Sometimes. Samsung Pay, now integrated into Samsung Wallet, works at a gas station only when the specific pump or checkout terminal supports a payment method the wallet can use. Samsung warns that unsupported readers are commonly found at gas pumps, so check for contactless payment at the pump and keep another payment method available.
Why Samsung Pay may not work at the pump
Acceptance depends on the payment reader, not simply on whether a gas station accepts cards or mobile payments elsewhere. Samsung says Samsung Wallet will not work with readers that do not support NFC or MST, and notes that these readers are commonly found at gas pump stations. Its US product page describes Samsung Pay as part of Samsung Wallet and says it can be used where contactless payments are accepted.

That means a station’s register and its pumps can have different capabilities. A successful payment inside does not establish that the pump reader supports Samsung Wallet, or vice versa. Samsung’s guidance is based on US support and product pages checked October 7, 2026; availability and supported cards can differ by country, phone or watch model, card issuer, and software version.

- Look for a contactless payment symbol on the pump’s reader or screen.
- Ask the attendant whether that particular pump accepts mobile wallet payments.
- If the pump does not offer a compatible reader, ask whether the register inside has a contactless terminal. This is a fallback to try, not a guarantee.
How to pay with Samsung Wallet at a supported reader
- Open Samsung Wallet and select the payment card you want to use.
- Complete the requested security step, such as authentication on your device.
- Hold the back of your phone near the contactless reader, following any placement guidance shown on the terminal.
If the payment does not register, check that NFC is enabled, try the reader’s indicated contactless area, and remove a thick phone case if it may be interfering with the signal. These steps cannot make an incompatible pump reader accept a wallet payment.

What to do if the pump declines or does not respond
Try paying inside if the store has a suitable contactless terminal. If not, use a physical card or another payment method the station accepts. The station determines which terminals and payment methods are available; carrying a backup avoids relying on a pump that may not support mobile wallet payments.
What Samsung’s guidance does—and does not—establish
Samsung’s US support page, Fix Transaction Errors in Samsung Pay, says readers without NFC or MST support will not work with Samsung Wallet and are commonly found at gas pumps. Its in-store payment instructions explain selecting a card, completing the security step, and holding the phone to a contactless reader. Samsung’s Samsung Wallet product page presents Samsung Pay as integrated into the wallet and ties use to places that accept contactless payments.

Those statements do not provide a measured share of gas stations or pumps that accept Samsung Pay. Acceptance must be checked at the specific terminal you plan to use.
