Can You Use Windows Explorer Alternatives on Linux? Common Questions Answered

Linux file managers can replace the everyday Windows Explorer role. Learn when to choose GNOME Files, Dolphin, or GNOME Commander for layouts, network storage, search, and advanced operations.

Yes. Linux desktops provide graphical file managers that cover the everyday Windows Explorer role: browsing folders, organizing files, searching, opening removable media, and reaching network storage. Start with the manager integrated into your desktop—GNOME Files (also called Nautilus) on GNOME or Dolphin on KDE Plasma. Choose GNOME Commander when a twin-panel layout and advanced file operations matter more than desktop integration.

These applications are functional equivalents, not guaranteed visual or behavioral clones of Windows Explorer. The best choice depends on your desktop environment, preferred navigation layout, remote-storage needs, and appetite for customization.

What “Windows Explorer alternative” means on Linux

Windows Explorer, now commonly called File Explorer, is the graphical application used to navigate folders, inspect files, connect to storage, and perform routine file operations. Linux supplies the same category of application, usually called a file manager. A file manager is part of the desktop experience rather than a single component shared by every Linux installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction explains why there is no one universal Linux replacement. GNOME and KDE Plasma ship different default applications, with different layouts and settings. Both handle the core job, but neither source establishes that any option is an exact Explorer clone, the fastest, or the lightest on memory. Treat “equivalent” as comparable purpose, not identical menus, icons, shortcuts, or behavior.

The three documented choices in this guide cover the most common needs:

  • GNOME Files (Nautilus): the integrated default for GNOME, with local, removable, and network-file access.
  • Dolphin: the integrated default for KDE Plasma, with tabs, split view, drag-and-drop between views, and configurable right-click actions.
  • GNOME Commander: a twin-panel manager aimed at people who want two folders visible together and more advanced file operations.

Which Linux file manager should you try first?

The practical first choice is the file manager supplied by your desktop environment. Integration reduces the number of separate conventions you need to learn and gives you the workflow that the desktop documentation describes as its default.

Application Desktop relationship Navigation layout Storage and network capabilities documented Advanced or configurable features
GNOME Files (Nautilus) GNOME’s default file manager Icon grid, icon list, and tree list views; path navigation; tabs Local files, removable media, and network files; GNOME Help covers file servers and network shares Previews, searching within or below the current folder, plugins, and scripts
Dolphin KDE Plasma’s default file manager Tabs and split view for working with multiple folders Network and removable-storage behavior follows the KDE desktop and its configured services Drag-and-drop between split views and configurable right-click actions
GNOME Commander Optional project, not identified as a desktop default Twin panels and tabs SSH, FTP, Windows shares, and WebDAV are listed by the project documentation Quick filtering, advanced name/content search, internal text/hex/image viewer, embedded terminal output, and metadata-based advanced renaming

If you use GNOME, test Files before installing or learning another manager. If you use Plasma, test Dolphin first. Select GNOME Commander when the two-panel model or its specialist tools directly solve a problem that the integrated manager does not.

GNOME Files: the integrated choice for GNOME

What it is suited to

GNOME identifies Files, also known as Nautilus, as the default file manager for GNOME. It is the natural starting point for ordinary desktop work: opening folders, moving between locations, handling removable media, and working with files on a network. Its feature set is intentionally centered on the file-manager role rather than on being a general viewer for every kind of content.

Choose a view that matches the task

Files documents three main ways to display a folder:

  • Icon grid: useful when visual recognition of documents, folders, or media is more important than reading a long list of names.
  • Icon list: a denser presentation for scanning names and associated details.
  • Tree list: useful when the hierarchy of folders is the thing you need to understand.

Switching views changes presentation, not the underlying files. A Windows switcher who expects a familiar folder tree can begin with the tree list, while someone who prefers a visual desktop can use the grid.

Navigate with paths, tabs, and search

GNOME Help documents path navigation, tabs, previews, and searching within or below the current folder. A typical workflow is to open a location, use its path to move directly to a known folder, open additional locations in tabs, and search from the folder that should define the search scope. Searching “within or below” the current folder matters: a search started high in the hierarchy can cover more descendants than one started deep inside a project folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tabs are useful when you need several locations available without opening several independent windows. Previews let you inspect supported content from the manager before committing to a separate application. The exact preview behavior depends on the file type and the desktop’s installed support, so do not assume every format will have a thumbnail or inline view.

Work with removable and network storage

Files manages removable media and network files, and GNOME Help explains browsing file servers and network shares. In practice, use the manager’s storage and network locations to reach the device or server, then treat the resulting location like any other folder for the operations that the connection permits.

Network access is not a promise that every protocol or server will appear automatically. The available locations depend on the desktop configuration and the services installed on the Linux system. If a server is absent, confirm that the required service is configured and that the location is being accessed through a supported method rather than assuming the file manager is malfunctioning.

Extend it when the default workflow is close but not sufficient

GNOME documents that Files can be extended with plugins and scripts. That makes it a sensible base for a user who likes the integrated interface but needs an additional action. Extensions are not a reason to assume that every Windows shell extension has a Linux equivalent; evaluate each plugin or script for the specific operation you require.

Dolphin: the integrated choice for KDE Plasma

Why Plasma users often begin here

KDE identifies Dolphin as Plasma’s default file manager. It is designed to remain focused on file management. The KDE handbook puts that scope plainly: “Dolphin focuses only on being a file manager whereas Konqueror, which was KDE’s default file manager in KDE 3 and can still be used for file management, is a universal viewer for many file types.”

That focused role makes Dolphin the sensible first test on Plasma. You get a manager that follows the desktop’s conventions while still offering layouts and actions that appeal to users coming from Explorer.

Use tabs for separate locations

Dolphin documents tabs for navigating multiple folders together. Tabs keep related locations in one application window, which is useful when collecting files from several places or checking a destination while keeping the source available. They are a different organizational choice from opening separate windows; choose the arrangement that keeps the locations you compare visible in your workflow.

Use split view for source-and-destination work

Dolphin’s split view places two folder views together. The documented drag-and-drop behavior between views makes the relationship explicit: one side can show a source while the other shows a destination. This is particularly useful for sorting, copying, or comparing two folder trees without constantly switching windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Split view is not the same as a permanently twin-panel manager. It is a layout you enable when needed, while GNOME Commander is built around two panels. If you only occasionally need side-by-side navigation, Dolphin’s split view may be enough; if every session starts with two panes, GNOME Commander is the more direct match.

Configure right-click actions

KDE documents configurable right-click actions in Dolphin. Context actions can make frequently repeated operations easier to reach, but customization should be tied to a concrete task: for example, an action you use often when handling a particular kind of file or location. The existence of configurable actions does not mean that any particular third-party action is included by default.

GNOME Commander: when two panels and advanced operations are the priority

A twin-panel model

GNOME Commander’s project documentation describes it as a twin-panel Linux file manager. Both panels are visible at once, so the source and destination can remain on screen during a file operation. This is the clearest documented answer to the question “Which Linux option has two panes?” Dolphin can show two views with split mode, but GNOME Commander is explicitly designed around twin panels.

Tabs, filtering, and deeper search

GNOME Commander adds tabs to the twin-panel approach, along with quick search and filtering. Its documentation also lists advanced search by name and content. These are separate capabilities: a quick filter narrows what you see while working in a panel, whereas an advanced search can look for matching names or text content according to the search criteria you set.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Content search can be more demanding than name filtering and depends on the file formats and permissions involved. Use it when the information you need is inside files rather than in their filenames, and confirm the scope before interpreting an empty result as proof that no match exists.

Remote connections

The project lists SSH, FTP, Windows-share, and WebDAV connections. That breadth is a reason to consider GNOME Commander when your work spans several remote-storage types. Support listed by the project is not a guarantee that every server will accept every operation: authentication, permissions, protocol configuration, and desktop networking still determine what you can actually do.

Built-in viewers and terminal output

GNOME Commander documents an internal text, hex, and image viewer, plus embedded terminal output. These tools reduce context switching for inspection and command-oriented work. They do not turn the application into a general-purpose editor or terminal emulator; use them for the viewing and output functions the project describes, and open a dedicated application when you need capabilities beyond those roles.

Advanced renaming

Its advanced rename tool can use file metadata. That is useful when a set of files needs a systematic naming operation based on information already attached to the files. Plan a naming rule before applying it and verify a small group first, because a metadata-driven rename can affect many items at once.

A practical way to switch from Windows Explorer

You do not need to reproduce every Windows convention before Linux becomes usable. Test the file-manager tasks that matter to you in a deliberate order.

  1. Identify the desktop. If the session is GNOME, open Files first. If it is KDE Plasma, open Dolphin first. This gives you the manager documented as the desktop’s default.
  2. Test your everyday locations. Browse a local folder, a removable device if you use one, and a network location if your work depends on it. Record which locations appear and which require additional desktop configuration.
  3. Choose a navigation layout. In Files, compare grid, list, and tree views. In Dolphin, try tabs and split view. If two panels are central to every task, try GNOME Commander’s twin-panel layout.
  4. Repeat a real file operation. Use a representative source and destination rather than an empty test folder. In Dolphin, verify drag-and-drop between split views; in a twin-panel workflow, check that both panels remain useful as you move through directories.
  5. Try your search habits. Files can search within or below the current folder. GNOME Commander offers quick filtering and advanced name/content search. Use the scope that matches the question you are asking.
  6. Check specialist needs. If you depend on remote protocols, embedded viewers, metadata-based renaming, scripts, or context actions, select the manager whose documented feature matches that requirement.
  7. Keep performance claims out of the decision. The available documentation does not provide comparable speed or memory benchmarks. Judge responsiveness on your own hardware instead of treating an unsupported ranking as fact.

Network locations and removable media: what to verify

All three choices should be evaluated against the storage you actually use, not a generic checklist. GNOME Files explicitly covers removable media and network files, and GNOME Help covers file servers and network shares. GNOME Commander lists four remote connection categories: SSH, FTP, Windows shares, and WebDAV. Dolphin’s documented strengths in the supplied material concern tabs, split view, and actions rather than a named protocol list.

When a location does not work, separate four questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Discovery: does the desktop show the device, server, or share at all?
  • Protocol: is the connection type one the application and current desktop configuration support?
  • Authentication: are the credentials and account permissions accepted?
  • Operation: can your account perform the particular read, write, move, or rename action?

This distinction prevents a failed copy from being misdiagnosed as a missing file-manager feature. Verify the application’s current configuration and the server’s permissions for the protocol you need.

Two panes, split view, and tabs are not interchangeable

These layouts solve related but different problems:

  • Tabs keep several locations in one window but show one tab’s contents at a time.
  • Split view shows two Dolphin locations together for side-by-side navigation and drag-and-drop.
  • Twin panels make two GNOME Commander locations the application’s central workspace.

Choose tabs when you want compact organization, split view when you need a temporary source-and-destination comparison, and twin panels when the two-location model is how you think about file work. GNOME Files’ tree view addresses hierarchy, not the same two-location problem.

Customization and advanced operations

The managers differ in where they put power. Files keeps the integrated GNOME experience and exposes plugins and scripts for extensions. Dolphin places customization in configurable right-click actions and combines that with split navigation. GNOME Commander concentrates specialist tools in the application itself: filtering, content search, remote connections, internal viewers, terminal output, and metadata-aware renaming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

More features are not automatically better. A user who only needs local folders may find the desktop default clearer than a twin-panel interface. Conversely, someone moving files between remote systems may save time by choosing the manager whose panels and connection types match that job. Decide which operation you perform repeatedly, then select the feature that removes that particular friction.

Is any of them the fastest or lightest?

No reliable ranking can be made from the documented material. The reviewed GNOME, KDE, and GNOME Commander pages describe roles and features but do not provide comparable speed tests, startup measurements, or memory figures. Avoid claims that one is definitively fastest or uses the least memory.

If responsiveness is important, test the same folder and the same operation on your own Linux installation. Keep the conditions consistent and treat the result as local experience, not a universal benchmark. File count, network latency, storage speed, previews, search scope, and extensions can all change how an operation feels.

Common problems and sensible next checks

“I cannot find the layout I used in Windows.”

First identify which layout you actually need. Files offers grid, list, and tree views; Dolphin offers tabs and split view; GNOME Commander uses twin panels. No option is documented as reproducing every Explorer arrangement exactly, so choose the closest documented model rather than searching for an identical interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The network share is missing.”

Confirm whether you are browsing a file server or network share through the desktop’s supported method. GNOME Help specifically covers those locations, while GNOME Commander lists several connection types. Check the current desktop configuration, protocol, credentials, and permissions before concluding that the manager cannot reach the server.

“I need two folders visible all the time.”

Use Dolphin’s split view if you want a side-by-side arrangement inside the Plasma default. Use GNOME Commander if a twin-panel design is the defining requirement of your workflow.

“Search does not find text inside a file.”

Distinguish filename search from content search. Files documents searching within or below the current folder, while GNOME Commander documents advanced search by name and content. Confirm that the search scope includes the folder you expect and that the file type is suitable for content inspection.

“I want Explorer-style extensions.”

Files supports plugins and scripts, and Dolphin supports configurable right-click actions. Those are documented extension points, not a guarantee that a particular Windows shell extension exists on Linux. Match the extension mechanism to the action you need and check its compatibility with your current desktop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line for Windows switchers

Linux absolutely supports the everyday file-manager role associated with Windows Explorer. Start with GNOME Files on GNOME or Dolphin on KDE Plasma, then move to GNOME Commander when twin panels, broader listed remote connections, embedded viewers, or advanced renaming are central to your work. The right choice is determined by desktop integration and workflow—not by an unsupported claim that one application is universally fastest or an exact Explorer clone.
