Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteYes—but “using an old phone as Android Auto” can mean two different things. The phone can run Android Auto and connect to a compatible car display, or a third-party app can make the phone itself act as an Android Auto receiver. Those setups have different requirements, and neither is a universal makeover for any old handset or car.
First decide what role the old phone will play
In standard Android Auto, the phone is the source: it runs Android Auto and connects to a compatible vehicle display or aftermarket stereo. The car or stereo remains the screen.

In a phone-as-receiver setup, the old phone is the screen. A third-party project such as Headunit Revived says it can turn an Android phone or tablet into an Android Auto receiver. That is a separate arrangement from Google’s standard phone-to-car connection, and its compatibility and limitations depend on the actual devices and software versions.

A third option is simply to mount an old phone and use its own navigation or media apps. That can provide a separate screen, but it is not Android Auto projection or an Android Auto receiver.

Check compatibility before connecting anything
For standard Android Auto projection
Google’s current requirements list Android 9 or later for most wired connections, and Android 11 or later for wireless connections and select newer vehicles. Android Auto is integrated into phones; Android 10 and newer do not need a separate Android Auto app download. The car or stereo must also support Android Auto. Check the exact vehicle or stereo against Google’s compatibility information and the vehicle maker’s instructions before buying a cable or relying on the setup.
For a phone acting as the receiver
Headunit Revived is a third-party option, not a Google-supported substitute for a compatible car display. Its documented wired approach connects the host Android phone to the receiver device over USB. Its Wireless Helper workflow requires both devices to be on the same network and uses a companion helper service to start the connection. The project notes wireless drops and Android-version-specific limitations; its documentation does not establish that every old phone will work reliably.

Connect an old phone to a compatible car display
Wired connection
- Confirm that the phone’s Android version and the car or stereo model meet the compatibility requirements.
- Park the car, turn on the infotainment system, and make sure the phone has mobile data coverage.
- Connect the vehicle’s USB port to the phone with a high-quality compatible USB cable.
- Follow the prompts on the phone and vehicle display. Android Auto may ask for an update.
Wireless connection
- Confirm that both the phone and the vehicle support wireless Android Auto, and that the phone meets Google’s Android version requirement.
- For the first connection, pair the phone and car over Bluetooth. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on while setting it up.
- Make sure the phone has mobile data coverage, then follow the prompts from the vehicle.
- If Android Auto does not start automatically, launch it from the car’s display.
Google advises: “Make sure your car is in park (P) with the infotainment system turned on, and allow time to set up Android Auto before you start your drive.” Complete setup while parked.

What a phone-as-receiver setup involves
Follow the current instructions in the Headunit Revived project for the specific wired or Wireless Helper workflow you intend to use. The wired path connects the host phone and receiver over USB; the wireless path depends on both devices sharing a network and on the companion helper service. Do not assume a USB cable, Android version, or network arrangement that works for one device pair will work for another.

Test the exact phone pair, Android versions, connection method, and intended apps while parked. The project’s reported wireless drops and version-specific limitations mean a successful initial connection is not proof that the setup will remain dependable on every drive. The available documentation does not establish a universal compatibility list or comparative reliability result.
Choose the setup that fits the job
| Setup | Old phone’s role | Compatibility and connection | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard wired Android Auto | Runs Android Auto as the source phone | Compatible car or stereo; Google lists Android 9 or later for most wired connections; vehicle USB port and high-quality compatible cable | Uses the car’s display and follows Google’s standard setup prompts. |
| Standard wireless Android Auto | Runs Android Auto as the source phone | Compatible phone and vehicle; Google lists Android 11 or later; first connection uses Bluetooth pairing | Uses the car’s display without a wired phone connection after setup; mobile data coverage is needed. |
| Headunit Revived receiver | Acts as the receiver/display | Third-party project; documented wired USB and Wireless Helper methods; exact device and software compatibility must be checked | Project notes report wireless drops and Android-version-specific limitations; reliability for a particular device pair is not established. |
| Phone running its own apps | Acts as a separate phone display | Does not by itself require Android Auto support in the car; a secure mount may be appropriate | Navigation or media runs on the phone itself; this is not Android Auto projection or receiver mode. |
Know what Android Auto does—and does not—show
Android Auto is designed for a driver-optimized experience on a compatible car or stereo display, not as a general-purpose mirror of every phone app. App availability is limited by supported categories and the platform’s driver-safety rules. A receiver setup does not make unsupported apps available through Android Auto.
