An autonomous system number (ASN) identifies the network associated with an IP address. Anti-bot systems may consider that network alongside request behavior, headers, browser or session signals, and fingerprints. To find the cause, compare what happens across networks and inspect the target site’s available challenge and security logs; changing headers alone is not a reliable diagnosis.
What an ASN tells a detection system
An ASN identifies the autonomous system associated with a source IP address: a network-level clue about where a connection comes from. It can help a site identify patterns across requests, but it does not establish that every request from that network is automated or abusive.

Detection can combine signals at different levels. Cloudflare’s scraping detections documentation, last updated August 24, 2026, describes dynamic analysis of zone request patterns by ASN and by JA4 fingerprint. Its broader bot-detection guidance also discusses request features such as headers and browser or session signals. A block therefore may reflect a combination of network, fingerprint, and behavior evidence rather than one header or one network identifier.
Why changing headers may not change the result
A plausible User-Agent string does not establish that a request came from the service it names. Cloudflare explains that fake-bot checks can compare a User-Agent with known patterns and verify its source using methods such as reverse DNS or IP validation. Its examples include legitimate cloud services and monitoring tools whose source ranges do not match the expected ranges for the claimed bot. In such cases, changing the User-Agent alone may not resolve the mismatch.

Headers still can matter: detection systems may evaluate them along with other request attributes. The practical distinction is that a header edit cannot rule out a network-reputation, source-verification, session, fingerprint, or behavior-based decision.
How to distinguish a network signal from a header issue
These comparisons are diagnostic questions, not guaranteed tests. Similar behavior across networks does not identify a rule by itself; the target site’s telemetry is what can show which decision path applied.

- Compare the same request behavior across networks. If requests with similar behavior and headers receive different outcomes on different networks, that is evidence worth investigating as a possible network-reputation factor. It does not prove ASN was the cause.
- Check whether one source network is consistently affected. If multiple requests from the same source IP or network receive the same challenge or block, look for a network-level pattern as well as request-level signals.
- Look for available challenge, bot-score, or fingerprint evidence. A site’s logs or response details may reveal whether a challenge or a particular rule applied. Cloudflare’s documentation shows that ASN and JA4 can be analyzed as distinct signals; a visible outcome alone may not expose which one mattered.
- Ask whether other users on the same provider are affected. A shared network pattern can point to an intermediary or provider-level issue, but it does not show that every affected user is a scraper.
Do not use network switching to evade a site’s controls. Follow the site’s access rules and use an authorized API or other approved route when available.

Identify the actual matched rule and source address
Start with the event or security log for the affected request. Confirm which rule produced the action and what source address or network the system evaluated. An ASN is a grouping signal, not a verdict on an individual request.

That distinction matters when traffic passes through a proxy or load balancer. The AWS WAF developer guide explains that an ASN derived from the source IP can represent the last proxy’s network rather than the originating client. Forwarded-IP headers are separate: AWS notes that they can be handled inconsistently or modified. Do not treat a client-supplied or proxy-forwarded IP value as interchangeable with network metadata derived from the connection peer.
Use a narrow exception for verified legitimate traffic
If logs establish that legitimate traffic is being blocked, prefer an exception limited to known request characteristics rather than broadly allowing an ASN or disabling protection. Cloudflare’s false-bot guidance, last updated May 5, 2026, recommends a narrowly scoped exception for a verified false positive, placed before the blocking managed ruleset. The exception should match the legitimate traffic you have identified, not make an entire network trusted by default.

Cloudflare documents custom rules using ip.src.asnum, including examples that combine ASN with bot score. Its documentation says ip.src.asnum is available on all plans; the illustrated bot-score field requires Bot Management, which the page lists as an Enterprise feature. Plan entitlements can change, so verify current availability in Cloudflare’s custom rules documentation. Cloudflare also cautions that skipping security rules can create risk: keep any skip or exception as limited as the verified use case allows.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Vendor documentation establishes that ASN can be one input to scraping detection and that header, source-verification, fingerprint, and behavior signals can also be relevant. It cannot identify the reason a particular site’s system blocked a particular request. That requires the site’s response details, logs, or rule configuration. Without those, treat ASN as a plausible factor to test—not a confirmed cause—and do not assume headers are irrelevant.
