Sometimes—but only if the manual for your exact electric screwdriver permits drilling and the tool accepts the drill bit you plan to use. Some models support compatible hex-shank bits, while others are designed only for driving screws. Check the model’s bit type, size limits and settings before drilling; if it does not explicitly support the job, use a suitable drill/driver.
What determines whether an electric screwdriver can drill?
There is no universal answer because electric screwdrivers differ in their bit holders and operating settings. The DEWALT DW920K-2 manual describes drilling with a compatible bit, and the Ryobi HP54L manual also includes drilling instructions. These examples show that some models can drill, not that every electric screwdriver can.

Look up the manual for the model number on your tool. If it does not permit drilling or does not identify a compatible bit, do not assume that a bit that physically fits is suitable.

Read the manual’s requirements for both the bit’s shank and its size. For example, the DEWALT DW920K-2 manual says its quick-release chuck accepts only 1/4-inch hex accessories. The Ryobi HP54L manual specifies 1/4-inch hex-shank drill bits and a maximum bit size of 1/4 inch. Those limits apply to those models only.

A hex-only collet may not accept a standard round-shank twist bit. Use only the shank type and bit size specified for your tool; do not force an incompatible bit into the holder.
Set the tool for drilling
If the screwdriver has a drilling setting or speed selection, follow its manual. On the DEWALT DW920K-2, the manual instructs users to align the collar with the drill symbol to lock the clutch for drilling; otherwise, the clutch may slip. The Ryobi HP54L manual calls for high speed for drilling and low speed for screw driving. These are model-specific instructions, so use your own tool’s settings rather than copying them automatically.

Drill with control
- Switch off or lock the tool before changing bits. Follow the manual’s bit-changing procedure. The DEWALT screwdriver manual warns against tightening an accessory by holding the chuck and switching on the tool.
- Seat the compatible bit securely. Check that it is fully engaged in the collet or chuck before starting.
- Secure the workpiece. Clamp or anchor it, and use a backing block when appropriate for thin material.
- Keep the tool aligned. Apply pressure straight along the bit and use enough force to let it cut without forcing the motor to stall. Hold the screwdriver firmly to control its twisting action.
- Stop if the tool stalls. Release the trigger and identify the cause before trying again; repeatedly triggering a stalled tool is not a fix.
The DEWALT DW927 drill/driver manual advises: “Always apply pressure in a straight line with the bit.” A DEWALT DCF610S2 screwdriver manual warns: “The screwdriver may stall if overloaded causing a sudden twist.” These cautions reinforce why straight alignment, a secured workpiece and a controlled grip matter.
Know when a drill/driver is the better tool
Use a suitable drill/driver if your screwdriver’s manual does not allow drilling, the required bit will not fit, or the job calls for more capacity than the screwdriver specifies. A drill/driver may offer a drilling mode and selectable speed or torque ranges, but its suitability still depends on the particular tool, bit and material.

For context, the DEWALT DW927 manual recommends twist, spade, auger or hole-saw bits for wood; high-speed-steel twist bits or hole saws for metal; and carbide-tipped bits for masonry. Those are recommendations in a drill/driver manual, not evidence that an electric screwdriver can handle those bits or materials. There is no universal hole-size or material limit established for electric screwdrivers; check the manual for your model and use a drill/driver rated for the task when its limits are unclear.
