You can control a desktop app from your phone without the app having an API: connect to the computer with a remote desktop or phone-to-PC control client, then view its screen and send touch, keyboard, or mouse input. For occasional manual use, start with a remote-control client. Build a custom interface only if you need named buttons or repeatable actions that ordinary remote input cannot provide.
What a phone remote can—and cannot—do
A remote session gives your phone a way to interact with the computer that is already running the app. The app does not need to provide a phone interface or expose an API for you to tap its visible controls, type into fields, or use menus. The client handles screen viewing and forwards your input to the desktop session.

This is different from building an automation layer. A remote desktop is a view of the existing interface, operated manually; a purpose-specific remote might instead present buttons for actions or shortcuts. The latter depends on what the host operating system and target app actually permit. The available documentation establishes remote input options, not that an unspecified app can be automated reliably.
Choose the right kind of remote
Remote desktop client for manual control
This is the simplest starting point when you need to see the app and operate its normal interface. Microsoft’s Windows App supports connections to Windows remote PCs as well as managed environments such as Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Dev Box, and Remote Desktop Services; setup and account requirements depend on the environment. Phone-to-computer control utility
A phone-to-PC utility may offer focused controls for common tasks as well as mouse and keyboard input. Unified Remote advertises mouse, keyboard, media, screen, and app remotes for Android, iPhone, and iPad on its official site. Check the current host software and phone compatibility before choosing it; the product listing alone does not establish compatibility with every computer or app.
Remote desktop with mobile or browser access
Jump Desktop documents mobile touch controls and keyboard shortcuts, with clients for iPhone and iPad, Android Beta, and web browsers. Its Android support is identified as beta in the viewer documentation, so treat that status as provisional and verify it for the release you intend to use.

Custom remote interface for repeatable actions
Consider a custom interface when you want a small set of named buttons, repeatable shortcuts, or tightly scoped actions rather than a full desktop view. It is not a turnkey solution: the right implementation depends on the host OS, phone OS, target app, and whether the app exposes usable controls or permits automation. Those capabilities are not established for an unspecified app.

- Host and phone operating systems: Confirm that the chosen client supports both the computer and the phone, including the current release.
- Control scope: Decide whether you need the whole desktop, an assigned remote app, or only a purpose-built set of actions.
- Connection and account: Determine whether the service needs a user account, organization account, assigned resource, or specific connection details.
- Network access: Confirm the computer can be reached from the phone in the situation where you will use it. Do not assume that local-network access and access from elsewhere have identical requirements.
- Workflow fit: Identify whether the task depends on small controls, dialogs, precise pointer placement, shortcuts, punctuation, or non-Latin text.
For Windows App, Microsoft lists network connectivity and a user account for a remote PC. Managed services can also require an assigned resource and the relevant organization account or connection details. The connection guide specifies Android 10 or later for several service contexts; requirements vary, so check the live entry for the exact service and release rather than treating that version as a universal rule.
Set up the session and test the input
- Install a client supported by both devices. Select a remote desktop or phone-to-PC utility based on the computer and phone OS, then follow that provider’s connection instructions for your particular environment.
- Connect to the computer or assigned resource. Use the required account and connection details. For Windows App, distinguish a remote PC connection from managed resources such as Windows 365 or Azure Virtual Desktop; their prerequisites are not interchangeable.
- Open the target app in the remote session. Confirm that you can see its normal desktop interface before relying on it for a task.
- Try both touch styles if available. In Windows App, direct touch means a tap clicks at that screen location; pointer mode lets your finger steer a visible pointer. Direct touch can be convenient for large controls, while pointer mode may be easier when you need to position a cursor more deliberately.
- Test text and shortcuts on the actual workflow. Windows App supports scancode and Unicode keyboard modes. Scancode uses the remote session’s keyboard layout, so the physical key position and that layout determine the result. Unicode translates characters using the user locale, and an input method editor (IME) may be needed for some complex input. Check punctuation, shortcuts, and any non-Latin text you use before depending on the session.
- Try a physical keyboard or mouse if touch is insufficient. Microsoft documents an on-screen keyboard and touch gestures on Android in Windows App, as well as pairing a physical Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. A compact Bluetooth keyboard for phone use is an optional input category, not a requirement; confirm compatibility with the phone before buying one. See Microsoft’s input guide.
- Run the complete task once before relying on remote access. Test the app’s dialogs, controls, text entry, and any timing-sensitive steps from the phone. Keep a way to use the computer directly if the workflow proves difficult remotely.
Know when a custom remote is worth the effort
A standard remote client is usually the better fit when you need to inspect the app, respond to changing screens, or use controls you cannot predict in advance. A custom remote becomes more attractive when the same actions recur and a small set of buttons would be easier than navigating the desktop each time.

Before building one, verify that the target app and host OS provide a supported way to trigger the required actions. A phone interface cannot make an app’s controls automatable if no usable mechanism exists. Also decide what should happen when a command fails or the app is on an unexpected screen; repeatable actions need a recovery path, not just buttons.

Remote input is not proof that every app, dialog, protected screen, or precision task will work well. The cited product documentation describes available controls, not universal compatibility, performance, or a common security standard across products. Test the real task under the network conditions where you will use it, especially if accurate text, low delay, or exact pointer placement matters.

If a step is unreliable, use the computer directly for that step, change to a physical keyboard or mouse, or narrow the remote workflow to actions that work consistently. Avoid relying on unattended operation unless you have separately confirmed that the app, operating system, and connection setup support it.
