Can You Use an Xbox One Controller on Xbox Series X/S?

Yes. Xbox One controllers can be used with Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox specifically names Xbox One controllers with Bluetooth support in its official statement about controller features on the newer consoles. That wording does not establish that every Xbox One controller revision has the same Bluetooth capabilities.

What Xbox confirms about compatibility

Xbox’s current Xbox Wireless Controller product page lists Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S as compatible platforms for that controller. Separately, an Xbox Wire announcement dated September 8, 2021 names “Xbox One controllers with Bluetooth support” among the controllers receiving Dynamic Latency Input (DLI), which delivers controller inputs more efficiently to Xbox Series X|S consoles.

The distinction matters if you are checking an older controller: the DLI announcement explicitly limits its statement to Xbox One controllers with Bluetooth support. It is not a model-by-model guide to every Xbox One revision or a promise that every controller offers the same features.

Should you keep your Xbox One controller?

If your existing controller works and meets your needs, the compatibility information gives no reason by itself to replace it. Consider a replacement or an additional controller only if yours is damaged, you want another for multiplayer, or you need features your particular controller does not provide. The cited Xbox pages do not establish a performance comparison across all Xbox One controller revisions and the current controller.

Bluetooth and console connection are not the same question

Microsoft’s current controller page describes Xbox Wireless for console connectivity and Bluetooth support for compatible PCs and mobile devices. The older-controller DLI statement is specifically about Xbox One controllers with Bluetooth support. These references should not be taken to mean that every Xbox One controller revision supports Bluetooth in the same way, or that Bluetooth is required for using a controller with an Xbox console.

Pairing and setup

The official material cited here confirms compatibility but does not provide a complete, revision-specific pairing walkthrough. Consult current Xbox support instructions for the exact controller revision rather than relying on a button sequence that may not apply to your model.

Do you need a rechargeable battery or charging stand?

No accessory is identified as a compatibility requirement. Xbox lists its Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C as an accessory option. A charging stand is optional as well: Xbox Wire’s September 27, 2022 article about the Razer Universal Quick Charging Stand for Xbox – Mineral Camo says it is compatible with Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S controllers. That article’s $49.99 USD MSRP and retail availability are historical details, not confirmation of current price or stock.

What to know about the current Xbox Wireless Controller

Microsoft’s product page lists the current Xbox Wireless Controller for Xbox One and Series X|S. It also states up to 40 hours of battery life with AA batteries, varying with use and accessories. That battery estimate is not evidence about cross-generation compatibility and does not describe older Xbox One controller revisions.
