Usually, no—not through a public download or standard license. Capcom’s RE ENGINE is a proprietary in-house tool, and its documented access for people outside the company has been limited to specific educational programs. If you want to build a game independently, a publicly documented engine such as Unreal Engine is a separate option; it does not give you access to RE ENGINE.
What RE ENGINE is—and who it is for
Capcom describes RE ENGINE as an in-house game-development engine used to create its titles and support multiple platforms. The company developed it around its own workflow, including rendering, editing, playtesting, and quality control. Its name stands for “Reach for the Moon,” and Capcom traces its development to work on Resident Evil 7 biohazard, released in 2017. Capcom’s 2025 Integrated Report also says the company is developing REX (RE neXt Engine) as a stepwise evolution of RE ENGINE, not as a complete replacement.

That makes RE ENGINE different from a general-purpose engine offered to independent developers. Capcom’s public materials describe company use and selected educational access, not a consumer product you can download and start using.
Has Capcom ever let people outside the company use it?
Yes, in limited, Capcom-run educational settings. Those examples demonstrate access for specific participants, not an open application route or general license.

Kindai University course in 2024
Capcom announced a practical course for eligible students in Kindai University’s Faculty of Informatics, planned for August 26 to September 6, 2024. The announcement listed 30 students and said the course would use AWS cloud services. Capcom called this the first time it would make RE ENGINE publicly available, referring to this course arrangement. The dated announcement does not establish a continuing public signup program. Read Capcom’s course announcement.
Capcom Games Competition for students in Japan
In a December 9, 2024 announcement, Capcom described a competition for students aged 18 or older enrolled at a university, graduate school, or vocational school in Japan. The planned development period was six months, with teams of up to 20 people working in a cloud environment and receiving support from Capcom developers. The stated application window was December 9, 2024 to January 17, 2025. That window has passed; the announcement does not describe a general RE ENGINE license or continuing access after the competition. Read Capcom’s competition announcement.

Can you download RE ENGINE or use it for an indie release?
Capcom’s cited public materials do not document a general download, a standard license for independent developers, or permission to publish an unrelated commercial game using RE ENGINE. The educational examples were limited to particular eligible groups and programs; they should not be treated as evidence of unrestricted access to the engine, its tools, or its assets.
So if you are an individual developer asking “Can I download RE ENGINE?” or “Can an indie developer use Capcom’s engine?”, the practical answer is that no public route is established by these announcements. Only Capcom can confirm whether it offers any other access arrangement.

Unreal Engine is one alternative with publicly available learning materials, samples, documentation, and licensing information on Epic’s game-development page. It is a separate engine, not a substitute license or gateway to RE ENGINE. The right choice depends on your project, workflow, and preferred tools; these sources do not establish one engine as best for every developer.
Epic’s licensing page, accessed October 3, 2026, says game developers can use Unreal Engine without charge before the stated $1 million gross product revenue threshold, after which royalties apply to games or applications that use engine code at runtime and are licensed to third-party end users. It also describes seat-based fees for certain other commercial uses above $1 million in annual gross revenue. License terms can change, so check Epic’s current terms before committing to a project or relying on those thresholds.

How to decide between an engine you can access and one you cannot
- Access and eligibility: Check whether you can actually obtain the engine under a current program. The cited RE ENGINE examples required participation in specific educational arrangements; Epic documents public Unreal Engine resources.
- Learning support: Compare the documentation, samples, and any instruction available to you. Capcom’s announcements describe support in particular programs, not an ongoing public training offer.
- Publishing and licensing: Confirm the applicable terms for the kind of game and release you plan. Do not assume that participation in an educational program grants rights to publish a separate commercial title.
- Project fit: Consider your intended platforms, workflow, and team needs. A famous engine used for particular games is not automatically the right or accessible tool for your own project.
