Yes. You can watch custom channels added to Plex’s Live TV & DVR guide when away from home, provided Plex Remote Access is working, your account qualifies for remote video playback, and your server can transcode the stream. A channel working on your home network does not guarantee it will play remotely.
What you need for remote viewing
- Remote Access enabled: Plex Media Server must be reachable from outside your home network.
- Eligible accounts: Plex’s remote personal-video rules and, for ErsatzTV, its Plex integration requirement may require Plex Pass or another qualifying option.
- A server that can transcode: Plex says Live TV requires transcoding capability.
- A supported Plex client and a working channel source: The client must connect to the server, and the custom source must be available.
These requirements are separate: satisfying one does not resolve a failure in another.

How custom Plex channels differ from Plex’s free channels
Custom channels from your own server
Software such as ErsatzTV can create channels from a media library and present them to Plex as a Live TV/DVR source. ErsatzTV’s Plex setup guide describes adding the source to Plex and supplying its XMLTV guide URL. The guide says Plex Pass is required for this integration. Plex clients directly support ErsatzTV’s MPEG-TS mode, according to that guide.
Plex’s free streaming channels
Plex’s free ad-supported streaming service is a different service: it streams online and does not depend on your personal server or require special tuner hardware. It is not the same as custom channels built from your library and added to your server’s guide.

Check Plex’s remote playback account rules
Plex says its new remote personal-video playback requirements began on 2025-04-29 and apply as apps are updated. Under those rules, remote playback can qualify if the server administrator has Plex Pass, the viewer has Plex Pass, or the viewer has Remote Watch Pass. Because Plex describes the rollout as app-dependent, check the account and app combination you actually use in Plex’s remote playback requirements. ErsatzTV separately states that Plex Pass is required for its Plex integration; meeting Plex’s general remote-playback rule does not override that integration requirement.
Set up and test remote viewing
- Confirm the custom source works at home. In Plex, configure the source under Live TV & DVR. For ErsatzTV, use its network address if Plex does not discover it, then enter the XMLTV guide URL as specified in the ErsatzTV Plex guide. Check that the channel and guide appear on your home network. Plex’s DVR setup instructions explain the Live TV & DVR area.
- Enable Remote Access. In Plex Web, go to Settings > Server > Remote Access. Make sure the server is signed in to a Plex account, enable remote access, and confirm Plex reports it enabled. See Plex’s Remote Access setup guide.
- Resolve connection setup if needed. Plex often uses router UPnP or NAT-PMP for automatic configuration. If that fails, Plex’s guide describes manually forwarding an external port to port 32400 on the server. Follow its instructions for your router and network; do not assume that seeing a channel in the guide means the server is reachable remotely.
- Test from outside your home. Use a supported Plex app on a device connected to a different network, such as mobile data. Plex maintains a list of supported apps and platforms; app support and versions can change, so verify your client if it is missing features or cannot connect.
What to check if the channel will not play
- Remote Access status: Recheck the status in Settings > Server > Remote Access. If it is not enabled, troubleshoot the router or follow Plex’s manual port-forwarding directions.
- Account eligibility: Check the remote playback requirements for both the server administrator and viewer, and account for ErsatzTV’s stated Plex Pass requirement.
- Transcoding capacity: Plex says Live TV requires a server capable of transcoding. If the host is low-powered, it may not handle the stream adequately. Actual results depend on the server, channel stream, client, and network. See Plex’s Live TV guidance.
- Source and client: Check that the custom source is healthy and that the app supports the playback mode. A failure on one client does not by itself show that remote access is unavailable for all clients.
- Connection quality: The documentation cited here does not establish a universal upload-speed minimum for every custom channel. Test the actual connection and adjust playback quality if the client offers that option.
Do you need a tuner or antenna?
Not for software-generated channels such as an ErsatzTV source. A tuner and digital antenna are for receiving over-the-air broadcasts; Plex’s tuner documentation does not make them prerequisites for custom virtual channels. Do not buy OTA hardware solely to watch custom channels remotely.
