Usually, no. An 18V label alone does not make a battery interchangeable between tool brands. Compatibility depends on the battery platform and the exact tool, battery and charger—not just voltage. Use the battery and charger specified by the tool maker unless its documentation confirms that a particular shared system or adapter supports your exact models.
Why matching voltage is not enough
Voltage describes one electrical characteristic; it does not establish that a battery will physically fit, that its electronics communicate correctly with the tool and charger, or that the maker approves the combination. Check the platform name and the exact model numbers in the manufacturer’s compatibility information. Makita, for example, says batteries are compatible within their respective platforms, while Bosch Professional publishes its own platform and model caveats. What the major 18V systems actually support
Makita: compatibility is platform-specific
Makita U.S.A. distinguishes its CXT, LXT and XGT platforms and says batteries work within their respective platforms—for example, LXT batteries with LXT products. That is not permission to use Makita batteries in Milwaukee or DEWALT tools. Makita U.S.A. FAQ.

Makita Power Tools (HK) Limited stated on 2026-01-02 that “Makita genuine lithium-ion battery products are designed exclusively for use with Makita cordless power tools and their corresponding chargers.” The statement is from the Hong Kong subsidiary; its page says the English text is translated from Chinese and that the Chinese original prevails if there is a discrepancy. Milwaukee: M18 means within Milwaukee’s M18 system
Milwaukee says all M18 batteries are compatible with M18 tools and chargers. It also describes REDLINK communications among the battery, tool and charger for protection against overcharging and overheating. This is an M18-system compatibility claim, not a cross-brand standard. Milwaukee battery and charger FAQ.
Bosch Professional and AMPShare: a defined professional alliance
Bosch Professional says its 18V batteries have been compatible with Bosch 18V tools since 2018, but notes that GML 20/50 and GKS 18V-LI tools made before 2018 may not be compatible with ProCORE batteries. Check the specific tool and battery rather than relying on the platform label alone. Bosch Professional compatibility page.

AMPShare is a separate, defined multi-brand 18V system. Bosch says it covers Bosch 18V tools and 18V products that are part of the AMPShare alliance. Bosch DIY’s POWER FOR ALL system covers Bosch green 18V products and tools from named alliance members, including Gardena, Bosch Home Appliances, Husqvarna, GLORIA, Wagner, Rapid, Steinel, Kübler Workwear and PerfectPro. Bosch says compatibility dates to 2007 and describes the ecosystem as spanning 100 tools from 10 brands; those figures are claims on Bosch’s page, not an independent audit. POWER FOR ALL is a DIY/home system, distinct from Bosch Professional and AMPShare. Do not assume a Bosch Professional battery or tool belongs to both. Bosch DIY POWER FOR ALL.

Can an adapter make one brand’s battery work in another brand’s tool?
Do not treat adapters as universal translators. Compatibility can be limited to a specific battery family and tool list, and a pack that physically fits may still be nonfunctional or not approved for that combination. The reviewed official sources do not establish that generic third-party cross-brand adapters are safe or reliably compatible across tool and battery models.
DEWALT’s DCA1820 is a same-brand example
The DEWALT DCA1820 adapts specified DEWALT 20V MAX batteries for most DEWALT 18V tools. It does not make Makita, Milwaukee or other brands’ batteries compatible. DEWALT’s support list distinguishes tools where the adapter does not fit, fits but does not work, or works. It also warns against using certain premium battery packs with the DC970 and DC759 compact drills. Check both exact model numbers against the current list before using or buying the adapter. How to check a specific battery and tool
- Find the platform and model numbers. Read the labels on the battery and tool; do not rely only on “18V” or a brand name.
- Check the maker’s compatibility documentation. Look for the precise battery and tool combination, including model-year, battery-generation and charger restrictions.
- For an alliance product, verify membership. Confirm that the exact tool is listed in AMPShare or POWER FOR ALL, as applicable; the two Bosch systems are not interchangeable by assumption.
- For an adapter, follow its exact compatibility list. Verify whether your tool is listed as working, nonfunctional or physically incompatible, and check any battery-type warnings.
- Use the specified charger and follow the maker’s safety guidance. Do not infer charger compatibility from a battery that appears to fit. If official documentation does not confirm the combination, use the specified battery and charger instead.
What this means if you own Makita, Milwaukee or DEWALT tools
A Makita 18V battery should not be presumed to work in a Milwaukee M18 or DEWALT 18V/20V MAX tool. Their voltage labels do not establish cross-brand compatibility, and the cited official guidance does not authorize that pairing. Likewise, a DEWALT DCA1820 supports specified DEWALT battery-to-DEWALT tool combinations; it is not a Makita-to-DEWALT or Milwaukee-to-DEWALT adapter.
