Whether that works for you depends on the services and channels you need, broadband availability at your address, your TV or streaming device, and the reliability of your home network. Germany is not abandoning television or cable overnight: satellite, cable and internet-based reception continue side by side.
What changes when television becomes a software service?
With cable, the familiar model is a connection to the building and a TV contract, often with a receiver or television tuner. Internet-delivered TV shifts some of that experience into software: you choose a service and package, sign in through an app, and watch on a supported television or connected device over your internet connection.

“IPTV” can mean television delivered through an internet protocol network, while “internet-based reception” is the category used in some household research. Streaming services that mainly offer on-demand films and series are not automatically the same thing as an internet-TV package with live channels. Before signing up, check what the specific service includes: channel line-up, live viewing, catch-up, restart, recording and any device limits.
The interface may change, but the television set remains important. In its 2025 II Platform Study, published in 2026, AGF Videoforschung found at least one internet-connected TV in 70.3% of surveyed TV households. That describes connected televisions, not households using IPTV as their main reception method. AGF also found that 44.7% of respondents used broadcasters’ online offerings.

How much is internet TV growing in Germany?
There is no single percentage that captures every form of internet-delivered television. Two recent surveys use different measures, so their figures should be read separately rather than combined into a trend line.

AGF calls its figure “internet-based reception,” while ASTRA reports IPTV as the household’s first reception method. Their samples, methods and category definitions differ. The results both indicate that internet reception is established, but they are not interchangeable measurements.
Satellite remained the largest first reception method in ASTRA’s survey. The wider shift is toward more ways to reach television: live channels, broadcaster apps and paid streaming can coexist in one home.

Did the cable billing change make households switch?
Germany’s so-called ancillary-cost privilege (Nebenkostenprivileg) ended on July 1, 2024. Landlords can no longer pass cable-TV fees through tenant ancillary charges as they previously could. The change affects who chooses and pays for cable; it did not prohibit cable television.
In AGF’s 2025 II findings, among households affected by the rule change, 74.4% reported concluding a new cable contract and 15.9% reported changing their reception method. Those figures describe affected households, not all German TV households. They show why “Germany is cutting the cable” is too broad: the change prompted some people to reconsider their setup, while many kept cable through a direct contract.
What do you need to watch live TV over the internet?
The basic requirements are a service that carries the channels and features you want, a compatible screen or playback device, and an internet connection that works well where you watch. Fibre is not a prerequisite for internet TV. Germany’s broadband networks include VDSL over copper, hybrid fibre-coax cable and fibre-to-the-home or building; availability differs by location. The Bundesnetzagentur reported mid-2025 fibre coverage of around 55% of homes passed and around 21% of homes connected. Those are fibre availability measures, not IPTV adoption figures.

Check the service and its channels
Compare the actual line-up and viewing features, not just the label “IPTV.” Verify that required public-service, local, sports or pay-TV channels are included in the package available to you. Check whether the plan supports the features you rely on, such as catch-up, restarting a programme or recording it. These are service-specific, not universal IPTV guarantees.

A separate stick or box is optional if your television has a supported app. As one example, Deutsche Telekom lists MagentaTV support on selected smart TVs and compatible devices including Fire TV, Apple TV and its own TV hardware. Compatibility depends on the precise TV model, operating system and app support, so confirm those details with the provider before subscribing.
Telekom says its MagentaTV app can run on compatible Fire TV devices even when the television itself is not a smart TV. That setup still requires a compatible Fire TV device, an HDMI television, Wi-Fi or internet access, and an active MagentaTV tariff. A stick is therefore a possible way to add app support—not a requirement for every household.

Check connection quality where you watch
Internet speed at the router is not the whole story. Wi-Fi coverage, the number of simultaneous streams and the video quality you want can affect playback. Telekom recommends at least 10 Mbit/s for stable HD viewing on MagentaTV and higher bandwidth for multiple streams or higher quality. That is guidance for Telekom’s service, not a general IPTV standard. Test the connection in the room where the TV will be used before deciding you need a new router or broadband plan.

Start with what is available at your address and what your household actually watches. Compare the full cost of reception and service, including a separate broadband bill where relevant; do not assume internet TV will always be cheaper. AGF’s findings on the billing change show that many affected households chose a new cable contract rather than switching reception method.
- Keep or choose cable if the available package suits your channel and viewing needs and the direct contract’s cost and terms work for you.
- Consider internet TV if a suitable service carries your essential live channels and features, your broadband connection is reliable, and your preferred screen or device is supported.
- Keep another reception route in the mix if satellite or terrestrial reception better fits your location, equipment or viewing needs. Availability and installation requirements vary by building and area.
- Check whether a hybrid setup makes sense if your household watches scheduled channels as well as broadcaster apps or on-demand services. Linear and non-linear viewing are not mutually exclusive.
Before cancelling cable, confirm which household members use it, whether the replacement includes their channels and features, what equipment they can operate, and when the new service is ready. That avoids confusing a change in delivery method with a change in the programmes or access the household expects.
Why more apps do not mean linear TV is disappearing
Broadcasters’ streaming services are reaching substantial audiences alongside established live viewing. ARD’s 2026 Media Study, published September 22, 2026, reported that 56% of respondents used ARD streaming offerings and 51% used ZDF offerings. The survey covered 2,462 German-speaking people aged 14 and over in Germany; fieldwork ran from January 27 to April 19, 2026. ARD described only slight annual change in the balance between linear and non-linear habits.
Paid video is also a large market, but industry revenue and subscriber estimates do not measure household reception methods. VAUNET estimated €5.5 billion in German paid-TV and paid-video-streaming revenues for 2025 and forecast €5.6 billion for 2026. Its estimates cover subscription revenues and exclude advertising; the association also reported 15.8 million pay-TV subscriptions and 25.9 million video-streaming subscribers in 2025. These are market estimates, not government statistics or a count of homes that have replaced cable with IPTV.
