Apple’s documented Messages devices include iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro; its documentation does not list a Chromebook or an official iMessage web app. If you want to text from a Chromebook, Google Messages can do that when paired with an Android phone—but it is not iMessage.
Why iMessage doesn’t work natively on a Chromebook
iMessage is Apple’s messaging service within the Messages app on Apple devices. There is no Chromebook version identified in Apple’s documentation, and an Apple sign-in page or Chrome extension cannot turn a Chromebook into a supported iMessage device. Apple’s iMessage overview describes the supported devices and service.

Apple’s Text Message Forwarding feature does not bridge an iPhone to a Chromebook. It forwards SMS, MMS, or RCS messages from an iPhone to supported Apple devices, such as a Mac, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro—not to ChromeOS. See Apple’s Text Message Forwarding instructions.

If you have an iPhone and a Mac
You can use Messages on the Mac with the same Apple Account as your iPhone. Apple documents using the iPhone to send and receive forwarded SMS, MMS, and RCS messages on a Mac. This is an Apple-device setup, not a way to run iMessage on the Chromebook. Follow Apple’s iPhone Text Message Forwarding guide and its Messages setup guide for Mac.

Text from a Chromebook with an Android phone
For ordinary texting on a Chromebook, Google’s supported option is Google Messages paired with an Android phone. This does not provide iMessage; messages are sent through the phone’s connection, and carrier or operator charges may apply.
Pair Google Messages
- Make sure you have an Android phone with the current Google Messages app, internet access, and a Chromebook running ChromeOS 71 or later.
- On the Android phone, open Google Messages and choose Messages for web.
- On the Chromebook, open Messages and display its QR code.
- Use the phone to scan the Chromebook’s QR code and complete pairing.
Google’s Chromebook SMS setup guide explains the workflow and notes that messages use a connection from the Chromebook to the phone, so operator fees may apply.

What Phone Hub can—and can’t—do
Phone Hub is a separate Chromebook integration for Android phones. Depending on the phone, Chromebook, permissions, proximity, and network conditions, it can sync notifications and stream supported phone apps. Google’s documentation does not establish Phone Hub as an iPhone connection or an iMessage bridge.
Google lists Android 5.1 or later and Chromebook M89 or later as baseline requirements; app streaming has additional supported-device and network conditions. School- or work-managed Chromebooks may have features restricted. See Google’s Phone Hub requirements and setup.

Google Messages for web is not iMessage for web
Google Messages for web lets you use Google Messages in a browser after pairing it with Google Messages on an Android phone. It does not sign in to Apple Messages or access iMessage conversations. Google explains the pairing in its Messages for web help.

Avoid misleading iMessage workarounds
- Look for an Apple-supported Chromebook sign-in: Apple’s documented device list does not include ChromeOS.
- Install Google Messages expecting iMessage: It provides Google Messages, not Apple’s service.
- Assume Phone Hub connects an iPhone: Google describes Phone Hub for Android phones, not as an iMessage integration.
- Buy an accessory to add iMessage: The documented workflows depend on supported Apple or Android devices; an accessory is not an Apple-supported Chromebook iMessage solution.
