You can usually combine that with an object-cache plugin, browser-cache controls, and host or CDN caching, provided you know which layer serves each response and coordinate purges. Running two full-page cache plugins together is unsafe because they compete for the same WordPress cache drop-in, delivery rules, stored pages, and invalidation events.

What “several caching plugins” can mean
The phrase covers several different architectures. A WordPress site may cache complete HTML pages, database objects, PHP bytecode, browser assets, or responses at a host, reverse proxy, or CDN. These layers are not interchangeable. WordPress documentation distinguishes page caching from persistent object caching: “Persistent object cache and page cache are separate systems.” That separation is the key to deciding what can run together.

| Layer | What it stores | Can it coexist with one page-cache plugin? | Important condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-page cache | Generated HTML responses for visitors | Only one owner | Do not let two plugins control page-cache delivery or the same drop-in |
| Persistent object cache | Reusable database query results and WordPress objects | Yes | A supported Redis, Memcached, SQLite, or other backend must be available |
| Browser-cache helper | Cache-Control, Expires, and related browser headers | Usually | Keep one authoritative set of long-cache headers |
| Opcode cache | Compiled PHP bytecode on the server | Yes | It is a server runtime layer, not a second page cache |
| Host, reverse-proxy, or CDN cache | Responses held outside WordPress | Yes, with coordination | Determine whether it caches HTML and how WordPress purges reach it |
The practical rule is simple: one component owns each layer. Several layers may be present, but overlapping ownership is what creates conflicts.
Why two full-page cache plugins conflict
Full-page plugins intercept requests early and serve a previously generated HTML file or response instead of running WordPress for every visitor. In WordPress, that early mechanism commonly uses the advanced-cache.php drop-in. WP-Optimize documentation states that two page-cache plugins cannot be used together because both need that same drop-in. Prime Cache documentation likewise says, “Do not run two page caches at once.”

Even if both plugins appear active in the dashboard, only one can reliably control the early request path. The other may still write files, add rewrite rules, alter cookies, or schedule purge jobs. The resulting combination can produce several failure modes:
- Stale HTML: one plugin serves a page that the other plugin has already regenerated.
- Unpredictable purges: publishing a post may clear one cache while the other continues serving the old response.
- Rewrite conflicts: Apache or Nginx rules can point requests at different cache directories or bypass exclusions.
- Broken personalization: a cached response intended for one cookie state may be delivered to another visitor.
- Harder rollback: deactivating a plugin may leave its drop-in or server rules in place.
Installing two page-cache plugins does not create two independent performance boosts. It creates competing authorities for the same HTML request.

One page cache plus persistent object caching
This is the most common legitimate combination. The page-cache plugin stores complete responses for cacheable requests, while an object-cache plugin stores reusable results such as options and database query output. Redis Object Cache and Memcached Object Cache provide persistent object-cache backends, but the server must actually expose the corresponding Redis or Memcached service and the selected plugin must support that service. Installing an object-cache plugin without a reachable backend does not create persistent caching.
Only one component should own the object-cache drop-in as well. If two object-cache plugins both try to control it, choose one backend and one owner, then remove the other according to its instructions.
One page cache plus browser-cache or asset-header controls
Browser caching is a header policy, not a second copy of the server’s full-page cache. A browser-cache helper can coexist with page caching when it does not duplicate or contradict the page plugin’s rules. The Prevent Browser Caching documentation recommends leaving its long-cache option off when an existing cache plugin already supplies those headers. Otherwise, one plugin may tell browsers to retain assets for a long period while another expects immediate revalidation after an update.

One page cache plus a host, reverse proxy, or CDN cache
Varnish, a hosting provider’s server cache, a reverse proxy, or a CDN such as Cloudflare can sit in front of WordPress. This can be useful, but it adds another HTML cache that must be understood. Confirm whether the outer layer caches HTML, which URLs it excludes, and whether a WordPress purge reaches it. Cloudflare proxy caching is independent of WP-Optimize page caching; clearing the WordPress cache alone does not necessarily clear the CDN copy.
A host cache can also continue serving an old page after a plugin purge. Prime Cache documents this stale-page risk. If visitors still see old content after WordPress reports a successful purge, the outer cache is a primary suspect.
How to audit the caching stack before changing anything
Make an inventory before activating or removing plugins. The goal is to identify every place that can return HTML without running a fresh WordPress request.
- List active plugins. In WordPress, open Plugins → Installed Plugins. Record every plugin that mentions page cache, performance, browser cache, minification, CDN, Redis, Memcached, object cache, or optimization.
- Check the server and host. Ask the host whether Varnish, Nginx FastCGI cache, LiteSpeed cache, a reverse proxy, or another server-level cache is enabled. Note whether it caches anonymous HTML and how it is purged.
- Check the CDN. Identify whether the CDN is only delivering static files or also caching HTML. Record its bypass rules for cookies, query strings, logged-in users, carts, and checkout pages.
- Inspect cache indicators. Use your browser’s developer tools or an HTTP-header checker to look for cache-status, Age, Via, X-Cache, or vendor-specific headers. Compare a logged-out request with a logged-in request.
- Identify drop-ins. In Tools → Site Health → Info → WordPress Constants and the site’s drop-in list, look for
advanced-cache.phpand any object-cache drop-in. A file can remain after a plugin is deactivated. - Map purge paths. Write down what happens when you publish a post, update a menu, change a widget, or purge manually. Determine whether the action clears only WordPress, or also the host, proxy, and CDN.
Do not enable another optimization feature until this map is clear. A cache header from an outer layer can make an inner plugin’s status misleading.

How to switch from one page-cache plugin to another
Switching owners is safer than leaving both active while testing. Work during a low-traffic period if the site is transactional, and keep a backup of the current configuration.
- Document the current settings. Save exclusions, preload rules, compression settings, CDN credentials, and purge integrations. Note any custom server rules.
- Purge the existing page cache. Clear the plugin’s generated pages before deactivation. If a host or CDN caches HTML, purge those layers too.
- Deactivate the old page-cache plugin. Use Plugins → Installed Plugins. Follow that plugin’s cleanup procedure; some require removing a drop-in or restoring server rewrite rules after deactivation.
- Verify cleanup. Confirm that the old
advanced-cache.phpfile and old rewrite directives are removed or replaced as documented. Do not delete files blindly on a production site. - Activate and configure the replacement. Let it become the sole page-cache owner. Start with basic page caching, then add one optimization feature at a time.
- Recreate exclusions. Exclude logged-in users, personalized cookies, carts, checkout, account pages, APIs, and any other dynamic routes required by the site.
- Purge every layer again. Clear the new local cache and the outer host, reverse proxy, or CDN cache before testing.
- Test both visitor states. Check a fresh logged-out browser, an authenticated account, and a private or transactional workflow. Verify that new posts, edits, and comments appear after the expected purge.
Dynamic pages must bypass full-page caching
Full-page caching is safest for public, identical responses. A page that varies by user, cookie, cart, location, or request parameters needs an explicit bypass or a carefully designed variation rule. At minimum, review:
- Logged-in dashboards and profile pages
- Shopping carts, checkout, payment, and order-confirmation URLs
- Membership or subscription content
- Search and filter URLs with query strings
- Forms that display private submissions or one-time results
- REST, AJAX, webhook, and other API endpoints
After every cache change, test as both logged-in and logged-out users. A page that looks correct in an administrator session may be bypassing the cache entirely, while anonymous visitors receive a cached version.
How purge coordination works across layers
Purging is an invalidation chain, not a single button. A WordPress plugin can delete its own files while a reverse proxy still holds the previous response. Conversely, an outer layer can be purged while WordPress immediately regenerates a stale page from an inner cache.
Recommended Free Tools
For each layer, establish:
- Which events trigger a purge: post publication, edit, taxonomy change, menu update, or manual action
- Whether the purge is URL-specific, group-based, or a complete flush
- How long a stale response can remain while regeneration occurs
- Whether authenticated or cookie-bearing requests are bypassed
- How to confirm success from response headers and page content
When debugging, purge from the outside inward: CDN, reverse proxy or host, then WordPress page cache, then object cache only if the issue involves stored data rather than HTML. Record the timestamp and test with a cache-busting query string only as a diagnostic; do not treat that query string as a production fix.

Choosing and comparing page-cache plugins
Feature counts are less useful than ownership and operational fit. Use these comparison axes before selecting a replacement:
| Decision area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Cache ownership | Does the plugin install or control advanced-cache.php? Does it detect an existing drop-in and explain how to remove it? |
| Layer scope | Does it cache only HTML, or also object data, browser headers, assets, minification, and CDN content? |
| Purge integrations | Can it purge the host, reverse proxy, or CDN as well as its local files? |
| Dynamic-content controls | Can you exclude logged-in users, cookies, query strings, carts, checkout, APIs, and personalized URLs? |
| Server fit | Is the site running Apache, Nginx, LiteSpeed, Varnish, or another stack? Are Redis or Memcached services available? |
| Diagnostics and rollback | Are cache status indicators, headers, logs, and a clean deactivation process available? |
A plugin that fits the server and exposes reliable purge and exclusion controls is generally safer than one with a longer feature list but unclear ownership.
Common symptoms and targeted fixes
Edits appear only after a long delay
Check the host or CDN first. Purge each outer layer, then the WordPress page cache. Confirm that the publish or update event is connected to every required purge endpoint.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Visitors see another user’s content
Stop serving the affected route from the full-page cache. Review cookie and logged-in exclusions, then purge all layers. This symptom indicates a cache-variation or bypass failure, not merely a slow purge.
The site loops, returns errors, or ignores cache settings
Look for multiple page-cache drop-ins, duplicate rewrite rules, or incompatible server integrations. Deactivate the extra page-cache plugin, restore the documented server rules, and leave one owner active.
Best Value
Object-cache settings report no connection
Verify that the host provides the selected Redis or Memcached service, that the connection details are correct, and that the plugin supports the server’s version and transport. A page-cache plugin cannot substitute for a missing object-cache backend.
Static files remain stale after deployment
Inspect browser and CDN headers. If two plugins set long-lived headers, keep one authoritative policy and purge or version the affected assets. Browser retention can outlast a WordPress page purge.
Practical answers to common setups
Can WP Super Cache and W3 Total Cache run together?
No. They are both page-cache owners. Choose one, remove the other plugin’s drop-in and server rules according to its documentation, purge every outer cache, and then test the remaining configuration.
Can Redis object cache run with a page-cache plugin?
Yes, when Redis is actually available from the host and the object-cache plugin is compatible with it. The Redis layer stores persistent objects; the page-cache plugin stores complete HTML. Keep their drop-ins and settings distinct.
My host already has a cache. Do I still need a WordPress page-cache plugin?
Not automatically. First determine whether the host cache already serves anonymous HTML and provides exclusions and purge hooks. Adding a WordPress page cache may duplicate the same layer. A separate object cache or carefully configured browser policy can still be useful, but only after ownership is clear.
Bottom line for a stable WordPress cache stack
Use one full-page cache owner, then add only layers with distinct responsibilities: persistent objects, browser headers, opcode caching, or an outer host/CDN cache. Confirm the backend and server fit, exclude dynamic responses, and make every purge path observable. If you cannot explain which layer serves a request and how an edit invalidates it, the stack is not ready for another caching plugin.
