Yes—download eligible shows or movies in the Netflix app before you leave. Once the download, setup, and login are complete, Netflix says you do not need an internet connection to play it. Inflight Wi-Fi is less dependable: whether Netflix streaming works depends on the airline, aircraft, route, and its internet restrictions.
How to watch Netflix on a plane without Wi-Fi
- While connected to the internet, update the Netflix app and sign in to your account.
- Choose a show or movie with a download option. Netflix does not make every title available for download.
- Download the title, preferably over Wi-Fi to avoid using mobile data. Before departure, open Downloads and start playback while you are still online to confirm the download and account setup are ready.
- Keep the download on the device you saved it to. Netflix downloads are available on that device, not as transferable files; any Netflix profile on the device can view them.
- On the plane, open the Netflix app’s Downloads section and play the saved title. Offline playback works after the initial download, setup, and login are complete.
Which devices support Netflix downloads?
Netflix lists Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad, Amazon Fire tablets, and Google Chromebooks with the Google Play Store as download-capable devices when they run the latest Netflix app. Older operating-system versions may not support downloads, so check app compatibility before travel. Netflix recommends downloading over Wi-Fi to save mobile data.

Downloads are tied to the device used to save them. They also require you to remain signed in, so confirm your account access before leaving home.
Download limits, expiry, and storage
Netflix’s stated download allowances vary by plan and device, and can change. Its help page says ad-free plans can have up to 100 active downloads at a time per device, subject to the number of devices included in the plan. Ad-supported plans are limited to 15 total downloads per device per calendar month. The number of devices allowed to hold downloads is also plan-dependent; review your current plan details before relying on a particular allowance.

Some titles expire after a period, but Netflix does not specify one universal expiry duration for all downloads in its cited instructions. Licensing restrictions can also impose annual download limits on particular films or series. If Netflix will not let you download a title again, its guidance is to stream it while connected or choose another title. Delete watched downloads to free device storage.
Netflix downloads, airline entertainment, and inflight Wi-Fi
These options are different, and only a saved Netflix download reliably avoids the need for an onboard connection.

| Option | Internet needed during playback? | What determines availability? |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix download | No, after initial download, setup, and login | The title must be downloadable, your device must be supported, and the download must remain available. |
| Airline entertainment | Often served through the airline’s onboard system; details vary | Airline, aircraft, route, and the airline’s entertainment catalog or equipment. |
| Netflix streaming over inflight Wi-Fi | Yes | Wi-Fi availability, bandwidth, route and aircraft, and whether the airline permits streaming apps. |
Airlines illustrate why streaming should not be assumed. Southwest says access to certain high-bandwidth applications may be prohibited and Wi-Fi is limited to designated Wi-Fi-equipped aircraft. Qantas says Netflix and other streaming platforms are available on select routes with inflight Wi-Fi. Singapore Airlines says its inflight Wi-Fi does not support Netflix and other listed streaming apps. Check the operating airline’s current information for your specific flight; a Wi-Fi purchase alone does not guarantee Netflix access.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAirline-provided entertainment can be a fallback, but it is not the Netflix catalog. American Airlines says personal-device access to its own movies and TV is available on most flights through its onboard Wi-Fi network, and may not be available until the aircraft reaches 10,000 feet. The airline also directs passengers to follow crew safety instructions and stow devices during takeoff and landing.

Does Netflix work in airplane mode?
Yes. Airplane mode is compatible with watching a title already downloaded to your device, because offline playback does not require an internet connection once setup is complete. If you want to use onboard Wi-Fi for an online service, follow the airline’s instructions. Those commonly involve enabling airplane mode first and then turning Wi-Fi back on to connect through the airline’s portal; this does not ensure Netflix streaming will be allowed.
