Yes—but YouTube Live does not directly play an uploaded video file as a broadcast. To stream a prerecorded file continuously, a playback-and-encoding workflow must feed it into a YouTube live stream. For HDR, the outgoing live signal must use YouTube’s supported HEVC/H.265 10-bit configuration and matching HDR color metadata; a file being 10-bit alone is not enough.
What “playing an HDR file live” means
YouTube Live receives a live encoded stream from an encoder, not a file that YouTube itself loops as a broadcast. A continuous prerecorded stream therefore needs software or hardware that plays the file, sends its video through a live encoder, and keeps delivering the result to YouTube. The exact looping controls depend on that encoder; YouTube’s general guidance does not give a universal file-loop recipe.

HDR file upload and HDR live ingestion are separate workflows. YouTube’s upload guidance lists tested containers and recommended codecs for uploaded HDR files, but those upload options should not be treated as live-ingest options. For HDR live streaming, follow YouTube’s live-specific codec, color, and protocol requirements.
Requirements for a YouTube HDR live stream
Use HEVC/H.265 in 10-bit
YouTube Help says HDR streaming is supported with H.265 (HEVC); it does not list other codecs as supported for HDR live ingestion. Use an encoder capable of producing HEVC 10-bit output. YouTube’s OBS instructions specify a hardware HEVC encoder, the Main 10 profile, and P010 (4:2:0) color format. Available controls depend on the encoder, hardware, and software version.

Preserve the source’s HDR color characteristics
Check whether the source uses PQ or HLG, then configure the encoder to match it. YouTube specifies BT.2020 color primaries and either ST 2084 PQ or HLG transfer characteristics. A 10-bit output without compatible HDR metadata is not sufficient. YouTube recommends HLG in its OBS instructions, but the output transfer characteristics still need to match the source.
Choose a supported ingestion protocol
YouTube documents both RTMP(S) and HLS for HDR ingestion. Its encoder guidance recommends H.265 for HDR over RTMP(S) and points to HLS when an encoder does not support the relevant RTMP capabilities. HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than RTMP, as YouTube explains in its HLS setup guidance.

For HDR over HLS, YouTube specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption besides HTTPS. Use the appropriate HLS stream key and leave manual resolution disabled for HDR, as YouTube instructs. These protocol details generally need to be set by the encoder or streaming system rather than by the file itself.

- Inspect the source. Confirm that it is genuinely HDR and determine whether its transfer characteristic is PQ or HLG. Identify its resolution and frame rate so the encoder output can be chosen deliberately.
- Choose a file-playback and live-encoding workflow. It must be able to play the file as a source, loop it without stopping, encode HEVC Main 10 at 10-bit, and preserve the source’s HDR color metadata. YouTube’s requirements do not certify a particular third-party application’s looping behavior.
- Set the HDR encoder output. In YouTube’s documented OBS approach, use a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG as appropriate. Labels and availability differ by encoder and device.
- Set YouTube ingest. In Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and configure the encoder with the matching stream key and supported protocol. Select RTMP(S) if the encoder can send the required HDR signal that way; use HLS when needed for the encoder’s capabilities, accounting for its higher latency.
- Check general live output settings. YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Choose the bitrate row for the actual output resolution and frame rate in YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance; one bitrate is not appropriate for every stream.
- Start the encoder and verify the result. Confirm that the encoder is sending, the file loops as intended, and the stream remains active in Live Control Room. Do not use the Control Room preview’s colors as an HDR test: YouTube says that preview does not display HDR colors.
What viewers will see
YouTube delivers HDR automatically to supported playback devices. YouTube lists HDR TVs using the YouTube app, Chromecast Ultra connected to an HDR TV, Android devices with HDR displays, and computers with HDR graphics and displays when HDR is enabled in the operating system. Other devices receive SDR. On a compatible device, viewers can check the video quality menu for an HDR indicator.

HDR live streaming is not the same as uploading an HDR video
YouTube’s separate HDR upload guidance lists MOV, MP4, and MKV as tested containers and recommends upload codecs including VP9 Profile 2, AV1, and HEVC. It also requires correct transfer-function, color-primary, and matrix metadata. Those are upload recommendations, not a list of HDR live-ingest codecs. For live HDR, use HEVC/H.265 10-bit with compatible BT.2020 and PQ/HLG characteristics, sent through a supported live protocol.
Common problems and fixes
- The video is 10-bit but does not appear as HDR. Check the color primaries and transfer metadata as well as bit depth. Configure BT.2020 and the source’s actual PQ or HLG transfer characteristic.
- The encoder cannot select HEVC Main 10 or P010. The chosen encoder or hardware may not provide YouTube’s documented HDR output path. Use a compatible hardware HEVC encoder and confirm its supported profile and pixel format.
- RTMP(S) does not accept the intended HDR setup. Confirm the encoder supports YouTube’s HDR capabilities over RTMP(S). If not, consider HLS where supported; expect higher latency and configure the HLS requirements correctly.
- The Live Control Room preview looks like SDR. That preview does not show HDR colors. Check playback on an HDR-capable device and look for the HDR indicator in the quality menu.
- The stream starts but the file stops instead of looping. Looping is controlled by the file playback/encoder workflow, not by a universal YouTube setting. Enable repeat or playlist behavior in that product and verify it before relying on a continuous broadcast.
- Viewers see SDR. This may be expected on a device or display without HDR support. Check on a supported HDR device with operating-system HDR enabled where applicable.
