If a computer does not recognize your Canon PowerShot, first check the exact camera model and its connection instructions. PowerShot cable, software, and transfer steps vary. Try the model-appropriate USB connection, check Canon’s current support page for software guidance, then use a compatible card reader to retrieve photos if direct transfer still fails.
1. Check the PowerShot model and USB connection
Find the complete model name on the camera or its label, then open the manual and support page for that specific model. Don’t assume a cable that fits one PowerShot will work with another, or that every model uses the same connection steps.

With the camera powered and set up as its manual specifies, reconnect the cable at both ends. Check that the camera-side plug is fully seated and that the cable is the correct interface cable for the model. If possible, check the computer’s USB port with another device to distinguish a port problem from a camera connection problem.

Canon’s PowerShot S95 import instructions describe connecting the camera’s digital terminal to a Mac’s USB port with the supplied interface cable. Canon notes that button locations, screen indications, and settings can differ by model. That article covers Mac OS X 10.6 and CameraWindow 8.3, so it is a model- and software-specific example, not a current universal procedure.

Cable details also vary: Canon’s PowerShot A2300 CameraWindow instructions identify an IFC-400PCU as separately sold in the circumstance described there. Verify the correct cable for your own model before ordering or substituting one.
2. Check the software for your model and computer
Once the physical connection is secure, check the Canon support page for your exact PowerShot model and your computer’s operating system. Follow only the software and steps Canon lists for that combination. If the camera appears in the computer but an import application does not, check the model’s instructions for how to import images rather than assuming the camera has failed.

CameraWindow appears in Canon’s legacy examples: version 8.3 for the S95 on Mac OS X 10.6, and versions 8.7–8.10 in an A2300 example. Those pages do not establish compatibility with every PowerShot or modern Windows and macOS releases. EOS Utility instructions for Canon EOS DSLRs likewise do not show that EOS Utility is the right fix for a PowerShot.
3. Transfer photos with a card reader
If direct USB transfer still does not work and your PowerShot has a removable memory card, a compatible card reader or the computer’s built-in card slot may let you import the files without connecting the camera. Canon mentions these options in camera recognition guidance for an EOS model. That guidance is not a PowerShot-specific guarantee, so check your camera’s manual and confirm that the reader accepts the card type and fits an available computer port.

- Turn off the camera and remove its memory card according to the manual.
- Insert the card into a compatible card slot or reader connected to the computer.
- Open the card in the computer’s file manager and copy the photos to a folder on the computer before safely ejecting the card.
Reading the card can recover access to the photos, but it does not establish that the camera’s USB connection has been repaired.

After checking the model-specific cable and transfer guidance, contact Canon support for that model or ask about authorized service in your region. A connection failure alone does not establish that the camera has a hardware fault. A Wi-Fi or wireless setting can affect wired connection steps on some cameras, but Canon’s cited example concerns a Rebel T6; consult your PowerShot manual rather than applying that DSLR setting as a general fix.
