
- Turn the printer off and unplug it.
- Reconnect it and restart the printer.
- If 5200 remains, contact a Canon service center.
See Canon’s TS5500 series instructions.
Canon TR4500 series
- Turn the printer off and unplug it.
- Reconnect it and restart the printer.
- If the code remains, contact Canon service.
See the TR4500 series manual. Its instructions warn that unplugging the printer deletes faxes stored in its memory.

Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-541
- Turn the printer off and unplug it.
- Wait a moment, then reconnect it and restart.
- If 5200 returns, record the detailed EC code shown on the display and contact Canon customer service.
The 5200 page lists EC21-2F76, EC21-2F77, and EC21-2F78. Find the procedure in Canon’s PRO-541 manual.

Printhead replacement is a possible remedy in Canon’s cited G3030, G500, and G2010 instructions—not a universal fix for all printers showing 5200. Confirm your exact model and compatible part before purchasing a replacement. For the cited TS5500, TR4500, and PRO-541 instructions, Canon instead directs users to service if restarting does not resolve the error or it returns. For any model, use its own manual to determine the appropriate next step.
