Apple says an installation progress bar can move slowly or appear still, so that alone does not mean the update has failed.
Downloading and installing are different
During the download, Apple says you can continue using your iPhone; it will notify you when the update is ready to install. If you want the download to finish faster, avoid downloading other content at the same time. See Apple’s update troubleshooting guidance.

Installation is the stage to leave alone. For a wireless update, keep the iPhone connected to a power source and allow the process to complete. Apple does not give a universal installation time: duration can depend on the update size, available storage, and the files and operation involved.
What to do before updating
- Back up your iPhone. Apple recommends making a backup before updating.
- Check the basics. The iPhone needs a network connection and enough available storage. If prompted, Apple says the device may temporarily remove apps to make room.
- Confirm the update is available for your device. Compatibility and rollout availability can vary. Check the Software Update screen on your own iPhone rather than assuming iOS 27 is offered to every model or in every region.
Apple’s iPhone user guide describes automatic updates overnight while the iPhone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi, with notification before installation. For a manual check, open Settings > General > Software Update. Apple’s regional iOS 27 download instructions also describe checking compatibility and choosing manual or automatic updates; the update offered on your device is the practical check for current availability.

If the progress bar looks stuck
A slow-moving or apparently static bar can be normal. Apple advises letting the process complete; the time varies with the operation and files involved. Keep the iPhone connected to power rather than interrupting installation just because the display has not changed recently. Apple explains this in its guidance on the Apple logo and progress bar after an update or restore.
If the phone becomes unresponsive or the update does not complete, use Apple’s troubleshooting steps for the symptom instead of guessing at a wait time or trying an improvised recovery. Apple lists possible causes including an incompatible device, insufficient storage, a slow download, trouble reaching the update server, or an incomplete update.
