Cancelling Netflix takes two actions in your account: choose Cancel, then select Finish Cancellation. Signing out or deleting the app does neither. Most members keep access until the end of the billing period they have already paid for, so the cancellation date and the access date are rarely the same day.
Whether Netflix is worth keeping is a question about your viewing and your bill, and the help pages cannot answer it for you. The sections below set out the cancellation mechanics first, then a way to test the decision against your own household.

Test the decision against your own use first
Before you cancel, put three numbers next to each other: the hours your household actually spends on Netflix in a typical month, the titles you would miss if they disappeared, and the monthly charge on your own account. The monthly charge is the one most readers have never looked at closely, because it can include taxes, a billing partner’s fee structure, or an add-on package.
- Frequency: how many evenings a week someone in the household starts a Netflix title, and how many of those sessions you would replace with something else.
- Specific titles: list the shows or films you are currently watching or planning to watch. Check whether they are still on Netflix in your country, since catalogues differ by region and change over time.
- Actual cost: the amount on your most recent statement or in Payment History, not the headline price. Netflix says plan prices and features vary by country, and third-party packages can change both eligibility and price.
- Other users: whether a family member, a flatmate or someone outside your home relies on the account. Cancelling affects them too, and they may be the one who restarts it.
- Your real options: cancel, pause if your account offers it, or move to a cheaper plan. Only the first option ends the charge outright.
For reference, the US-dollar prices on Netflix’s Plans and Pricing page when it was checked on 2026-10-07 were $8.99 a month for Standard with ads, $19.99 for Standard and $26.99 for Premium. Taxes may apply, and your own prices may be different. Treat these as a snapshot of one country on one date, and use your account’s figures for the decision.

How to cancel Netflix
- Sign in to your Netflix account.
- Open Manage your membership.
- Select Cancel.
- Select Finish Cancellation. The cancellation is not complete until this step is done.
- Look for the cancellation confirmation email. Keep it until you have seen your final charge or your access end date.
- Open Payment History to check when the account will close.
If the account does not show a Cancel option, the subscription is probably billed by a partner. The next section covers that case.
When the account does not show a cancellation option
Netflix’s help instructions say that if your account has no cancellation option, you should look in the Membership section for instructions from your payment partner. The partner, not Netflix, may need to process the cancellation.

Apple billing
If you subscribed through Apple, you may need to cancel through Apple. Review your subscription settings in Apple’s account system, and read Netflix’s help article “Netflix Billing through Apple” for the Apple billing route. That article also notes a renewal cutoff: a cancellation made too close to the renewal date may not stop the next charge, so cancel before the renewal window opens.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOther billing partners
For any other partner, follow the cancellation instructions shown in your Membership section. If that section gives no route, contact the partner directly and ask for written confirmation of the cancellation and the final billing date.

Deleting the app does not cancel your account
The Netflix Help Center’s “How to cancel Netflix” page states: “Signing out of your account or deleting the Netflix app doesn’t cancel your account.” Removing the app from your phone or tablet stops nothing. If you have left the app and the charges continue, the membership is still active.
When your access actually ends
Cancelling usually does not end access immediately. Netflix says members can keep using the service until the end of the current billing period. There are two exceptions:

- Account on hold: an account that is on hold closes immediately when cancelled.
- Gift-card or promotional balance: a remaining balance may cover some service after you cancel, so access can run past the billing period in that case.
To find the exact date, use Payment History, as described in the steps above. Netflix’s billing-date guidance warns that a date may shift by a day because of time zones, and that third-party billing dates can differ from the date shown in your Netflix account. If you are close to a renewal, plan for a one-day margin.
Can you come back?
Cancellation is generally reversible. Netflix says that several account details, recommendations, ratings, viewing activity and game history are kept for 24 months after an account closes. This is a company retention policy, not an independently measured figure, and it is stated on the Netflix Help Center page current when this was written.

Restarting is covered in Netflix’s “How to restart your Netflix membership” guide, which says profiles and My List may still be available when you return. Do not assume they will be. Availability depends on how long the account has been closed and on the retention rules above.
Pause instead of cancelling
Netflix’s cancellation page describes a one-month pause for some accounts. Pausing has limits:
- It is unavailable on the Basic plan and for some payment methods.
- While paused, members cannot stream or download.
- The page describes a maximum total pause of three months in the relevant circumstances.
Eligibility can change, so check whether your own account shows the option before you plan around it.
Stop someone else from restarting the account
If other people use the account and you want to prevent a restart, Netflix recommends two steps: change the password, then select sign out of all devices. Do this before you cancel if you expect someone may try to restart the account, because a restart can be done by anyone who can sign in.
Check the result
After the closing date, check your bank or card statement for any further Netflix charge. If one appears after the date Payment History shows, contact Netflix or your billing partner with the confirmation email and the statement line.
