Usually, you do not need to convert a video just because it is encoded in HEVC (H.265). OBS can use video files as media sources, and YouTube’s current guidance supports HEVC for RTMP/RTMPS and HLS live streams. The input file’s codec and OBS’s outgoing stream encoder are separate choices, though: confirm that the file plays in your OBS build and that the selected encoder and YouTube ingestion protocol work together before going live.
Why an HEVC file does not determine your stream codec
When you add a recording to OBS, it is an input media source. OBS separately configures the encoder used for its outgoing stream. An HEVC source therefore does not, by itself, show that OBS sends the file’s compressed HEVC bitstream unchanged. The OBS documentation describes media sources and output encoder selection separately; it does not document HEVC passthrough. Treat the outgoing encoder settings—not just the file extension or source codec—as the settings YouTube must accept.

OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, and MKV among the containers supported by Media Source, and its formats guide lists HEVC in MP4, MOV, MKV, and TS. Container support is not a guarantee that every file will play: profiles, bit depth, audio tracks, or file damage can still cause problems. See OBS Media Sources and the OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide.

RTMP or RTMPS
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS. That establishes HEVC as a supported outgoing codec option in YouTube’s guidance, not a guarantee that every OBS version, encoder device, stream key, or file will work without configuration. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings and use the protocol and encoder specified for your stream.

HLS
YouTube also documents HEVC over HLS and lists OBS as an HLS-capable encoder. HLS has additional delivery requirements: TS segments must be 1–4 seconds, the rolling playlist can have no more than five outstanding segments, requests use HTTPS POST/PUT, and byte ranges are not supported. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. Use the current YouTube HLS setup instructions if choosing this route; do not assume an RTMP configuration is interchangeable with HLS.
Set OBS output for the stream you intend to send
- Test a representative section of the file. In OBS, add the video as a Media Source and confirm both picture and audio play. Test a segment that includes any unusual frame rate, audio track, or visual treatment in the full recording.
- Check source decoding if playback fails. OBS Media Source offers hardware decoding for certain file types when the GPU has a suitable decoder. It is optional, not a universal requirement. Check the OBS log and source properties before deciding the file needs conversion.
- Select the actual destination and ingestion protocol. Confirm whether the YouTube stream is configured for RTMP/RTMPS or HLS, and follow the matching YouTube and OBS procedure. For HLS, account for the segment and playlist requirements and the higher latency.
- Configure the outgoing encoder and stream parameters. Choose an encoder and codec supported for that protocol, then set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval according to YouTube’s current guidance. YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and codec-specific bitrate ranges. Do not use the bitrate recommendation for one codec as if it applied to another.
- Run a private or otherwise low-risk test before an event. Check YouTube’s stream health and confirm audio, motion, and playback remain stable at the intended resolution and frame rate. A file that decodes correctly is not proof that the outgoing encoder or upload path is stable.
For a concrete example of why the codec column matters, YouTube’s encoder guidance checked in 2026 recommends 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60. Those are YouTube recommendations for the stated codec, resolution, and frame rate—not universal minimums or settings for every stream.

HDR requires a separate check
Do not apply SDR assumptions to an HDR live stream. YouTube says HDR Live supports HEVC and requires 10-bit video with compatible BT.2020 color primaries and matrix, plus PQ or HLG transfer characteristics. Its OBS HDR instructions say the RTMPS procedure requires OBS 30.1 or later and a hardware HEVC encoder; consult the current instructions for protocol-specific setup and compatibility before configuring HDR. See YouTube HDR live streaming guidance.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallWhen converting is the practical fix
Convert only when you have identified a real incompatibility: the installed OBS build cannot decode or play the file reliably, the available outgoing encoder cannot produce a supported combination for the selected YouTube protocol, or your workflow specifically requires a different stream format. Conversion to a compatible codec and container can then be a workaround.

There is no single safe conversion preset for every HEVC file. The right output depends on source resolution, frame rate, SDR or HDR color, audio tracks, and the stream you need to deliver. Preserve those properties deliberately; converting an HDR source to an SDR preset, for example, can change its appearance. If the source plays and OBS can encode a supported outgoing stream, conversion solely to replace the HEVC label is unnecessary.
Fix common HEVC-to-YouTube problems
- Media Source is black or will not play: confirm the file works outside OBS, check its container and OBS source properties, and inspect the OBS log for decoding errors. Try the optional hardware-decoding setting only if your GPU supports the file type. If it still fails, conversion may be appropriate.
- The source plays, but YouTube rejects or fails to ingest the stream: check OBS’s outgoing encoder and the selected YouTube protocol. Input HEVC playback does not prove that the outgoing codec is supported for that stream configuration.
- Stream health reports problems or playback stutters: verify that the outgoing bitrate matches YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate; check the upload connection and test the stream before the event.
- HDR looks washed out or is not accepted: verify 10-bit output and the required BT.2020 primaries/matrix with PQ or HLG transfer, along with the encoder, protocol, and OBS version required by YouTube’s current HDR instructions.
- HLS has unexpected delay or configuration errors: allow for its higher latency than RTMP and check segment duration, playlist length, HTTPS request method, and byte-range behavior against YouTube’s HLS requirements.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a prerecorded program live on YouTube rather than operate an OBS session, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos and recovers automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The same flat price per slot covers any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
