Yes—but a shared YouTube stream key alone does not create failover. Configure one encoder to send the stream to YouTube’s primary ingestion address and a second encoder to send a matching, simultaneous feed to the designated backup address. Then test that playback rolls over when the primary feed stops. Do not point both VPS servers at the same primary URL and assume YouTube will treat that as supported redundancy.
How YouTube stream-key failover works
A stream key is the credential or stream name your encoder uses to send a feed to YouTube; reusing a key in stream settings does not, by itself, provide a backup path. YouTube’s live-stream resource exposes separate primary and backup ingestion addresses and describes sending the primary content to the backup simultaneously. The two VPS encoders therefore need the same stream identity and the correct, distinct destinations for the protocol in use. YouTube’s stream-key guidance explains the key’s role, while its ingestion protocol documentation describes the ingestion addresses.

The backup is meant to receive a concurrent copy, not to sit idle until you manually change a URL after the primary has failed. A backup feed also does not guarantee a seamless switch or a fixed recovery time: the outcome depends on endpoint configuration, synchronized feeds, and the behavior of the encoders and network paths.
Configure two VPS encoders
- Get the actual YouTube endpoints. Open the live stream’s encoder settings or use the relevant YouTube API resource to obtain the primary and backup ingestion addresses for its protocol. Use those values rather than typing or guessing an endpoint.
- Set up VPS A as primary. Configure its encoder with the stream key or stream name and YouTube’s primary ingestion address.
- Set up VPS B as backup. Configure its encoder or dual-output system to send a simultaneous copy for the same stream to YouTube’s designated backup ingestion address. Ensure its content and encoder settings match the primary.
- Start both feeds and inspect the preview. Set up and check the encoders well before the event. Verify that the live preview is available and that your stream is accessible as intended.
- Simulate primary failure. Stop the encoder on VPS A or disconnect its network. Check the viewer-facing player to confirm that it rolls over to the backup feed. Restore the primary and repeat the test if your event plan depends on recovery in both directions.
- Monitor the event. Watch audio and video quality during the stream. Stop the encoders after YouTube ends the event.
YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance recommends setting up encoders in advance, checking the preview, and testing the primary-to-backup rollover. It does not promise a universal failover delay for every VPS, network, and encoder combination.

Use the right endpoint for your protocol
HLS
YouTube’s HLS instructions make the same-key arrangement explicit: the primary and backup URL templates use the same stream key, but have different hostnames and different copy values. The primary template uses a.upload.youtube.com with copy=0; the backup uses b.upload.youtube.com with copy=1. Follow the current template and its parameters exactly—the documented different copy value prevents corrupting the stream. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion instructions.
RTMP or RTMPS
YouTube’s API provides separate primary and backup ingestion-address fields for RTMP/RTMPS. Configure each feed with the address supplied for its role, using an encoder setup that supports simultaneous primary and backup output. Do not substitute two connections to the primary address for the documented primary-and-backup arrangement. The live-stream resource documentation lists the ingestion fields.

Keep the two feeds aligned
A backup that sends materially different video or audio settings may not behave as intended. YouTube identifies mismatches in frame rate, keyframe frequency, codec, interlacing, and profile among stream-health issues. Match those settings across both encoders, along with the content and timing, and check the preview before relying on the setup. The YouTube stream-health documentation describes these configuration checks.
Separate VPS instances can reduce reliance on one server, but their benefit depends on whether their network paths and other dependencies are also independent. YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a VPS provider, required distance between servers, or topology that guarantees failover. Treat redundancy as an arrangement to verify under your own conditions.

Common problems and fixes
- Both servers publish to the primary address: This is not the documented primary-and-backup setup. Retrieve YouTube’s designated backup address and configure VPS B to send its simultaneous feed there.
- The primary works but backup rollover does not: Confirm the backup encoder is running, is using the correct backup endpoint for the protocol, and is sending the same stream identity and a matching feed. Re-test by stopping the primary during a test window.
- HLS feed is unstable or corrupted: Check the HLS template’s host and
copyparameter. The documented primary and backup templates use different hosts andcopy=0andcopy=1, respectively; do not make the two URLs identical. - YouTube reports stream-health issues: Compare frame rate, keyframe frequency, codec, interlacing, profile, and other encoder settings between VPS instances. Correct mismatches, then preview and test again.
- Switching is delayed or not seamless: YouTube’s reviewed setup guidance does not guarantee a specific recovery time. Check the endpoint configuration and network behavior, and plan around what your own rollover test demonstrates rather than assuming a fixed delay.
