Cannot Connect AirPods to Windows? Fix Pairing, Audio, and Disconnects

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AirPods can connect to Windows 10 and Windows 11 as ordinary Bluetooth headphones. The right fix depends on the symptom: if they do not appear, check pairing mode and Bluetooth discovery; if Windows says they are connected but you hear nothing, choose them as the audio output. For a clean retry, charge the AirPods, temporarily disconnect nearby Apple devices, remove the old AirPods entry in Windows, put the correct model into pairing mode, then add it again under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Bluetooth.

Start with the symptom

Pairing, connecting, and hearing audio are separate steps. Pairing saves the AirPods in Windows; connecting establishes the Bluetooth link; choosing an output device routes sound; microphone use may switch to a hands-free call profile.

What happens Where to investigate
Bluetooth toggle is missing PC Bluetooth hardware, Airplane mode, adapter status, or driver
AirPods never appear Pairing mode, a competing connection to another device, discovery settings, or the PC driver
AirPods appear but pairing fails Stale Windows entry, battery, driver, or interference
Windows says connected, but there is no sound Windows output selection, app volume routing, or a missing audio endpoint
Music works but calls sound poor Bluetooth hands-free microphone mode or the meeting app’s device choices
AirPods connect and then drop Battery, another device reconnecting, driver, range, interference, or adapter stability
Only one earbud works Charging/contact, pairing state, Windows balance, or earbud hardware

To separate an AirPods problem from a PC problem, test the AirPods with a phone or tablet, another Bluetooth device with the PC, and the AirPods with another computer. If other Bluetooth devices also fail on the PC, focus on its adapter or Windows rather than the AirPods.

Pair AirPods with Windows 11

  1. Charge both AirPods and the case. Keep the open case near the PC. Low battery can prevent pairing or make a connection drop, according to Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance.
  2. Temporarily turn off Bluetooth on nearby iPhones, iPads, or Macs, or disconnect the AirPods from them. This helps rule out another device reconnecting during setup; it is a troubleshooting step, not a universal pairing requirement.
  3. Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices and turn Bluetooth on. Make sure Airplane mode is off.
  4. Put your AirPods model into pairing mode using the instructions below.
  5. Select Add device > Bluetooth, choose the AirPods when they appear, and wait for Windows to report that they are connected. See Microsoft’s Windows pairing instructions.

Use the right pairing control for your model

  • AirPods 1, 2, or 3; AirPods Pro 1 or 2: Put both earbuds in the case and open the lid. Hold the setup button on the back for about five seconds, until the status light flashes white.
  • AirPods 4 or AirPods Pro 3: Put the earbuds in the case and open the lid. Double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white. These models use front-case taps rather than the older rear-button procedure.
  • AirPods Max: Hold the listening-mode button for about five seconds, until the status light flashes white.

Apple documents model-specific pairing controls in its AirPods pairing guide. Older rear-button instructions do not apply to every current case.

If AirPods do not appear in the device list

  1. Re-enter pairing mode and check that the status light flashes white. Close and reopen the case before trying again.
  2. Move the case close to the PC, and temporarily disconnect nearby devices that may already be using the AirPods.
  3. In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices. Find Bluetooth devices discovery and change it from Default to Advanced, then return to Add device. Microsoft says Default shows common devices, while Advanced shows all device types; labels may differ by Windows build or language. See Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guide.
  4. Turn Bluetooth off, wait 10 seconds, turn it on again, and retry. Restart Windows if the AirPods remain missing.

If Bluetooth itself is absent, skip to the Bluetooth hardware checks; an AirPods reset will not restore a missing PC adapter.

If AirPods appear but will not connect

Remove the saved Windows record and pair afresh. Microsoft recommends removing and re-adding a Bluetooth device that is listed but will not connect.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
  2. Find the AirPods, select the … menu, and choose Remove device.
  3. Turn Bluetooth off and on again, then put the AirPods back into pairing mode.
  4. Select Add device > Bluetooth and pair them again.

Remove stale or duplicate AirPods entries if Windows has accumulated them, but do not remove unrelated Bluetooth devices without a reason. If a fresh pairing still fails, continue with the driver checks and, later, the model-specific reset instructions.

If Windows connects but there is no sound

A Bluetooth connection does not guarantee that Windows selected the AirPods for playback. Choose them explicitly as the output:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Select the Sound icon on the taskbar and open the output-device list, then select the AirPods.
  2. Or open Start > Settings > System > Sound and choose the AirPods under Output. Check that they are not muted or disabled.
  3. Open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer and check that the affected app is routed to the AirPods and has its own volume turned up.
  4. If the AirPods do not appear as a playback endpoint, open More sound settings and inspect the Playback tab for a disabled device. Remove and re-pair the AirPods if the endpoint is missing.

Windows may keep sending sound to a monitor or another output, so temporarily disconnecting external HDMI audio can help identify a routing conflict. Microsoft’s Bluetooth-connected-but-no-sound guide also lists 2-channel, 16-bit, 48,000 Hz as an available format to try in Advanced sound properties when the device is connected. It is a troubleshooting option, not a universal requirement.

If calls sound worse than music

When a meeting app uses the AirPods microphone, Windows may switch from higher-quality stereo playback to a hands-free headset mode. Audio can sound noticeably worse; the precise behavior depends on the AirPods model, Windows version, adapter, drivers, and app.

  • Intuitive Controls – Easily adjust volume with built-in buttons, giving you full control of your audio.
  • In the meeting app, select AirPods for speakers and the PC’s built-in microphone, webcam microphone, or a separate USB microphone for input.
  • If opening a call app causes poor playback or disconnects, close it and test music playback alone. That helps isolate microphone-profile behavior from a general Bluetooth fault.
  • Do not assume a particular Hands-Free Telephony control will be available: its location and availability vary with the device and driver.

AirPods provide basic Bluetooth audio on Windows, not a guarantee of Apple-specific features such as automatic switching, Siri integration, or Find My behavior. Microsoft and Apple document standard Bluetooth pairing, but those Apple ecosystem conveniences are not assured on Windows.

Update Windows Bluetooth troubleshooting and drivers

Run the Windows troubleshooter

On Windows 11, start with the Bluetooth troubleshooter in the Get Help app, as Microsoft recommends. Pairing mode, battery, range, Bluetooth configuration, drivers, updates, and device faults are among the possible causes it addresses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Update the PC’s Bluetooth driver

  1. Search Windows for Device Manager and open it.
  2. Expand Bluetooth. The adapter may be identified by names such as Intel, Realtek, Qualcomm, Bluetooth, or Radio.
  3. Right-click the adapter and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
  4. Restart if prompted. If Windows finds no newer driver, get the Bluetooth driver from your PC, laptop, or motherboard manufacturer’s support site rather than an unverified driver-download or driver-updater service.

If the fault began immediately after a driver update, check for a newer Windows or manufacturer driver. Use Roll Back Driver in Device Manager only if the timing points clearly to that update. Avoid registry edits, unsigned drivers, and deleting arbitrary Bluetooth files as routine fixes. Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance covers adapter and driver checks.

If Bluetooth is missing or no Bluetooth device works

  1. Confirm the PC has Bluetooth hardware. Open Device Manager > Bluetooth and look for an adapter; it may be disabled or its driver may be missing.
  2. Check that Airplane mode is off, and check for a physical wireless switch if the PC has one.
  3. Install the Bluetooth driver provided by the PC or motherboard manufacturer and restart.
  4. Test another Bluetooth mouse, speaker, or headset. If none connects, troubleshoot the PC adapter before blaming the AirPods.
  5. If a desktop lacks Bluetooth or its internal adapter is defective, a USB Bluetooth adapter can add it. Microsoft describes this option in its pairing guidance.

An adapter is not a guaranteed AirPods fix: it cannot repair faulty earbuds or a case, correct audio routing, or solve an app-specific problem. On desktops, antenna placement, the metal chassis, nearby USB 3 devices, and interference can affect radio performance; testing another USB port or moving an adapter with an extension may help, but no particular port is guaranteed to work.

Reset the AirPods only after a clean re-pair fails

Pairing mode makes AirPods discoverable; resetting clears their configuration. First charge them and remove the Windows entry. Apple notes that the reset procedure differs by model.

AirPods 1, 2, or 3; AirPods Pro 1 or 2

  1. Put the AirPods in the case, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds.
  2. If they are paired to an iPhone or iPad, forget them there under Settings > Bluetooth.
  3. Open the lid. Hold the setup button on the back for about 15 seconds, until the light flashes amber and then white.
  4. Pair them with Windows again.

AirPods 4 or AirPods Pro 3

  1. Put the AirPods in the case, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds.
  2. Open the lid. Double-tap the front of the case while the light is on.
  3. Double-tap again when the light flashes white. When it flashes faster, double-tap a third time.
  4. Wait for the light to flash amber and then white, then pair again.

For current model-specific reset details, follow Apple’s reset instructions.

Use these tests to find the failing component

  • AirPods with a phone or tablet: If they fail there too, suspect the AirPods, case, battery, or reset state.
  • Another Bluetooth device with the PC: If it also fails, focus on Windows, the adapter, or the driver.
  • AirPods with another computer: If they work there, focus on the original PC’s adapter, discovery settings, driver, or stored Windows record.

If only one earbud works, put both back in the case, confirm both charge, reset and re-pair, then test each earbud independently. Also check Windows sound balance and mono/stereo settings. If one earbud still fails with multiple devices after a reset, hardware is more likely than Windows.

Windows 10 and when to stop troubleshooting

Windows 10 uses different menus: go to Start > Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices, select the AirPods, choose Remove device, then use Add Bluetooth or other device to pair again. Microsoft ended free Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; the main steps above are for Windows 11.

Contact Apple or the PC maker, or consider repair or replacement, when AirPods fail on multiple devices after a reset, an earbud will not charge, or the case cannot enter pairing mode. Contact the PC maker if its Bluetooth adapter still cannot connect to any device after hardware and driver checks. On a work-managed PC, an administrator may need to change Bluetooth settings.
